The Gays and Tennis Part 75: bienvenue à Roland Garros!

last thread just paywalled. It's time for RG. Qualification draws should be out in a couple days

developments from the end of the last thread:

-learned Tim Mayotte is 1 of the few white male American tennis players who's actually a liberal (he's a former player)

-Coco Gauff wins her second singles title with a 6-1 6-3 beatdown of Qiang Wang

-Ruud wins his second singles title with a 7-6(6) 6-4 victory over Shapovalov

-Belgrade final will be impressive newcomer Badosa vs. Konjuh

-Lyon final will be Tsitsipas vs. Norrie

very surprising that Norrie double breadsticked Khachanov who really is in quite the slump

Tsitsipas def. Musetti 4-6 6-3 6-0

by Anonymousreply 1May 22, 2021 7:49 PM

next week's draws are out

shockingly Djokovic is playing in Belgrade again! I know Serbia is his home country and his family either runs or sponsors the tournament but he played in the first one a couple weeks ago and he'll have no rest for RG! He's the top contender after Nadal so this is quite a risky move. Now he could win Belgrade 2 without dropping a set given the weaker field. Basilashvili seems to be the biggest possible danger there

The men's Parma draw features Sonego as top dog with a second round match of either Korda or Seppi. Musetti could be his QF opponent. Paire, Simon and Gasquet are in the flaky French quarter.

Strasbourg finally marks the return of Andreescu who's allowed to play again after she got covid last month. Unseeded Venus has taken another WC and drew Cirstea. Pegula and Putintseva are also seeds.

by Anonymousreply 2May 22, 2021 7:54 PM

Coco also won the doubles today.

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2021 10:27 PM

Norrie The Nice Guy. I find Titsy draining.

by Anonymousreply 7May 22, 2021 10:30 PM

Either, as long as I get to be in the showers with the two of them after the match, r6

Definitely Norrie team.

by Anonymousreply 9May 22, 2021 10:30 PM

Yes, Norrie all the way. Tsitsi is too much of a Diva.

by Anonymousreply 10May 22, 2021 10:45 PM

I’m behind Tsitsy all the way.

by Anonymousreply 11May 22, 2021 11:33 PM

Badosa wins her first singles title in Belgrade over Konjuh who retired in the second set.

by Anonymousreply 12May 22, 2021 11:39 PM

Weird of Noldemort to play the week before a slam.

A lot of eye candy on the courts right now... Cobolli and Giron in Parma, Topo and Coria in Belgrade. All very pretty (and clean shaven and fit, both of which I approve haha)

by Anonymousreply 17May 23, 2021 4:11 PM

Giron could crack walnuts between those thighs

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 18May 23, 2021 4:45 PM

Quite pretty Cobolli takes the second set tiebreak away from Cabbage Patch Giron.

Among the ATP top 500 the Italians are dominating the teen rankings with four among the top 500: Sinner, Musetti, Zeppieri and Cobolli.

by Anonymousreply 19May 23, 2021 4:52 PM

The italian federation put a lot of effort and now it's paying the prize.

And they even got some bonus, because nobody was expecting Berrettini

by Anonymousreply 20May 23, 2021 7:55 PM

Apparently Shapovalov has withdrawn from Roland Garros because he hurt his hip in Geneva

by Anonymousreply 21May 23, 2021 9:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 28May 23, 2021 10:57 PM

Well Popsicle's absence will certainly diminish the average dick size in the men's draw.

by Anonymousreply 29May 23, 2021 11:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 30May 24, 2021 12:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 39May 24, 2021 6:18 AM

Giron in five letters is definitely not a spanish name. Suarez-Ferrero-Busta-Agut-Carreno-Navarro-Bautista is more like it.

by Anonymousreply 40May 24, 2021 11:09 AM

Looks like Giron is Italian, from ghiro (dormouse, which could mean someone who likes sleeping or working at night). Cute!

by Anonymousreply 41May 24, 2021 11:35 AM

Fils is a very good junior, but he is not Carlos Alcaraz. His results on itfs were pretty bad this year.

A lot of potential but he is not remotely close of breaking into a pro player, so pretty bad loss for Tomic

by Anonymousreply 54May 24, 2021 7:40 PM

As a Venus fan I hope she retires this year. I mean she's losing to basically everyone, even players she used to flat out own like Cirstea. Maybe she'll do better on grass and the summer hardcourts but I fully expect a first round RG loss. To be fair there are easier players in the Strasbourg draw she could have gotten instead of Cirstea but Cirstea is not the toughest eitiher.

Andreescu finally makes her return and had an easy win over a challenger-level player.

In Belgrade, Verdasco gets his first win of the year over Pouille 7-5 6-2

Surprising loss for top qualification draw seed Ivashka today

I see Urszula Radwanska (younger sister of Agnieszka) is making a comeback but she lost today too

The entertaining Dulgheru is also on the comeback trail and got a win

Zvonareva's comeback continues and she won easily

Errani also wins

Robredo just lost in straights

What's going on in the RG men's qualies is a lot more interesting than anything in Parma or Belgrade.

