Dawson's 50 Load Weekend (2005) was such a beautiful, moving film. Why the hate for it?

I never understood the hate this film got when it came out. Me and my sisters went to see it and loved it. Was it perfect? No. But what movie is these days? It was lovely. I liked the changes made from Dawson's own life as a drugged-out cum-dump to the movie, personally, and found the film moving. I got teary eyed more than once while watching it.

The lighting is beautiful, the score lovely, the loads thick and creamy… I just don’t get it.

"Le Weekend de Dawson Avec Cinquante Depots de Sperme."

Un film de Max Sohl.

by Anonymousreply 1July 10, 2021 8:31 PM

I came away fearing tunnels after that film.

by Anonymousreply 2July 10, 2021 8:48 PM

Dawson set the standard for cumwhores that followed him. Thank you, gay porn.

by Anonymousreply 3July 10, 2021 8:57 PM

The Wrigleyville CumDump owes his life to this film.

by Anonymousreply 4July 10, 2021 8:58 PM

0/10

by Anonymousreply 5July 10, 2021 9:02 PM

Wow OP. I was so close to making a thread about this myself. What a beautiful coincidence of two whorish minds! Anyways, my thread was going to be asking about how popular and impactful it really was when it was released.

by Anonymousreply 6July 10, 2021 9:25 PM

I'll never understand why Dawson's Oscar nomination was for supporting actor. He dominated every scene he was in.

by Anonymousreply 7July 10, 2021 9:27 PM

[quote]He dominated every scene he was in.

I wouldn't exactly say he "dominated" but he was receptive.

by Anonymousreply 8July 10, 2021 9:32 PM

Was Brenton Thwaites in this movie?

by Anonymousreply 9July 10, 2021 9:33 PM

All the horrid ugly aids-faces really made the movie. I still have night terrors to this day.

by Anonymousreply 10July 10, 2021 9:35 PM

"He took... and took... until there was nothing more to take."

by Anonymousreply 11July 10, 2021 9:35 PM

At least he said his lines and hit his marks without chewing on the scenery - that's more than I can say for Miss Davis.

by Anonymousreply 12July 10, 2021 9:40 PM

La Creme de la Creme

by Anonymousreply 13July 10, 2021 9:41 PM

It was a remarkable naturalistic performance--all those years of training at Stella Adler really paid off. He was able to convey so much inner complexity only by moaning, expressing everything from "I am high as a fucking kite right now" to "God, this hurts!" to "NOW! NOW!" to "When's the next one?", and all without the benefit of words. It was the performance of a lifetime--and such a step up from "Dawson's 20-Load Weekend" (far the inferior film). It would be hard to imagine Laurence, Lord Olivier or even Dame Peggy Ashcroft improving on that.

by Anonymousreply 14July 10, 2021 10:25 PM

What a shame, I was all set to sign on, but Gary talked me out of it.

by Anonymousreply 15July 10, 2021 10:31 PM

I loved all of the spit-takes and bloopers in the credits. You have to wait until the end. It's worth it. Most of the people in the theater I went to had already left - they missed the best part!

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2021 10:34 PM

If Dawson took 50 loads a weekend now, it would be all over Twitter and OnlyFans.

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2021 10:36 PM

The post credits stinger set up quite a twist for the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 18July 10, 2021 10:59 PM

Damn you guys! Some of us haven't seen it, yet. Please post SPOILER ALERT in the title. This is all very rude. Some of us didn't want the end ruined.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2021 11:07 PM

Don't tell R19 about the 50th load.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2021 11:08 PM

Did anyone see the 3D version? It was like the cum was squirting on your face! It made my mom jump!

by Anonymousreply 21July 11, 2021 10:24 PM

One of the few cases where the sequel surpassed the original. Like “Return of the Jedi “ or “Godfather II”.

by Anonymousreply 22July 11, 2021 10:48 PM

I thought the Dawson Weekend Happy Meal toy was a bit inappropriate though.

Did any of you have ALL FIFTY of the trading cards? I only got 28 of them. Some of the others are really rare.

by Anonymousreply 23July 11, 2021 11:00 PM

Can't wait for the spin-off TV-series: "Dawson's Crack".

by Anonymousreply 24July 11, 2021 11:10 PM

Dawshon'sh 50 loadsh! That'sh the mosht shemen I ever shaw!

by Anonymousreply 25July 11, 2021 11:15 PM

Such a clumsy title. Shouldn’t it have been called

“Dawson’s Crack”

by Anonymousreply 26July 11, 2021 11:25 PM

Oh shit I just saw r24

by Anonymousreply 27July 11, 2021 11:25 PM

I heard they're doing a reboot - but #37 is being difficult saying he was underpaid even though he was really the center of the film.

