Lukewarm 74% so far.
I hope it’s available for home rental on Friday. If so, I’ll be watching from home with my popcorn and licorice (and booze).

On some of the ads for the film, Stone looks like Eva Green.,
Green would have been a MUCH better Cruella. But she's not a star alas...

Emma is no Glenn.

I like Stone and think she's talented. More versatile and funnier than, say, Jennifer Lawrence.
That said, this project looks and feels unnecessary. It could be silly campy fun, but it probably won't even be that--gays of a certain age are NOT the target audience here.

by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 28, 2021 10:53 AM |
I don't trust early reviews at all since Wonder Woman 1984. Its early reviews were featured on Twitter before the movie came out, and every reviewer called it things like "transcendent," said it dealt with sophisticated themes that elevated the genre, it was the best movie of the year, an Oscar contender, etc. I liked the first movie and was excited.
Then the movie turned out to be about a magic wishing rock and it had a totally unnecessary extra hour of boring action sequences. It's almost bad enough to call a disaster.
SO MANY pre-release reviews from critics lavished it with praise, and then after it was released the score dropped like a stone in a wishing well. It seems like the reviewers had to have been bribed somehow, and like it may have been agreed upon for the sake of getting people to go back to movies during the pandemic. It really backfired for me.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 28, 2021 11:10 AM |

No one at Disney can tell a good script from a bad script anymore. All they can tell is "ooh, pwetty cowors" and make the soundtrack as loud and bombastic as possible. Their recent musicals are autotuned abortions.

It should even be a mini-series!!!!! The movie flew by, 134 minutes was too short!!! Yes, I know some eldergays can't hold their piss longer than 90 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 28, 2021 2:43 PM |
Some of the most popular and successful movies of all-time are longer than this, R35. But they have enough story to justify that kind of length and this does not.

OMG! Glenn was an executive producer! It must have killed her to see Emma killing this role!!!
Well, "Il gattopardo" could slog through 190 minutes with barely anything ever happened, then this movie needed no 500 years of fighting to fill the time though. Such a great fun, very enjoyable!!!

[quote]Nowadays, there is hardly a classic female villain who hasn’t been reinvented or origin-mythed on a quasi-feminist basis. (Maybe the three witches in Macbeth should get this treatment, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Elle Fanning and Kirby Howell-Baptiste – who’s actually in this film, playing Estella’s smart mate, Anita.) But the politics of Cruella de Vil are more generational than sexual. She wants to be like her role-model heroine and then wipe her out. It’s not the dog’s skin Cruella wants to rip off and wear, it’s the Baroness’s. She wants to inhabit and destroy.

I loved it. It was a blast. The costumes, the music, the acting, the script - everything was top tier. The most hate I'm seeing are from people who are whining about how they don't see how this Cruella turns into the Cruella from the films or from people who think the bit about the Dalmatians was stupid.

Are R73, R74, R75 AND r76 all the same retard? It seems so. At any rate, they are continuing to embarrass themselves. R75 is particularly pathetic, creaming in his frilly pink panties about a Disney prequel about Cruella De Ville. He must be the product of a sexual encounter between close relatives. That seems a likely explanation for his mental retardation. Poor sod, What a sad, lonely life he must lead.

The impression I got from seeing a few clips of Emma Stone in this, is that she's too young for the role, or she's playing it too mature, which is why it comes off as unconvincing.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | June 6, 2021 6:55 AM |
R126 - I think there's a story behind anyone being evil. For women, estrogen is distinctly different than testosterone and it doesn't engender violence as much as men.
I think it's interesting they're doing backstories - just like The Joker - as to what makes people this way. It is humanizing but also shows how continual mistreatment can fuck people up.
I applaud it. Now, if they can figure out why Republicans are so god damn evil - that's the true mystery. They're all villains in my eyes.

The film was terrible. No redeeming characters (unless you consider a racial quota in the cast as redemption), no character development in the script, no positive role models or life lessons for the preteen girls who will watch this. The message was, "the only way you can be successful is if you're nastier than your opponent". Making a film about the come up of a villain who wants to skin puppies for their fur and using the "sad childhood = bad adult" angle is so egregiously immoral for children to watch that I cannot even begin to describe its ramifications. The mouse is a soul destroying corporate behemoth who will stop at nothing to suck dry every last drop of creativity from their intellectual property acquisitions. The only good thing about it was the soundtrack.

[quote] No redeeming characters (unless you consider a racial quota in the cast as redemption), no character development in the script, no positive role models or life lessons for the preteen girls who will watch this.
Not every movie needs a redeeming character. I would say there actually was character development, though rushed, unlike most movies.
This is not a movie for kids or preteens, and perhaps Disney should have made that more clear, but it just isn’t. Sometimes you do have to be a bitch to win.
I’m glad I saw it in a theater, because I would have been annoyed if I paid $30 on Disney+, but I think it was a good $10 well spent.
The parachute at the end was bullshit (surely they could have come up with something better than that), but otherwise I thought it was a solid film.

Movies with no redeeming characters tend to be very hard to watch. I've tried watching a few and I could never get through them.

