Former Winter Olympian Chad Hedrick posts about Gwen Berry - "Absolute disgrace"
[quote] One of the biggest honors and proudest moments of my life was wearing the red, white, and blue against the rest of the world. Walking into opening ceremonies, stepping to the starting line, and being awarded with a gold medal as the best in the world. I was given every opportunity to be my best due to support of the US Olympic Committee, sponsors, having the best equipments, access to therapists daily, and of course the best coaches in the world. This photo here is an absolute disgrace. Gwen Berry- this country is the reason you are the athlete you are. #olympics #teamusa #proudtobeanamerican #sports #freedom #opportunity #respect
Reaction has been mixed. Reminder that Hedrick got into a racially-tinged conflict with fellow speedskater Shani Davis at the 2006 Torino games.
[quote] Hedrick caused controversy when he insisted that Shani Davis, fellow American speed skater in the 1,000 m race, should have participated in the men's pursuit, stating, "I don't see what his logic is. We can't be beat if he skates. It's his decision. I'm not going to get in the middle of it. I would like him to be in the pursuit, but am I going to beg him? No."[2] Five-time gold medalist and Olympic-team physician, Eric Heiden, has publicly written that Davis made the right choice in not participating in the team pursuit and thereby not jeopardizing his chances at a gold medal in his best event, the 1,000 meter race.[citation needed] Davis eventually won the gold medal in the 1000 m race, while Hedrick finished sixth.
Hedrick is now a real estate agent and Christian compensated speaker outside Houston.

The whole point of the Olympics is for the athletes to represent the United States on the world stage, not embarrass their country.
I hope Berry doesn't get chosen for the Olympics team.
Activism has its place, but the Olympics are not for "calling out" your nation over its failings.

For the athletes, the whole point of the Olympics is to get there and compete, and hopefully win. If they don't make their country's team, most of them are willing to compete for another country, if they are able to do so and qualify for that country's team.
It has nothing to do with patriotism, it has everything to do with winning.
Take the politics out of the Olympics, stop branding the athletes by country of representation. Just let them compete as individuals - and let them drum up the sponsorships and funding the same way.

If she is so disgusted by the U.S., then she should pay back all of the money the U.S. sports organizations paid for her training. Talk about not recognizing your own privilege.

The US gov't does not fund the US Olympic programs or individual athletes. It's all run on private funding. So enough with the stupid poutrage.
Besides, protesting one's government is about the most quintessentially American thing one can do. As is acting like a jackass in public. Let her have her tantrum - by this time next year no one will remember who she is.

The Olympics is one of the few things that represents pride in country and universal patriotism. Either way, she's probably fucked herself out of endorsements. She's no Michael Phelps, that's for sure.