Apparently Dawson wasn't as nice to his co-stars as he said.

by Anonymousreply 28July 11, 2021 11:27 PM

Only on DL thread of Dawson’s 50 load weekend you can find the mention of Dame Peggy Ashcroft.

by Anonymousreply 29July 12, 2021 12:04 AM

Little known fact - Dawson spent a month with Helen Lawson prior to filming to research the role.

by Anonymousreply 30July 12, 2021 12:04 AM

Because back then bareback porn was stigmatized. But now it has become the standard, lol.

by Anonymousreply 31July 12, 2021 12:07 AM

Buddy Epson was originally cast as Dawson, but had to drop out due to a severe latex allergy.

by Anonymousreply 32July 12, 2021 12:26 AM

When the loads run out, I see the inspiration for Dawson's Creek

by Anonymousreply 33July 12, 2021 12:59 AM

Little known fact 2:

Dawson's real name is Derek. But he changed his name to Dawson to honour Helen LAWSON who took all the loads Broadway had to offer.

by Anonymousreply 34July 12, 2021 2:14 AM

"Two thumbs up" takes on a whole new meaning with this picture ...

by Anonymousreply 35July 12, 2021 2:36 AM

Are they ever going to turn it into a musical?

by Anonymousreply 36July 12, 2021 2:37 AM

Everyone talks about how versatile Streep is -- she'd never have been able to pull of this role.

by Anonymousreply 37July 12, 2021 2:37 AM

I laughed!

I cried!

It was better than CATS!

by Anonymousreply 38July 12, 2021 2:38 AM

She could have been one of the masked participants, R37.

by Anonymousreply 39July 12, 2021 2:39 AM

Too many of the "donors" were lured from the blood bank door down the street from the shelter.

[quote]OP: thick and creamy.

Sure. If you like amber clots with flecks of blood in it.

by Anonymousreply 40July 12, 2021 2:44 AM

[quote] Anyways, my thread was going to be asking about how popular and impactful it really was when it was released.

Perhaps you could start a thread informing people that the word is "anyway" and not "anyways".

by Anonymousreply 41July 12, 2021 2:50 AM

R41 How dare u

by Anonymousreply 42July 12, 2021 2:52 AM

Thank you, fat nellie unfuckable prisspot at R41

When did Dawson die from STD's?

by Anonymousreply 44July 12, 2021 3:32 AM

[quote] When did Dawson die from STD's?

What does the STD possess?

by Anonymousreply 45July 12, 2021 3:34 AM

50 Loads of Laundry ? My Goodness that boy needs some good colored help !!!!!

by Anonymousreply 46July 12, 2021 4:07 AM

The movie was OK but the book was better.

by Anonymousreply 47July 12, 2021 4:24 AM

I can hardly wait for the Almodovar remake.

by Anonymousreply 48July 12, 2021 5:04 PM

The Criterion edition is the best.

by Anonymousreply 49July 12, 2021 5:09 PM

Overrated schlock. The gratuitous gay sex in that film was obvious gay baiting and judging by this thread, it worked. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 50July 12, 2021 10:52 PM

Not enough diversity though. It would be canceled today

by Anonymousreply 51July 12, 2021 11:07 PM

Were there any Afro-Latinx in the cast? Because if not, they better get on that.

by Anonymousreply 52July 12, 2021 11:21 PM

This shows the typical white male cis able bodied bias of DL.

I know of least 50 trans wimmins of color who take 50 loads in a single afternoon, not spread out over a weekend. Remember who REALLY started the LGBTQAZPAHIVBB movement!

by Anonymousreply 53December 9, 2021 2:43 PM

I swear I remember a debate in the Times about whether it was appropriate to count the bukake loads, but I can’t find the link. Did anyone save it?

by Anonymousreply 54December 9, 2021 3:05 PM

I don't wish to carp, but the titles of Dawson's films have tended to be spoilers. His 2004 feature, Cumsloppy Buttholes, gives away the entire plot!

by Anonymousreply 55December 9, 2021 3:07 PM

I can see a new venture here with two possible plots;

Dawson's Titanic Adventure

1. Dawson takes as many loads as possible from the first sighting of the iceberg to the ship sinking

2. Dawson has an iceberg sized amount of frozen cum placed in his butt which melts while he pleasures various seamen. And their semen.

