And how many Trump judges were confirmed by this point in his first 6 months in office?

4th judge today!
Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmed as DC circuit judge replacing Garland
hers was the closest vote so far. Only Collins, Graham and Murkowski joined the 48 Democrats and 2 Independents
this is on the appeals court which is of course quite important

There are procedural steps to take first you crazed know-nothings. Trust me, the idea has been to fill these vacancies as quickly as possible, that's what we're seeing starting now!

As Lawrence O'Donnell just said on msnbc, Republicans are literally a heartbeat away from a Senate majority. Should a Dem Senator has a heart attack or something and is replaced by a Repug, hello Turtle.
There's not a minute to waste because you don't know what the next will bring.

If they’re nominated, which there’s a possibility they won’t be, but if they are, it’s years from now when you want to be worried, not now.

Huh? The comment was about a judge that had been confirmed/ What do you mean "nominated" and "it’s years from now?"

Qurashi is suppose to be adjudicating according to US laws, not his personal beliefs. And if it is found that his personal beliefs influence his rulings, then he should be speedily removed from the bench, all of his rulings vacated and he should be prosecuted.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 17, 2021 3:15 AM |
Why would a Muslim be any less likely to adjudicate according to US laws? The same charges were thrown at Catholics, who it was feared would be loyal first to Rome and not the US.

I don't want any pro religious person to be a fucking judge. That includes a Muslim! Don't care if you happen to have a faith, but if religion is a big enough part of your life to be included in, say, a self-description on a dating app? Fuck the hell off. You shouldn't be a judge.
How weird that liberals think that's some sort of good thing.
That said, big kudos to the other appointees. Keep 'em coming Joe.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 21, 2021 6:01 AM |
R50 not true. We mostly only hear about the cases the Supreme Court takes. There are so many cases that get ruled on at the lower levels and stop there, so judges at all levels matter. The repubs in the last 4 years really took advantage of all the openings McConnell held from the Obama years and rammed through over 200 right wing nutters which is horrible. It's crucial the Democrats fill every open seat by the midterms next year
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 21, 2021 7:08 AM |
True up to a point, R52. But on the matters of greatest jurisprudential concern, including but not limited to reproductive rights, it’s the Supreme Court that establishes the controlling precedents.

20th judge confirmed today!
Myrna Perez to be judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by vote of 48-43
as you can see several senators were not in attendance to vote. This was by far the closet vote so far and I believe it's the first time Collins has not voted to confirm a Biden judicial nominee. All 48 votes were Democrats and all 43 no's were repubs
the Second Circuit Court of Appeals is unfortunately 1 of the courts in which Trump & McConnell were able to run amok and got 5 judges confirmed. Currently with today's confirmation there is a 6-6 split of left and right wing judges with 1 spot open for confirmation.

R84 Biden has a whole slew of nominees he announced. The Senate Judiciary Committee is the one that needs to get moving faster. They haven't held hearings yet for most of the nominees. There are only 3 left they've vetted and approved that the full Senate hasn't voted on yet for confirmation.

Good for them and good for OP for this terrific thread.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 18, 2021 2:13 AM |
1 startling thing I never realized in making and maintaining this thread was that there are still a number of judges from the Nixon/Ford/Carter/Reagan eras around the country. Most of them have "senior status" and thus enjoy a reduced schedule while still getting paid quite handsomely. There are a handful of judges from the Reagan period still active full schedule judges though
so the sad part is that a number of the more than 200 judges Trump/McConnell confirmed will be sucking away taxpayer money 40-50 years from now while making lots of bad rulings

Does it strike anyone as weird that the Senate has to vote on these judges like this? Why can't they set up some governmental agency to do it? Surely they have things they would rather be putting on the agenda then endless confirmation hearings.
It kind of defeats the point of separation of powers as well.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 18, 2022 2:42 AM |
R123 it is precisely for separation of powers. They don't want a President's appointees confirming judges. This way you have the executive branch appointing someone for the judicial branch and has to be approved by the legislative branch.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 18, 2022 2:47 AM |
R124. Except it hasn't exactly worked out that way what with all this drama about the Supreme Court. In the UK, judges are appointed by a Selection Commission and they have a Governmental Minister who essentially rubber-stamps the candidate. They have very limited veto power.
Seems it would be perfectly workable in the US. The Selection Commission could be composed of the judiciary with a mix of individuals from the legal community.

The number isn't as impressive once you take a look under the hood, i.e. the courts they've been confirmed to. You'll see it's all blue states, with the occasional swing state thrown in. Only one seat in the tenth and the sixth circuit has been filled. The conservative circuits and districts are waiting him out, just as the liberal ones had done under Trump.

Many of the new judges are replacing Clinton-era judges who are retiring. They're swapping like with like, and not exactly altering the balance of the federal courts.
Severe damage was done late in Obama's term, when a lot of Carter/Clinton judges retired on the assumption that Barry O would replace them. But Mitch McDick kept their seats vacant until Trump took office, and poured in right-wing judges to fill those seats.

the pace has been good but I hope they keep confirming at a faster pace. They should act like they're going to lose the senate
there are around 60 nominees left to confirm
there are more open seats Biden needs to nominate too. 1 surprising thing is Biden has so far not nominated anyone for the openings in the southern district of Florida or the open spot on the 11th Circuit which oversees Florida. Maybe he's purposely avoiding it while the Trump case plays out I don't know, but it's weird he hasn't nominated anyone there yet

r169 You say potato, others say potatoh (This following is ALSO from Pew)
"Looking at the U.S. public as a whole, however, the answer to the question of whether more education is correlated with less religion appears to be yes. Among all U.S. adults, college graduates are considerably less likely than those who have less education to say religion is “very important” in their lives: Fewer than half of college graduates (46%) say this, compared with nearly six-in-ten of those with no more than a high school education (58%).
Highly educated Americans also are less inclined than others to say they believe in God with absolute certainty and to pray on a daily basis. And, when asked about their religious identity, college graduates are more likely than others to describe themselves as atheists or agnostics (11% of college grads vs. 4% of U.S. adults with a high school education or less).

And to add many people will identify with Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Out of their cultural heritage too. They still acknowledge that upbringing is part of who they are. It doesn't mean they are crazy fundies. And if someone is educated and still religious they are less likely to be right-wing, fear-driven, socially conservative and fall for fundamentalist propaganda. Less likely to center their careers around their religion. They keep their faith private and respect others. In many ways they are true believers because they trust their god(s) and religion enough to not force it down others throats.

now that Democrats have 51 senate seats, the pace of judicial confirmations in 2023 can pick up even faster. Since there won't be much legislation getting done, there's no reason why every single open judicial seat can't be filled by December 2024. Currently there are over 50 nominations waiting to be confirmed. There are also a number of open seats or pre-announced seats that will be open next year for which Biden has yet to make a nomination. Also a given that more judges will announce senior status or retirement in 2023 and 2024 so Biden admin could well match Trump's 200+ judicial confirmations by this time 2024 if they make it a priority. I think there will be a lot of public and liberal media pressure for them to do so too given all the shitty rulings we've seen and are expecting soon
