Why Didn't Joey Lauren Adams Outlast the 90s?
If you love iconic 90s classics, you will know Joey Lauren Adams. She played Simone Kerr in the cult film Dazed and Confused, which never goes out of style. (We would cue the "Alright, alright, alright" jokes, but for once, we are not talking about Matthew McConaughey!)
But Adams gave us so much more than that film. She starred as Gwen in the 1995 flick Mallrats, then as Alyssa Jones in the 1997 film Chasing Amy. Just when you think we're at peak 90s classics, don't forget that she played Layla Maloney in the 1999 hit Big Daddy, per IMDb.
Big Daddy also starred Adam Sandler and interestingly, both Dylan and Cole Sprouse play the character Julian in the film, according to Insider. While the film scored a measly 39% by critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes, it still remains a beloved classic. (For the record, audiences gave it 74%, so clearly there's some disparity in opinion.)
While Adams served non-stop hits in the 90s, she took a step away from the spotlight in recent years. So what happened to her?

What has Big Daddy got to to do with peak 1990s classics?

Wasn't she assaulted by some actor or producer and that caused her to take a step back?

She had a small role in the Toni Collette Programme ("The United States of Tara").

"Chasing Amy" remains a significant, largely misunderstood gem of New Queer Cinema.
Discuss.

The only reason she had a career is because Kevin Smith wanted to fuck her. Then the only reason she sustained that career was because Vince Vaughn WAS fucking her.
That being said, she's a lovely person. I had to escort her and Vaughn to a play and then take them backstage and both were incredibly nice. They were running late, were very sweet and apologetic, polite, and nice to everyone.

R1 she has the same raspy voice as fellow three-named actor Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

She's my next door neighbor. When she first moved in, I didn't know who she was and all I could hear was her annoying voice when she was hanging out outside. I've actually hung out with her a few times before I knew who she was and found her very sweet. Someone told me who she was and I had to laugh. As far as I know, she's still acting but I'm not sure in what. Her husband is a really nice guy too who directs music videos. Both are huge smokers of both weed and cigarettes.

Yeah, she had smoker's skin on Tara.

We had a Renee Zellweger and she is a better actress who connected with Harvey Weinstein instead of a Kevin Smith.

Anything associated with Kevin Smith is tainted.

She was on the rarely-seen Starz show “Party Down”, playing a sleazy producer’s (played by JK Simmons) wife. She was good in it!
But that was probably ten years ago.

Why DID Kevin Smith outlast the 1990s?

Wow. The Harvey Keitel story circa 2:50...

She’s so pretty, and seems so chilled it and normal for an actress. Totally my type.

She does seem very likeable.
Wow, Keitel is a major dick. Stories abound about what a dick he is.

She is, r17. But straight. Her husband is cute too. I'm the one she lives next door to.

You're happy to tell her that you hate her voice? She'll probably shit on your lawn.

She's fine in comedies and she's conventionally attractive. Her voice doesn't bother me. It's just a raspy babydoll voice that Jennifer Tilly also has. JLA just didn't make the right connections or even slept with the right people that would have gotten her meatier roles. Working with Kevin Smith didn't help either.

It looks like she had a meatier role in that Keitel movie but she wasn't up to the task.

Yes, she seems really sweet and fun in R16, but R12 is right... Renee Zellweger happened.
I sure wish someone back then made a wacky rom-com or caper where Renee, Joey and Ellen Pompeo all rotated the same role or played sparring sisters or long-lost triplets.

She directed a good little movie called Come Early Morning with Ashley Judd.

l like her but I have a thing for baby-voice actresses like her and Melanie Griffith.
Wow, that Harvey Keitel story is actually quite cruel. I mean, I don't disagree with his stance but to say that in front of everyone was so unprofessional and rude.

Renee Zellweger was also in Dazed and Confused as an extra. Funny how careers take off or stall.
Joey Lauren Adams was a cute blonde who had her moment in the sun and then the moment was over. Happens all the time in Hollywood. At least she's still working on low-key projects and seems to have a happy life.
