Let's revisit Ordinary People

I just rewatched this after 25+ years. What an extraordinary case study of upper middle class society in the very early 80's. It took my breath away at times.

Why don't they make movies like this anymore?

BUCK wouldn't have started a thread on this topic

by Anonymousreply 1June 17, 2021 4:54 AM

Yes, OP.

We simply don't discuss MTM's character enough here.

by Anonymousreply 2June 17, 2021 4:55 AM

It really is a great film.

Donald Sutherland should have been nominated.

I adore Raging Bull, Coal Miner's Daughter, Tess, and The Elephant Man but am totally fine with Ordinary People winning Best Picture. I know many people have said that Raging Bull should have won, but I think both films are great and both are worthy of the win.

Didn't Mary Tyler Moore's son commit suicide around the time this movie came out? Oh yeah. He was 'playing' Russian roulette.

I think many DLers had mothers just like Beth Jarrett.

by Anonymousreply 12June 17, 2021 5:07 AM

Conrad would be 58-60 years old in 2021. Beth would be an old, bitter crone.

by Anonymousreply 13June 17, 2021 5:08 AM

¿ Because they are really really depressing?

by Anonymousreply 14June 17, 2021 5:10 AM

[quote]Conrad would be 58-60 years old in 2021. Beth would be an old, bitter crone.

And Buck would still be dead.

by Anonymousreply 15June 17, 2021 5:12 AM

“You can’t save French Toast.”

by Anonymousreply 16June 17, 2021 5:14 AM

OP Buck thinks you are redundant.

by Anonymousreply 17June 17, 2021 5:14 AM

[quote]Christmas in London would be like something out of Dickens.

I think this is the funniest line.

by Anonymousreply 18June 17, 2021 5:19 AM

I’m glad Connie’s girlfriend eventually married that English Earl.

by Anonymousreply 19June 17, 2021 5:26 AM

Timothy Hutton is 61.

by Anonymousreply 20June 17, 2021 5:34 AM

While Buck is dead.

I smell French toast and regret.

by Anonymousreply 22June 17, 2021 5:48 AM

Why ARE so many gay guys obsessed with this bourgeois movie? I was in college when it came out and we laughed at all the cliched melodrama. "You need to get in touch with your FEELings" etc. etc.

by Anonymousreply 23June 17, 2021 5:51 AM

23. Arf Arf, Arf

by Anonymousreply 24June 17, 2021 5:56 AM

Timothy Hutton was the Chalamet of his day.

by Anonymousreply 25June 17, 2021 6:04 AM

Buck would never have got Corona Virus!

-Beth Jarrett.

by Anonymousreply 26June 17, 2021 6:08 AM

I found the novel today in one of those free libraries you see around town. I read it when the movie first came out but haven't since. Looking forward to revisiting it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 12, 2022 10:08 PM

I never liked this movie even though I’ve fetishized the timeframe this movie came out in. Basically 1978-1982. This film and the acting by the son and MTM we’re rigid and at times overwrought.

by Anonymousreply 28March 12, 2022 10:23 PM

I really love this movie, and It has held up since it first came out.

[quote] Why don't they make movies like this anymore?

They do. Not all movies today are aimed at males between 16 and 45. There are some dealing with relationships, personal struggles, and other adult topics.

Silver Linings Playbook and Moonlight are two, off the top of my head.

by Anonymousreply 29March 12, 2022 10:31 PM

It does t hold up in 2022. It’s very of it’s time if not regressive for 1979-1980.

by Anonymousreply 30March 12, 2022 10:48 PM

Today Beth would have Alzheimer's and think that Buck is still alive. So this worked out rather well for her.

by Anonymousreply 31March 12, 2022 11:03 PM

I grew up on the North Shore in this time period. It is very much of its time. Not regressive at all. Everybody’s parents went to see this movie. A lot of moms chilled the fuck out afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 32March 12, 2022 11:38 PM

Is this Conrad? I opened the book yesterday and found that b/w photo inside, it's probably a bookmark.

Is that the last photo of Conrad in existence? Maybe it fell to the floor when Beth took all Conrad's photos and burned them. I think the toothmarks are Pippin's, he tried to save the photo because he knew what Beth was doing.

Mrs. Jarrett simply doesn't get enough recognition for her sacrifices.

A child's life sometimes ends prematurely....but always permanently.

by Anonymousreply 34March 18, 2022 12:10 AM

Good god, I'm so old. I read "Ordinary People" when it was serialized in Redbook Magazine. Even before it was published as a book.

Yes, I read Redbook, and yes, I am gay. Or is that redundant?

by Anonymousreply 35March 18, 2022 12:34 AM

R34 That would be a photo of Buck, who never would have _______ed.

by Anonymousreply 36March 18, 2022 1:13 AM

They don’t make movies like this because: they need an intelligent screenplay, they need producers etc willing to go out on a limb and try something new, in lieu of the same old recycled garbage of comic books, violence and soft core porn.

It’s all about the money only

by Anonymousreply 37March 18, 2022 1:26 AM

Again? It’s very good but not THAT good lol

How upset were film critics and film snobs at the time that this won over Raging Bull?

Donald Sutherland was really cheated out of a nom, he was heartbreakingly good.
