I'm a big MSNBC fan. However, Joshua Johnson and Alicia Menedez on the weekend are the only two anchors who have totally turned me off. They are big snooze fests, lackluster and unappealing, and I can no longer watch them. When they're on, I now switch to Jim Acosta, the new midday anchor on CNN.

Morgan "Chesty" Chesky is an MSNBC roving reporter covering daily national disasters and thus often dressed in layers of protective and waterproof clothing. I LOVED watching him this morning in his fitted dress shirt, 3 buttons opened, tits barely contained. And those dimples....!

On Joy's show right now: Nikole Hannah-Jones suffered a massive indignity and insult by having her tenure bid stalled by UNC and she was right to choose Howard instead. Is there any reason, however, for Ta-Nehesi Coates to call this this incident an act of theft akin to that of using slaves to build a public institution? That's crazy. She ultimately turned the position down and she was right to do so. But that isn't theft akin to slavery.
Hannah-Jones was also on talking about choosing Notre Dame as an undergrad institution over a historically Black school and what a miserable experience it was. I don't doubt it. I would have hated going there myself. It's not known as a liberal school and the University of Michigan or Chicago could have provided an equally prestigious education minus at least some of the frat boy racism. She made a bad choice. She should have transferred. If it was a matter of a scholarship covering tuition, another school would have matched it.
I value these people's work but not their hyperbole. Good luck to both at Howard. Joy's hair is back to being ridiculous again--first, with bad straight wigs and now with awful coiled braids in shades of brown and blonde. Get a mirror.

While I would love to see Nicolle Wallace back in the studio with guests at the table, she is a single mother with a child that can't get vaccinated. Which would mean she would need to bring someone in, or multiple someones to watch her child while she was in studio. Can you even demand to know whether someone is vaccinated for employment?
I understand why she is still in the basement.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | July 8, 2021 1:56 PM |
I think that the pandemic showed that there is actually zero reason for anyone to be in a studio. They should all just be remote with green screens behind them. There is no value in being in the same physical space.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | July 8, 2021 2:48 PM |
Except that MSNBC seems unable to maintain good connections with remote locations, so the sound is often garbled and/or the pictures frozen, etc. Why this should be so difficult after more than a year is a mystery to me, and apparently also beyond the capabilities of MSNBC.

I’m sure he’s a brilliant man and a compelling professor at Princeton at times, but all he contributes to Deadline White House are the same canned sound bytes over and over again. “Soul of America” / “black folk” / “legacy of opression” -he will say two out of three every single time he appears on the show. Bingo card it if you don’t believe me. He needs to pull down some of those very good books that are always featured behind him and try to find some new phrases. I see a lot of Toni Morrison on his bookshelf. Crack one of those open and crib something from her, an incredible (and non-repetitive) African-American icon.

I know it may seem silly because he's clearly a person on the liberal side of the aisle but every time I see Eddie Glaude, Jr., I just have a hard time forgetting when he said back in 2016, when asked about Hillary vs. Donald, that there was basically no difference between them and that he could "never" bring himself to vote for Hillary Clinton. Now, of course, he fashions himself as part of "The Resistance" but all I can think is, "Yeah, but had it not been for people like you who refused to open your fucking eyes and see it was a race between the imperfect (Hillary) and downright evil (Trump), there might not be anything to resist, but whatever."

When she was on "The View", people on message boards always commented on her "cackle" because she laughed too loudly and too often and at such inappropriate times. It usually seems like nervous laughter to me, but maybe I'm being too lenient. There is nothing funny about the voting suppression laws and Congress' inability to combat those -- I really doubt that she disagrees with me about that, but I also really wish she'd learn how to stifle the cackle.

R148 That's true of most of the Morning Joe crowd. In my view, no one was more responsible for getting Trump elected than Joe Scarborough; he absolutely lavished attention on Trump during the Republican primary, particularly in the early stages. I don't know if he ever came out publicly with a mea culpa, but I'm convinced that he realized his own responsibility for the disaster and so devoted himself to nonstop Trump criticism. Having said that, and regarding Eddie Glaude, I find it nearly impossible to figure out how Black people should regard the Democratic Party. Clintonism meant the deliverance of the Democratic Party to neoliberalism and Wall Street, which in turn did great damage (to put it mildly) to working people and, of course, to Black people. But then, given the completely open hostility of the Republican Party to Black people these days, how can they not support Democrats?