Who do I write to about getting these into production?

by Anonymousreply 56December 9, 2021 3:14 PM

R40 True devotees of Le Cinema Vérité find the casting seminal.

by Anonymousreply 57December 9, 2021 3:14 PM

[quote]I got teary eyed more than once while watching it.

Ya got any of those Kleenex you might be willing to part with?

by Anonymousreply 58December 9, 2021 3:15 PM

It's incredible to think that someone managed to take a photo at the Folsom Street Fair two decades ago of the then dewy young Dawson and his first meeting with Jesse O'Toole. Such is the stuff of legends...

by Anonymousreply 59December 9, 2021 3:16 PM

Though he has bottomed and/or been fisted by virtually everyone working in gay porn during those impactful years, Dawson still radiates a youthful sweetness and innocence - even after a bareback orgy.

by Anonymousreply 60December 9, 2021 3:25 PM

Spielberg’s next remake?

by Anonymousreply 61December 9, 2021 4:29 PM

the prequel: Dawson's Commute

by Anonymousreply 62December 9, 2021 5:42 PM

When will Dawson's oeuvre receive its due and be recognized by AFI and the Library of Congress?

by Anonymousreply 63December 9, 2021 10:43 PM

Please refresh my memory. Did Dawson cum in the end?

by Anonymousreply 64December 9, 2021 10:49 PM

He invented a new Unit: A Bakers’ Dawson.

by Anonymousreply 65December 9, 2021 11:19 PM

Legend has it that James Cameron was a fan.

He named Rose Dawson after Dawson's rose...

by Anonymousreply 66December 10, 2021 1:34 PM

A David Cronenberg video would have been less of a body-horror film.

by Anonymousreply 67December 10, 2021 2:25 PM

I understand he used a stunt double for much if it. The real Dawson took only two loads.

by Anonymousreply 68December 10, 2021 2:43 PM

r68=Peter North

by Anonymousreply 69December 10, 2021 3:11 PM

James Cameron would've done this in 3-D IMAX.

by Anonymousreply 70December 10, 2021 3:20 PM

It was almost as good as Shaving Ryan's Privates.

by Anonymousreply 71December 10, 2021 3:21 PM

That’s a lie, 68. They had to stop at 50 because the memory cards were full.

by Anonymousreply 72December 11, 2021 9:28 AM

I think the problem is that it was released during a highly competitive year Oscar wise. Certainly a poignant and layered film. So full of metaphor.

by Anonymousreply 73December 11, 2021 9:36 AM

I agree. It was a subtle and elegant performance . He didn’t chew the scenes. Imagine if Nathan Lane had gotten the part.

by Anonymousreply 74December 11, 2021 9:42 AM

The Hans Zimmer score was a bit distracting. In some parts of the film you couldn't even hear the dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 75December 11, 2021 9:43 AM

OP - I was not moved by this film.

And despite your link, Dawson was not a "boy" and certainly not "cultured".

by Anonymousreply 76December 11, 2021 9:44 AM

The CGI leather was a bit much.

by Anonymousreply 77December 11, 2021 10:02 AM

It was the first film to receive the coveted Palm D'Whore at Cannes. I heard there was a seven minute standing o-face after the credits, a record at the time.

by Anonymousreply 78December 11, 2021 10:24 AM

I do wish Cecil B. DeMille had gone ahead with the silent version with Ramon Novarro. Imagine the Wurlitzer organ!

by Anonymousreply 79December 12, 2021 3:45 PM

Dawson is the spunkmeister! ALL HAIL THE SPUNKMEISTER!!!

by Anonymousreply 80December 12, 2021 3:56 PM

Was there an intermission? With a Miklós Rózsa score?

by Anonymousreply 81December 13, 2021 2:01 AM

Yes, R81. Most folks went to the lobby (or mezzanine) bar and had a cocktail and then returned to the theater for the jaw-dropping “second act.”

by Anonymousreply 82December 13, 2021 3:41 AM

[quote] Most folks went to the lobby (or mezzanine) bar and had a cocktail

The big question was whose cock had whose tail during that intermission.
