Burger King Staff QUIT En Masse
Leaving this parting shot on the sign
Currently, there is a national shortage of service workers as people have chosen either to leave the industry or don’t feel safe returning to crowded indoor spaces amid the Covid-19 pandemic. In June, the sector was down 2.2 million jobs as people are hesitant to return a job with such low pay and often no employer provided healthcare provision.

Good, corporations have suppressed wage for long enough, it's about time workers received a good minimum wage and better rights!

It's interesting that the times of being easily replaced at a minimal wage job (or any job for that matter?) has come to an end.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 13, 2021 9:30 PM

I don’t blame them! Those are shitty jobs and I doubt the employees are treated well. When the sky was falling last year everyone still wanted their fast food. They should be paid fairly.

The manager who started the exodus must actually be a good manager since her employees followed her out. They could have easily blamed her for the problems.

The only thing worse than a corporate owned fast food joint is a franchised fast food joint. Those fuckers are the absolute worst to work for, up to and including wage theft on a regular basis, not to mention the sexual harassment. The parent company turns a blind eye to it all and pretends it doesn't exist. This includes McD's, Wendy's, Burking King, Hardee's, etc.

What are all these "missing" employees living on?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 13, 2021 9:38 PM

Can't blame 'em. Between the Covid risk and putting up with abusive customers, service jobs must be a nightmare. Burger joint jobs used to be for high school kids getting their first job.

The same thing is happening in the UK, add on the effects of brexit taking away the cheap labour that's been keeping the wage suppressed for almost 2 decades and it's a great time for workers.

At the Burger King I go to, there’s three employees suffering from obvious mental retardation. Key guys, who I’ve seen work the same shift together. The manager understandably seems frustrated dealing with them because they don’t follow instruction very well and are easily sidetracked. I found it odd because usually in businesses with shift work, you might see one or two in different intervals to fulfill some sort of handicap quota.
Now I’m starting to think it’s because they can’t get anyone else to work there.

Working in those places has effectively been slavery, the only reason they're paid is so companies can say they aren't unpaid slaves, but for what they've been getting paid they may as well be working unpaid. Now Amazon and other companies are building "worker villages", society really has been regressing and hopefully covid has changed that.

Here in Norway even fast food eployees get a living wage. They have the same employment rights as everyone else, including 5 weeks paid vacation. Then again, fast food here is very expensive. Must be at least 3 or 4 times the American prices. But I think it's worth it. The workers deserve a living wage, as does everyone else working.

Many "rich" people got their start in the fast food business.
Lots of high school kids get money for college by working in fast food.
And there are those who need money for food and a home, who find income from working in a fast food restaurant.
Those of you who have never been there, will never understand.

Completely untrue. You're just lying at this point. Increasing fast food wages to $15/hour would increase a $7.00 meal to $7.31. Add in health insurance and we're talking maybe $1 to $2 more per meal per person to cover the cost.

That's totally unnecessary, R58.
Just close the dining room and make the establishment "drive-thru only."
This was the case during most of the pandemic, so if the workers are still concerned about COVID, then just close the restaurant and keep the Drive-Thru open.
People dealt with it for most of last year, so just keep doing it.
Certainly, that's better than closing the whole place down. Right?

There is no connection between labor costs and prices in today’s corporate world.
Wages are set at the lowest they can get away paying people, and prices are set at the best profit point.
Any pseudo connection is just lies told by corporate pigs who are trying their best to suppress wages, not because it will increase prices, but because it will decrease profits.
Prices will only increase if it will increase profits. They will lower prices if it sells enough more product to increase profits.
I’m not talking Mom & Pop places, mind you. They have different economics. Just corporate chains.