[quote] he realized his own responsibility for the disaster and so devoted himself to nonstop Trump criticism
I think that's true of nearly all the Republican (or ex-Republican) "never Trumpers." They were the ones who helped make the Republican Party into what it is today, pandered to the far-right fringe, and created the environment in which someone like Trump was able to run for president and win. And they knew exactly what they were doing. But they overestimated their ability to control the Republican base. They naively thought that once Trump (or someone like him) was in office, they would be able to convince him and his supporters to tone down the craziness instead of turning it up to full blast.

What a nice story on Rachel Maddow's show just now -- about America having taken refugees from VietNam and Iraq to Guam after American troops withdrew from the refugees' countries. And now the same will be done for Afghans who helped U.S. troops there as translators. The Gov. of Guam (who's encouraged Biden to do that) appeared and spoke about how much Guam wants to help people in this position. I haven't seen a positive report on this show in a long time and it's nice to hear about something more or less happy for a change.

R163, Hunt may have friends and/or relatives whom she trusts to take care of the baby while she's at work. Otherwise, she must have somehow managed to figure out how to hire help who's vaccinated to do that -- such as, use an agency that provides qualified, bonded, insured, vaccinated nannies. Many of the hosts on MSNBC are acting like assholes in criticizing Biden. I wish they would stop blasting him about the filibuster. He does not have enough votes in the Senate to end it. What do they think he can do? For Biden to be able to succeed, the Democrats have tp have at least 52 senators to overcome Manchiin and that idiot from Arizona.

R184 - There isn't the luxury of time re what Rachel (and Richard Engel) addressed - namely, helping the Afghans, who were translaters for U.S. troops, get out of the country before they are round up by the Taliban.
In fact Guam's governor appeared on the previous night's show and spoke about how much they want to help those Afghans relocate in the same way Guam assisted South Vietnamese and Iraqis in similar situations in the past.
This isn't a matter of "give Biden a chance."
Time is running out for these Afghans who were expecting the Americans to be there for them the way they were for the Americans.

I think it's also important for the MSNBC hosts -- and rightly so -- to demonstrate that although this is the network that appeals to Democrats/liberals, they're not going to shy away from criticizing Biden and the Democrats when warranted (unlike what Fox did where it came to Trump and the Rethugs).
by Anonymous | reply 187 | July 10, 2021 4:56 PM |

It looked to me like he was inside a car. But it was hard to tell. Yes, it was odd.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | July 14, 2021 4:45 AM |
R225: Thanks for your apology, though you may have me confused with someone else because I don't think I'm "constantly harping on how awful the black hosts on MSNBC are". The fact is, Jason Johnson appears very often (either as a guest or a substitute host) and Joy Reid has her own show every weekday, so there is frequent occasion to comment on their performances. But I stopped watching them once I realized that they weren't improving, so the most I usually do is agree with someone else's criticism of them.
And I wish it could go without saying that my dislike of those two loudmouths has nothing to do with their race, but apparently it can't be assumed that an anchor's race is irrelevant. The only other full-time black hosts I'm aware of are Joshua Johnson and Jonathan Capehart, both of whom are on at times when I'm not usually watching TV, but I've liked them fine whenever I've seen them. There are several black guests who appear frequently on shows that I watch most days and none of them offends me (I can't list their names, since my memory doesn't work), because they're articulate and knowledgeable and have something useful to say (without yelling). By the same token, there are white anchors that I dislike -- Chris Hayes is loud and hyper, Chuck Todd is pompous and superficial, Joe Scarborough is a jerk and his wife is stupid -- but I don't consider them lousy at their jobs because of their race.
And by the way, I'm not a Republican.

If I worked for MSNBC, I would have asked "Bernice" about all of MLK's extra-marital affairs, as well as how the FBI investigation into Joy's' "hacked computer" is going.
I love how they try to take some religious moral ground against gay people, yet they are the biggest hypocrites EVER!
Rofl! Fucking cunts.

MSNBC wants us to forget about Barnicle's plagiarism. They also want us to forget about Doris Kearns Goodwin's plagiarism. They want us to forget about Nicolle Wallace's work as communications director for George Bush. They want us to forget that Tim Miller, in his work for a Republican PR firm, tried to discredit Facebook's critics by linking them to boogeyman George Soros. And they want us to forget Bill Kristol's history, including pushing Sarah Palin onto the national political stage.

Why does Claire's TV show have to be on at some unearthly hour when most of us DLers are still passed out? I'd suggest she replace Haley Jackson in the 10 am slot and have a huge hit for MSNBC.

Way Too Early usually bleeds right into Morning Joe... so the host needs to be someone that can be a frequent guest and gets along well with the folks on Morning Joe.

