The Girl on the Train (2016) is absolute SHIT!
What a waste of time this film was. It was so bad. God Emily Blunt’s acting was terrible. Just terrible! And Justin Theroux as the bad guy? Who didn’t see that coming from a mile away?
They were very obviously trying to capture what Gone Girl did before it, but failed.
Emily Blunt doesn’t work as a lead but Hollywood keeps pushing her.
Also WHET Haley Bennett? She was being pushed as the next big thing for a second, and suddenly cast in tons of things then out of nowhere she vanished.

I laughed at Blunt's "drunk" scenes. What a mess!

R1 me too! And I remember people praising her performance after the movie came out, with her even being in Oscar talk and some were outraged when she didn’t get nominated. Why? She was AWFUL! The whole film is a mess. Theroux doesn’t even look like he wants to be there, Bennett looks like a Dollar Tree J Law, Luke Evans is underused, and the script is terrible.
Rebecca Ferguson was the only decent thing

I think she’s an awful actress any way but you could tell she did no research into what being an alcoholic is like. She simply went through the motions. A younger Naomi Watts would’ve nailed the part.

All I really remember is her stumbling around that park like a drunken idiot.

R3 100% agree. She was great in The Devil Wears Prada, her breakout role, but since then? She’s sucked.

She was good in Prada (and nothing since) but I feel she just played herself: a snarky and sarcastic b*tch

I read the book.. not a masterpiece of writing but good, fun entertainment and it was funny how the main character kept sneaking cans of alcohol on the train every day.

I, too, thought Blunt would have a great career after The Devil Wears Prada. But that's really been her only strong performance.
The Girl on the Train was indeed shit. But, to be fair, the book was terrible too. I remember reading it and hating the lead character. Blunt made her slightly more likable but just barely..
Haley Bennett fucked director Joe Wright who was married to Anoushka Shankar. They shacked up and had a kid. Bennett's social media is strange. Odd woman.

Emily Blunt gets to go home to some John Krasinski cock. Lucky girl.

She got a BAFTA and SAG nomination for it, along with Amy Adams for Arrival. The Oscars rejected them both and went with Isabelle Huppert and Ruth Negga instead.
After Prada she was great in Sunshine Cleaning - her and Adams as sisters was a good match - and she was good in The Five Year Engagement and Sicario, but there's nothing outstanding in her resume.

Still, she gets fucked by John Krasinki on demand.

R15 Negga was the outlier there. Huppert didn’t get nominated for SAG but that’s it. She was pretty much a shoe in, and most likely 2nd place behind Emma, even though she should have won.
Huppert was nominated (and won) the GG, BAFTA and even Critics Choice but she missed SAG because I believe some rules or some shit.

Wasn't the book set in Britain? I heard the setting change didn't work for the story.

The first time I watched this movie I missed the first 10 minutes or so and thought the Luke Evans character was closeted and the one killed his wife.
Later I watched the initial parts again and plot became more obvious. I read the book later and it was OK as something to kill time with on a long flight to Seoul. The middle-class setting in England seemed more authentic for the character than the more affluent NY suburbs the movie was set in.

The story was weak regardless

The character felt like she wouldn’t live in NY. She felt more Middle America transplant who was out of place.
Luke Evans role was small and he was terrible in his scenes

You're all a bunch of morons. Emily Blunt is a fantastic actress, extremely talented and likable. She's had huge hits with Edge of Tomorrow, A Quiet Place and Mary Poppins which shows what kind of range she has. And she gave very strong performances in Sicario and Looper. If you're going to trash someone's performances, nitwits, it would help if you actually looked at all her performances. She's one of the best actresses of her generation.

Edge of Tomorrow wasn’t a commercial success. It was a critical one though.
And Mary Poppins flopped.

That's true. It's also true she hasn't achieved a string of outstanding performances, or appeared in prestige projects unlike many of her peers.
She's of a similar age to Natalie Portman, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anne Hathaway, Kirsten Dunst, Elizabeth Moss, Rebecca Hall, Lupita N'yongo, Tessa Thompson, Felicity Jones, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Scarlett Johansson, Claire Foy, Amanda Seyfried, Keira Knightley, Anna Kendrick, Carey Mulligan, Rooney Mara.

I saw this movie and I remember almost nothing about it. That's not a good sign.
Surprised at all the Blunt hate. I think she's quite a good actress.
Though it is fair and accurate to say she hasn't lived up to her early promise. She's been in a lot of forgettable, middle of the road stuff. I would like to see her in more comedies.

I thought the book was good. It was interesting to read from the perspective of someone that couldn’t trust their own memories. But film can’t translate that POV very well and changing the setting from England to NY didn’t work.

One of the most boring "thrillers" I've ever seen. I didn't think Blunt was bad at all. I wouldn't blame the cast at all. The script is what stunk and Tate Taylor is an uneven director at best. If you really want to see him fuck up something, watch Breaking News in Yuma County where he assembles one of the best casts of all time and manages to embarrass every single one of them. Even if it hadn't been released during COVID, it would have gone straight to streaming and died a quick death.

The Girl On The Train is not an anti-man film in the slightest. But it is terrible. All these mid actors ACTing their hearts out - Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux - all for some LifeTime plot. I kept expecting Vivica A. Fox to show up.

I read the book in a book club I used to be in. It was okay. I watched the movie at home with a couple of friends who were also in the book club, and we all agreed that the movie was shit and if we hadn’t read the book we wouldn’t have been able to follow the movie. It didn’t help that so many of the characters had similar looks. Maybe it also didn’t help that we were drinking while watching it. Anyway, I don’t remember anything now about the movie or the book, other than the lead character smuggling canned G&Ts everywhere.
