His squealing like a pig made him a star in Deliverance in 1972.
You missed it by about 8 minutes, OP, but at least your headline is Datalounge-worthy.

He was a very talented actor who appeared in many classic films. His Otis in Superman was a total delight, and his chemistry with his costars was palpable.
Can I have his stuff?

He did a lot of theater before his movie debut in "Deliverance", and then returned to the stage in the 90s.
As Cap'n Andy in "Show Boat" (1996).

I've always thought it was weird that both he and Gene Hackman stopped acting halfway through their lives.
They used to be in EVERYTHING.

I’ll bet R17’s observation at least partially answers R16’s implied question.

"On Broadway he won critical praise (and a Drama Desk Award) for his portrayal of Big Daddy in a revival of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,' a role he had first played as a 21-year-old in a stock company production. He created controversy, however, when he was quoted in The New York Times on the skills of his young co-stars, Ashley Judd and Jason Patric. 'Ashley is a sweetie,' he said, 'and yet she doesn’t have a lot of tools.' Of Patric, he remarked: 'He’s gotten better all the time, but his is a different journey.'"

He and Hackman both worked into their 70s. How many 140 year-olds do you know?
I'm an actor, and I'm only in my fifties and I have always had trouble memorizing my lines, and that gets even harder as one ages. I think lots of actors hit their seventies and struggle with that, or maybe they're just exhausted.

As someone who merely took drama in high school, I’m always amazed by an actor’s ability to remember that shit. I truly am. Especially when it doesn’t roll off the tongue because it’s not something you would ordinarily say.