There's no reason they couldn't change the format and make Way Too Early and Morning Joe two distinct programs. (Didn't it used to be that way?)

Or they could just forget about live news so early in the morning and make it a straightforward baking show that's recorded, so McCaskill doesn't have to get up before sunrise. She could editorialize about politics while the day's goodies are baking, and some trainee could break in every half hour with a brief live news update.

Whoever suggested a baking show for Claire, has me cracking up.
I think she would be totally insulted by that.
Yes, she's Frautastic.
But the woman is a former U.S. Senator. I highly doubt she would consider a "baking show" to be worthy of her background.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | July 19, 2021 3:23 AM |
R386, she'd be welcome to pontificate about politics while whipping egg whites. Modern women needn't confine themselves to one thing at a time, and there's as much honor in baking a beautiful cake as in being a politician (many people might say there's more).
by Anonymous | reply 387 | July 19, 2021 3:29 AM |
[quote] But the woman is a former U.S. Senator. I highly doubt she would consider a "baking show" to be worthy of her background.
Have you seen her on MSNBC, broadcasting from her kitchen, always with a different cake in the background? Baking is one of her many talents. She's even posted recipes on Twitter. She probably knows more about baking than most of the idiots on the Food Network.
Besides, it wouldn't be purely a baking a show. She would talk about voting rights, COVID vaccines, GOP craziness, etc., as she's mixing the ingredients. She could even invite some of her former Senate colleagues to join her as guests in her kitchen. It would be a hoot.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | July 19, 2021 3:30 AM |
Lol R387 and R388.
I'm not arguing with you!
Personally, I would love nothing more than to see Claire doing a show with exactly what you're talking about. You especially, R388.
But nowdays, you never know how people will react to those suggestions.
She seems good humored enough to take those things in stride, and have a good laugh with us.
But then there are others, who would go absolutely berserk, and call for you to be cancelled just for the thought of it!

by Anonymous | reply 390 | July 19, 2021 3:36 AM |
"Kitchen Table Issues with Claire McCaskill." The feisty ex-senator invites you into her home as she bakes cakes and dishes about politics. A delicious addition to MSNBC's programming menu.

Not just for MSNBC, but across all cable news networks.

Joy Reid is a guest tonight on Steven Colbert - will she be sporting her braided coif or maybe something a bit more demure? It would be interesting to see what she wears tonight on her show The ReidOut and if that carries over to her guest spot on Colbert. If someone is subbing for her on The ReidOut then maybe she could wear a Do-rag with a big Afro pic hanging from her neck which would through a big curve to her fans! The Colbert audience would love it!

This doubt that Claire would consider a baking show worthy of her background as a onetime U.S. Senator: U.S. Senator is a category that includes Chuck Grassley and Rand Paul. It's not all that exalted.

Joy was great on the Late Show w/Steven Colbert - she appeared to have the same do & outfit as she did on her ReidOut show earlier. I enjoyed her being the one having to answer questions for a change and she was on point as usual. In spite of any particular leanings she may have, her knowledge and ability to communicate well are something I really appreciate and gain knowledge on current topics.

[quote]Joy was great on the Late Show w/Steven Colbert - she appeared to have the same do & outfit as she did on her ReidOut show earlier.
I believe anytime MSNBC's primetime hosts appear on late-night talk shows, those shows are usually taped around 4:30 in the afternoon, so she likely had already done Colbert's show before heading back to the studio to host her own show live last night (which accounts for why she had on the same outfit).
by Anonymous | reply 419 | July 21, 2021 1:12 AM |
R419 - I agree - My comment (406) did not reference that fact (time of taping, etc.). As I mentioned she was really great (as usual) and I watch her ReidOut show every evening (except when being subbed). She is impressively smart and becoming more informed is a good thing which is why I watch.

Claire was hosting the first hour Thursday for Nicolle again, hopefully she will again tomorrow. Michael Steele is hosting the second hour today.
Joe Scarborough is annoying as hell as is Mika in another way but the show is better with him than without him, when Mika is off you only notice because Willy takes over her role of sending us to commercial. If Mika really knew her value, she would be refunding MSNBC some of her pay.

Thankfully the officers at today's House Hearing on the January 6 Terrorist Attack presented uncensored, no-holds-barred, non-apologetic testimonies. The squeamish be damned; the American people and the world need to hear what transpired on Capitol Hill verbatim.
However, during the 3pm hour, MSNBC chose to edit the phrase "fucking nigger," bleeping out the word "fucking" while letting "nigger" stand. Whose decision was this? Let your viewers hear the truth as presented by the witnesses.
