Why were the ALIENS VS PREDATOR Films Rated PG-13?
All of the ALIEN films and PREDATOR films were rated R. Why were the AVP movies reduced to PG-13?
Was this because of W and post-9/11?
No cussing, no excessive violence or gore... NOTHING.
I seem to remember something about R being the kiss of death after 9/11 for some reason. Later in the 2000s, there was a big deal about "R is BACK!" celebrating the return of movies a bit more adult-oriented.

Because they’re more like teen action flicks, and wanted to cater to younger audiences

The one in 2007, yes, but the 2004 movie is full of 40 year olds, no teens in sight.
Was 2004's AVP the first time the Weyland corporation was brought into the continuity?

After Columbine, there was a huge crackdown and theaters became very aggressive about enforcing the R rating (no one under 17 admitted without parent or guardian). Lasted a few years. There was a perception inside Hollywood that an R rating would drastically reduce the box office, so if pre-release testing showed that the demographic most likely to be excited by AVP was teenagers (Since adults probably just saw it as a cash grab), they'd edit the film to be PG-13. Strictly financial.
I spoke to someone involved with NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE which was a very funny R rated spoof. She claimed it would have done double the business if it were PG-13 and (it's been a while) I think she said lots of other movies got a bump from teenagers buying for a different theater and sneaking in (this was before assigned seating).
During the early 00's there was a LOT of sensitivity inside Hollywood regarding ratings and it affected what they purchased, what was produced, and often, R rated films were chopped down to PG-13 in the same way they would be cut down to 90 minutes when the studio thought they sucked anyway.

Because they destroyed the Alien franchise to make a quick buck—and PG-13 equals more money.

Jurassic Park is certified 12 and the t rex scenes are straight out of a horror movie. They used a vast model instead of CGI and it's pretty terrifying.

AVP Requiem was so dark. I had trouble seeing what was going on. I hate when movies have crap lighting like that.

The SCARY MOVIE franchise dumbed-down from R to PR-13.

AVP is why James Cameron bailed on any future sequels with him.

I love the 2004 AVP but hate the 2007 one with the annoying teens.
2004 has the gorgeous Raoul Bova!

Cameron did only 1 film in the series 1986 R12. AVP didn't even come along until 2004. He's hardly a huge loss to the franchise and he had no intention of ever doing another Alien film anyway.

This was the era when 🍺 beer commercials during the Super Bowl would say, “Please don’t drink at all! Just watch the commercial with the cute and heart-warming animals. Just say No!”

I don't think Requiem was and it still ended up being shit. I don't think I ever need to see a Predator impregnate a woman through the mouth ever again 🤢
The first AvP wasn't too bad and still had some gore.

[quote]After Columbine, there was a huge crackdown and theaters became very aggressive about enforcing the R rating
Columbine was five years before AVP. There was never any change in enforcement — theaters have always assigned an usher before the theaters and kids have always been able to sneak into different theaters behind his or her back, in addition to letting their friends in through the Exit doors. They checked bags for a month after that Joker copycat shot up THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, but that's about it.
[quote]There was a perception inside Hollywood that an R rating would drastically reduce the box office
There is a matter of fact inside Hollywood for the last 35 years that PG-13 movies make a ton of more money than R-rated features. That's because there doesn't have to be parental accompaniment, children and teenagers are the biggest demographic and parents object to PG-13 less. This was no secret in 2004 and the situation has NOT changed.
r3 doesn't know completely what he's talking about.
And NO, a movie doesn't have to contain teen actors to appeal to a teen audience.
AVP was PG-13 simply to earn more money than a Rated-R feature can. It was produced for a new generation that wasn't as familiar with either franchise featured. The ALIEN franchise had really blown its cachet for nearly 20 years prior.

ALIEN: RESURRECTION was absolutely Rated R, liar.

The first AVP is actually a serviceable adventure movie. At least its story holds together, as ludicrous as the premise was.

James Cameron is a huge loss to ANY franchise, r14. Everything he does turns to gold.
And you can never say never in any franchise, either. Cameron just returned to the TERMINATOR franchise to good results and Ridley Scott has run ALIEN into the ground. They could use Cameron.

R22 Terminator should have ended after 3. And Avatar is overrated. I say this as a fan of Cameron.

r19 You're discussing a period of time when I lived in Los Angeles and was working in development at an active production company.
You are incorrect that movie theaters did not change their admission practices after columbine. The selling of tickets to R rated movies always had varied enforcement and it was specifically enforced for many years following Columbine. The theaters didn't guard the actual screening rooms they just required ID for tickets at that point. They'd only post ushers at the doors to check tickets for sold out screenings.

Sure, Jan.
That did not happen at the vast majority of theaters across the U.S. and I require proof that it happened anywhere. Outside, independent links with receipts.
