Raymond Burr was really fat. And not very attractive.

Was he ever thin?

How did he attract a boyfriend?

What was his appeal in Hollywood?

I have more questions than answers!

Would he have been considered a "bear" in today's parlance?

He opened his rear window.

He actually looked better when he got older.

Back in the days before gay liberation and suppression was in full force a lot of people took what they could get in terms of sex, good looks were secondary.

He had a good head of hair.

Howard Stern talks about Raymond Burr. Apparently Howards father worked with Burr on some projects and apparently Burr was quite "queeny" in real life. I think he played the bad guy in most of his movie work.

He was apparently quite fond of gravy.

He should've changed his name to Burr Raymond.

Who wants to be named after a weed or a 'an unwanted piece of material'?

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2021 4:57 AM

He looks like he smells.

He was told to lose weight to get the Perry Mason role. Which he did. Notice how much thinner he looks in the first few seasons. Then the weight crept back.

On a related note, I saw an old movie from the Thirties on TCM recently. One of the leads was William Hopper, who played Paul Drake on PM. "Mason" premiered in the late Fifties, so Hopper must have been no spring chicken when he was on the show.

There's something Clooney-ish about his face, maybe it's the eyes.

IIRC, the producers hired Raymond Burr on the condition that he'd lose about 50 lbs to play the handsome lead of the Perry Mason TV series that debuted in 1957.

Burr was so motivated to play the "Perry Mason" role he surprised the producers by losing closer to 75-100 lbs by the start of production.

If you watch the series, you can see that Burr struggled with his weight over the course of the series,

And he gained a lot of the weight back by the end of the series run in 1965.

He was much heavier in the 1954 "Rear Window" movie than he was in the "Perry Mason" debut in 1957

Only when he and Paul were DPing Della.

He was also (1) Hedda Hopper's son, and (2) Rhoda's daddy in "The Bad Seed."

by Anonymousreply 20June 28, 2021 2:05 AM

It wasn’t really heavy ..was he ?…..didn’t they use special padding to make him look heavy ? earlier films he looks fairly slim.

by Anonymousreply 21June 28, 2021 2:08 AM
