White Nights, Mikhail Baryshnikov & Gregory Hines

I remember people going nuts over the fact they would be dancing together in this film.

Why don't we see talent like this anymore?

RIP Gregory

Weren’t they both instructed by a famous former childhood tap dancing heroine from World War II (Tappa, tappa, tappa)?

"Separate Lives" from the film was one of my favorite songs back in the '80s:

This is so nostalgic....

by Anonymousreply 3June 17, 2021 4:38 AM

I know right?

I love "Separate Lives" as well. Baryshnikov and Hines together = hot. I thought there was some speculation that Gregory Hines' death may have been from AIDS related complications and not cancer?

57 is very young.

I heard that as well. Never got any real confirmation on it though.

And choreography by Twyla Tharpe!

I knew Hines from Gold's Gym in Palm Springs...wonderful guy, and yes, probably gay.

by Anonymousreply 8June 18, 2021 2:29 AM

Twyla was my favorite choreographer at that time.

The AIDS rumors about Hines could be true.. Six years after he died his girlfriend died of cancer at a young age too. Did he infect her?

Gregory Hines was so talented. I miss him. He was so sexy on Will and Grace, one of the very few boyfriends of Grace I liked.

Remember Gregory's self-titled s(h)itcom? It was on for one year, 1998-1999ish. It's free on Crackle (app).

Why don’t we see talent like this anymore? I imagine a bit of that has to do with all the money spent on the DC and Marvel universes along with prequels, sequels, and reimaginations of previous materials.

Say You, Say Me...say what???!

One of my fave films growing up. Sadly I think that ship has sailed r14 - appreciation of beautiful art and talent whose definitions have also changed.

One of the greatest dance scenes on film. Both Hines and Baryshnikov were at the height of their beauty and talent.

I remember long ago reading why Baryshnikov said "And . . ." right before the start of the dance scene. Fucked if I remember why.

We don't have talent like this anymore because most of that talent has died, like Hines.

There's no real fostering of this type of entertainment anymore. No triple threats because why does an actor have to sing when we can just Auto-tune them? And use quick cuts to mask the lack of dance expertise?

Go to Broadway and watch a jukebox musical that dresses a bunch of songs around a flimsy story while you sit beside some fat-ass wearing track pants playing Angry Birds on his phone.

You never see or hear about tap dancing today. So what if it's loud and annoying? What gives?

by Anonymousreply 19July 26, 2022 6:22 AM

A great cast and great dance sequences. The Cold War thriller crafted around it was not great. Like most of Taylor Hackford's films, it could be described as "paunchy." Still, it takes us back to a time when a movie dealing with ballet and politics, starring mature people, was actually marketed to teens who watched MTV. Those videos by Collins/Martin and Richie were in heavy rotation.

Saw Hines frequently at Gold's in Palm Springs. He was def bi, if not gay. Beautiful man.
