The premise is silly, but interesting. Almost feels like an action version of "The Lost Boys" at times. Very exciting action for the time. My only real objection is Keanu. He's really bad in this in - even for him. Outrageously miscast. Kathryn Bigelow supposedly fought really hard for him. She was probably thinking too much with her vagina. On Paper, Patrick Swayze is miscast, but somehow works.

This movie might be Keanu at his most beautiful.
It's also a perfectly enjoyable over-the-top action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The ending is very affecting. Even surfers unironically love it.
And it largely works because Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze are so utterly sincere and earnest with the gnarly dialogue and new age mumbo jumbo. Even Gary Busey is excellent in it. It’s a heterosexual love story, as all great sports movies are.

This movie just works. Keanu is a terrible actor but he's so sweet and beautiful and his voice is relaxing. He's the perfect movie star unlike Miss Cruise.
