Billie Eilish is an industry plant!
At some point the brother Finneas (who wrote and produced all the songs) realized that there was no place in the music industry for another pale, ugly Irish guy singing maudlin songs (spot already occupied by Ed Sheeran), so he had his little sister sing the songs instead. With the parents industry connections, the O' Connell children (Finneas and Billie) had an "in" that most musicians starting out don't have.
When you listen to the song's though, there's no "there" there. Very monotone, lacking in melody, basic production. I'm not seeing where Billie or Finneas are prodigies of music the way they have been hailed by the Grammys and the press.
It does seem that Billie is suffering a sophomore slump as all of her singles for the second album, Happier Than Ever, have flopped! Perhaps Eyelash will be the biggest "flash in the pan" in music history?

She actually has had a relatively organic rise to fame. She started publishing vids on youtube about 6-7 years ago. They took off slowly, but steadily, over the years. She's only dropped one album. And it sold in the Adele/Taylor/Gaga range.
So, I don't think she's an industry plant.
Now, criticism of her music is another thing altogether. I love it. Or I did. But the new songs are definitely lacking. Feel too one note.

"To some, the term applies to artists who are plucked out of obscurity and given a new sound and aesthetic at the direction of their record label, then jammed down the throats of consumers through avenues like playlists and radio. Others throw the term around more broadly, deeming any musician lucky enough to have a familial connection to the industry or the good fortune of financial resources as a plant."

Plus, yeah, she's unattractive, purposefully so. Her 'sexy lingerie' photo shoot, in British Vogue, was full of vintage lingerie, the serious kind with rubber panels to "sculpt", because she was too big for the cute era lingerie. She looked like an Eastern European prostitute serving a small town.

Lana Del Rey wasn't an industry plant. She had a dad who made money off of the stock market later in life and was just a standard Long Island upper middle class Catholic girl in upbringing. Industry plant literally means having direct connections with the industry - such as the artist Clairo, her dad is some kind of record executive - that allow for you to get a leg up. People just say industry plant when they mean popular artists they don't like/with well off parents.

She can sing and her brother has talent as a producer. I agree she is heavily pushed by the media in ways that seem unnatural. But she is far from the first or last industry plant. Britney, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez were all classic examples of industry plants. They had no musical talent but were given the cutting sound and excellent pop songwriters based on their looks and sex appeal alone. Rihanna at least grew as an artist and took control of her music and direction. Brit Brit and J. Lo need their producers to direct their sound for them. Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey were just rich girls that had money to get the doors opened for them but they wrote their songs and always had creative control. Nepotism will always exist and it's not always bad, Whitney Houston had nepotism but she was talented.

The point is the music industry has always manufactured stars who had little talent and used studio tricks to make them listenable e.g. Rihanna, Britney, etc. Billie seems odd because she has no charisma or energy on stage but she fits that apathetic e-girl look younger people like.

R19 People always use this argument against some singers, saying they're crap because they don't write their own songs... Whitney or Celine never wrote a single note either and no one says shit about them or questions their artistry. Now, Billie Eilish isn't anywhere near those two vocally and I'm not a fan by any means but she doesn't need to write her own music to be an artist or be appreciated by her fans. From what I've seen in an interview in her home studio and read occasionally she is very much involved in the production process and writes most of the lyrics. There are tons of esteemed music artists who don't write their own songs but no one cares and belittles them for that. It's just an argument used to attack some singer you don't like. Just be honest about why you don't like her. I don't like her music style. I don't need to go on about her not writing her own material or looks. This is usually an argument that comes from snobs who think real music is only playing an instrument and singing rock...