[quote]I think it's interesting they're doing backstories - just like The Joker - as to what makes people this way. It is humanizing but also shows how continual mistreatment can fuck people up.
This film showed that Cruella always had a mean streak; that's why her nickname was Cruella. We're showed her mother warning her about letting "Cruella" come out. By the end of the film Estella frees herself from trying to keep that side of herself tamped down.
People keep saying she hated the Dalmatians because of her mother's death when she never blamed the dogs - she initially blamed herself, then when she realized The Baroness had the locket and The Baroness spoke disparagingly about her mother, she went on her campaign of vengeance.
Variety gives reasons why "Cruella" the best movie of the year, so far.

I liked it a lot. Interesting plot. Two fine actors. Great costumes.
What's not to like?

Was it Dick Van Dyke's Cockney-level bad or just not convincing?

Emma Thompson is a racist bitch who should be blacklisted for her racism.

Girls. Girls. Raving over this film isn't going to get you Annual Passes to the Disney parks, so shut the fuck up.

Yeah, that's why folks like it.

While Glenn is a better Cruella than Emma, the film as a whole is better than the 1996 live adaption. The plot is much more for adults than it is for kids, which makes the parts of the 1996 live adaptation boring as hell unless Cruella is involved.
At almost 2 1/2 hours long, it is worth it due to the story that needs to be told. Besides, Emma Stone channeling Miranda Priestly was worth it. Of course, Miranda Priestly was more likable.

Is that what she was doing?

I'm guessing the film isn't another Maleficent, i.e. rehabilitation of a Disney villain? Cruella wants to kill puppies. She makes Jafar look like a choirboy.

That Touchstone movie I got an Oscar nomination for back in the 1980s has a four-letter word in its name that more accurately describes her, R143.

A film critic said "despite a game performance by Emma Stone" the title character of this movie "never becomes more interesting than just a nasty-natured person awash in self-pity and revenge." The movie also achieves the dubious feat of being "tedious, transgressive, chaotic, and inert at the same time" and unfortunately the movie "can't let go of the idea that this dog murderer must be likable" and so it recasts Cruella as a mischievous former street orphan who turns theatrically cruel when she beings apprenticing under an imperious older fashion designer. Sounds like a right mess to me.

What bothers me is that Cruella basically embraces her DNA heritage of being evil and it's declared a big empowerment moment. There's anti heroine and then there's watching an origin story of a cunt. IMO Cruella is the latter.

I saw this yesterday, being a fan of Emma Thomson and Emma Stone. The former is given very little to do in this. She is a great comic and dramatic actress, but all she is required to do in this is grimace. She could do this part on autopilot, and that is exactly what she seems to do. The Baroness could be a great, campy villainess but she somehow lacks charisma and a convincing inner life.
Stone’s character is very unlikeable. There is no-one in this film to root for. I think we are supposed to root for Stone, but she seems both unpleasant and dull. The tone of the story is dark, and the message seems to be that the world is a horrible place, so it’s best to toughen up and use people to get what you want.
It’s about an hour too long. I actually fell asleep for about 15 minutes and I don’t think I missed much. I don’t think the film-makers really knew what tone they were going for. I think kids would find this too adult, and adults would find it boring. It’s not dramatic enough to be a drama, or comedic enough to be a comedy.
On the plus side, the sound track is great.

Margo Robbie and Emma Stone need for Harley and Cruella to do a crossover film together.

Worldwide box office is at $129 million, unfortunately the budget was estimated to be between 100 and 200 million. I'm curious as to how much Disney has raked in from Disney+ subscribers who paid for Premier Access.

"Cruella wants to kill puppies"
Except she doesn't. That was addressed clearly in the film and I thought it was a really interesting way to twist a villain who haunted my childhood. The Dalmatian coat was a fake and she actually loves dogs. The scene where Artie tells her everyone believes the coat was real and she says, "People need a villain" was interesting.
I actually really enjoyed the film. I thought Stone was fantastic and the music was great. Just a fun, popcorn film for a warm almost summer day. I loved the cgi dogs, especially Winky. And I didn't think it was about her being bad as much as it was about her coming to terms with her "bad" side and embracing it because it made her more powerful. The scene at the fountain at the end was really well done by Stone. You could see that her adoptive mother's love is what redeemed her from turning out like the Baroness completely. It's been years since I've seen 101 Dalmatians but I'd actually like to go back and watch it now to see if it changes the Cruella that scared the crap out of me as a kid. Seems like her whole Dalmatian fetish was simply a ruse now to keep herself in the public eye. Fun film for some lighthearted comedy.

Good Lord this movie sucked…such lazy filmmaking. The soundtrack alone tells you everything…the same tired music everyone always uses: She’s a Rainbow. For what, the 10th high profile use of it since The Stones began licensing it? Nina Simone, Ohio Players, ELO, Rose Royce. This music is used all the time. There’s so much music out there: do some fucking work.

Did Emma Store really dye her pubic hair for the role? I was heard that she did but the scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

I liked the movie a lot. I'm surprised how much I liked it, actually. It was fun and clever. YouTube constantly plays the clip of Emma and Emma facing off ("Wot is your name?" "Cruella." "Oh! That's...fabulous!") as an ad and I watch it almost every time because of their delivery. Emma Thompson especially is hard not to watch.
