Let's talk Ascot!
It's back this year with a limited ticket distribution. The Queen and the Cambridges did not attend today but everyone else seemed to be there.
Best dressed: Anne, the Princess Royal in what appears to be a sheath dress. I kid you not. Love the color.
I like Zara's dress. Unsure about Sophie's. Camilla's caftanning.

Camilla is not wearing a caftan; that's an A-line coat.

It's because she has big hair. Large pieces of jewelry look best on women with big hair.
The Queen gave Camilla free rein of all the big jewelry pieces Queen Mary and the Queen mother wore that she didn't want, and they all look great on Camilla.

r10, almost everyone female in attendance has on a new outfit for this event, do you really think they went out to spend a few hundred to thousands of pounds only to forget to ask for the day off from work (if they work)? Yes, they took the day off for the annual race, not all that shocking.

[Quote]don't any of these people have to work?
Considering who these people are, I imagine quite a lot of business deals have some kind of origin at Ascot. The British are too polite to call it networking.
Ascot ain't no Aintree. I do miss the Daily Mail coverage of that spectacle, especially Ladies' Day. Incredible photos of the cavalcade of fashion disasters, flesh spilling from dresses, and mass drunkenness. Good times.

Those that don't show up styled in garish outfits, party at the office watching the horse race. Elegance personified. My ot quibble would be the earrings, which I think are only suitable for evening wear. She should hzveveorn the smaller pearl and diamond earrings Diana wore so often and that Kate has now.
But that's hairsolitting. She looks like something out of a film here.

Agree with all the comments about Kate at Ascot. I was kind of disappointed to see the brown suede shoes that she wore with the polka dot dress.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 17, 2022 7:40 PM

Dear Fellow Hairsplitter: I think I agree. I think she didn't want to do black or white shoes so opted for a black brown and white look.
It's not without its charm, on further prrusal.
However, the obvious choice that would have finished this off to perfection were spectator pumps.
She would have gotten the two-tone look more gracefully, and resurrected a look so tony, so chic, so elegant as to dwarf all those stiletto heels that all wear.
I have been bemoaning the loss of the spectator pumps and cloche hat for years.
Kate could have single-handedly resurrected this most classic of shoe with onecwesring at Ascot this week.
What a missed opportunity!
She looked fantastic, anyway, but just the same, the smaller pearl and diamond earrings and spectator pumps, and you'd have had a magazine cover for the record books.

One non-sartorial note from Ascot: Princess Beatrice exchanging an affectionate embrace with Uncle Charles, the York's sworn enemy now.
A marked contrast to sister Pss Eugenie, who allied herself with the failed Sussexes in a fury at the Wales/Cambridge contempt for Andrew and Sarah.
Kudos to Bea, undoubtedly with the support of the canny Edo, for reading the room correctly. I said it here first, and I'll say it again: Bea is being a given a shot at being brought on as a working royal. The deal is clear: you're on the side of the monarchy, or the Sussexes, but you can't do both.

I think Kate’s hat and the dots on her dress are brown, like the shoes. Her clutch is definitely brown. It’s a little odd, because the drown makes it reminiscent of the dress Julia Robert’s wore on Pretty Woman and you’d think she would want to avoid that association, but she does look fantastic. My gripe with the shoes is that they seem super inappropriate for walking in grass. I’m not sure whether the appropriate response is admiration or eye rolling. Sometimes I think her posture suffers due to the sky high shoes she always wears (which I am convinced she chooses to look even slimmer), but her posture looks pretty good in these photos. It really is a gorgeous dress and perfect on her. It’s a slightly understated look, but there is actually a lot of detail and the shape and fit really suit her.

Looks like Eugenie, Jack and Sarah were no-shows.

I adore Lady Sarah Chatto’s looks. She keeps to a very narrow style: cashmere cardigan, pearls, full pleated skirts, hat with a downturned brim, neutral colors. Love it.

Edo and Beatrice looked smart and chic as they posed in front of a sculpture of a ram. The stunning piece of art was crafted by sculptor David Williams Ellis, who is also Edoardo's stepfather.

That's a lot of dressing up for three-four days in a row. And super expensive too.

Kate has really upped her game. I wonder if showing Meagain how its really done is a tiny part of it. William looks handsome in that top hat. Bald or not,he just oozes masculine energy. Yum 1

Bea has upped her game too. She looks lovely. Edo looks good too.

R90 That picture of Charlotte Hawkins is from last year. Someone else did copy that dress this year, though, though less successfully.

Is that true, R148?
Here's one of Hawkins on Day FIVE - how many damn days does this go for?

r146 Not so much showing her how it's done as their people likely telling them they have to come out with a return to more formal and reserved than being just one of the people they had been pushing the last decade or so. . .
Honestly, if Harry hadn't gone American.. they would have had more of a fight, he could have pimped out his body to Iran and it wouldn't be as much of a snafu even with Ferdie 2.1 in tow.
Though, really, it's just the shift in the trends towards sociocultural conservativism even with a leftwing branding... it's a trend among many of the other royal families, too. . . though certainly a balancing act between remaining stately without crossing the line into extravagant or excesss.
From a psychological perspective, it reassures the public of control and security as the economic woes and shortages draw up greater associations with the past. For the UK, WWII is the fundamental root of modern British society... it's also the scar that stings, so nearly every hardship or conflict gets pulled back into this multigenerational trauma. Even if the kiddies are largely unaware they've inherited it. It's also the spot of the stronger royal family and rose up the love for the Queen... which we saw brought up again in reflections on the Ukraine.
And given she's on her way out.. this transition to the next will have to play into that quite a bit as to not be dragged down by the surrounding controversies..
albeit, no doubt there isn't some court intrigue as a continued part of the character assassination to thoroughly severe any future disputes... that's just standard societal practice . . . certainly not limited to royals but this machiavellian standard is necessary for good govt, even just the public figure of one.

The men all wear those same striped trousers. I wonder if they have multiple pairs or just wear the same ones every day.

R90 And deservedly so! Hawkins' outfit is a bit more in the ice cream lolly mode, but it works on her. Both women looked fantastic.
Sophie's hats were nice, and her colours are nice, but, like Meghan, she seems challenged by fit around the bustline.
And she could stand to lose a stone or so.
But, hell, the whole Ascot/Derby thing is so reality-challenged as to be fun just on that basis.

Agree generally with R150, but I suspect she thinks about it almost not at all. She and her husband are waxing--her father-in-law will become king and then her husband. She worked hard to create an image that was successful despite the trashing for years by the UK press and those jealous of her success or anti-monarch. She'll keep applying those standards as she and her husband maintain their popularity while Charles and Camilla's popularity slowly increases. Meanwhile the recent moves made by the RF were quite successful in putting the Harkles in their place, so the RF has a strategy in place. I think Camilla and Catherine are steadying influences so things like the freedom to visit the UK as desired and the available lease on Frogmore Cottage won't be removed.