Tomorrow we get McDonald vs. Kokkinakis, Mmoh, both Cerundolo brothers, Jay Clarke and Alcaraz all fighting to make it into the 2nd Q round.

I watched the Venus match, and she needs to retire yesterday. Is she happy with that performance? This is the first round of a 250 and she cannot even move. What is she trying to prove? Time to let it go. It was sad to watch. She does not need the money. I don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 62May 24, 2021 10:14 PM

Is it possible the bitch has no idea what else to do with herself? What happened to fashion design?

I guess no one cares about '11' when Venus is ranked 1011.

by Anonymousreply 63May 24, 2021 10:17 PM

Granny Vee has been quoted as saying something like she won't get married because she can't see herself living with a man all the time.

I've never heard a religious hetero woman say this. What's the deal with her? Closeted lez like Pampers Shriver? Asexual? Unrequited incestuous love for Serena? Sex freak who scares men away?

by Anonymousreply 66May 24, 2021 10:52 PM

She could do better! Even if she has chunked up.

by Anonymousreply 71May 24, 2021 11:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 72May 24, 2021 11:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 73May 24, 2021 11:51 PM

Why can’t Venus take a more active role in her highly successful interior design business to the stars, V Star Interiors? Serena was certainly promoting V Star’s renovation of her ugly ass home last year around the Australian open.

by Anonymousreply 74May 25, 2021 12:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 80May 25, 2021 7:38 PM

Is Sam Querrey still playing? If not, Opelka is the ugliest man on tour. Venus can do a whole lot better.

by Anonymousreply 81May 25, 2021 8:37 PM

disappointing loss for Mmoh today. I don't quite understand him. He certainly looks the part of a top player as he's 6'1 and has a great physique. He moves well. The biggest problem I keep seeing is that he chooses to play more of a passive game. He has the ability to hit hard serves and go for his groundstrokes but too often he'd rather wait for an error from his opponent. After losing the second set tiebreak today he went down a break in the third set and never recovered.

Novak Djokovic does not need to worry about accidentally hitting a U.S. Open line judge with a tennis ball between points this year because there won't be any line judges — chair umpires will be the only on-court officials at that Grand Slam tournament’s matches.

The U.S. Tennis Association and the sport's two leading professional tours, the ATP and WTA, announced Monday that Hawk-Eye Live electronic line-calling will be used for all competition courts at the U.S. Open in 2021 and at seven of the nine US Open Series events preceding it.

A year ago, the USTA relied on the automatic system and dispensed with line judges at the U.S. Open except for matches at the two main courts in Flushing Meadows, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium.

During a fourth-round match at Ashe against Pablo Carreño Busta last September, Djokovic was defaulted from the U.S. Open for inadvertently hitting a line judge in the throat with a ball after dropping a game.

HOWARD FENDRICH Mon, May 24, 2021, 1:44 PM

- ADVERTISEMENT -

It was a shocking and abrupt stop to the No. 1-ranked Djokovic’s 29-match winning streak and his bid to add to his Grand Slam title collection.

After losing a game to trail 6-5 in the first set, Djokovic angrily swatted a ball behind him with his racket — and it went directly at the line judge.

Tournament referee Soeren Friemel ruled the match — and Djokovic's participation in the 2020 U.S. Open — would end there, saying at the time: “We all agree that he didn’t do it on purpose, but the facts are still that he hit the line umpire and the line umpire was clearly hurt.”

The Australian Open, which Djokovic won in February for his 18th major championship, did not have any line judges on any courts.

Not surprisingly, Djokovic said he approved.

“I actually am in favor of technology. I think it’s proven to be very accurate in this particular instance,” he said at Melbourne Park when asked about ending the use of line judges. “I don’t see a reason why we need the line umpires, to be honest, if we have technology like this.”

The US Open Series tournaments that will rely entirely on electronic line-calling this year are the events in Atlanta; Washington; Toronto; Montreal; Cincinnati; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Cleveland.

The Cincinnati tournament was held at Flushing Meadows last year right before the U.S. Open as part of a doubleheader of sorts organized because of the coronavirus pandemic and so was played under the same setup.

The USTA said Monday that “upwards of 314,000 calls” were made by Hawk-Eye Live during the two events.

The U.S. Open's main draw begins Aug. 30.

by Anonymousreply 109May 27, 2021 1:15 AM

She doesn't want to have to give an interview when she inevitably loses at Roland Garros. I wonder if she'll go back to giving them for the hard court season ;)

by Anonymousreply 110May 27, 2021 1:24 AM

She's so gullible. All the media hyping up mental health so PR Companies can make coin off their 'spokesperson' D-List celebrity clients, and she falls for it. 'Oh, I see, if everyone else is having such a terrible time (some yes, but most ,no) then I'm going to showboat my virtue-signalling by not giving interviews because 'triggering', because 'mental health'. She'll be an icon to the most embarrassing generation , the under 25 set. Boo-fucking-hoo.

by Anonymousreply 114May 27, 2021 2:02 AM

In general I like Osaka but I think the mental health excuse to avoid press is weak. There are some things that just go with a job. Most people can't avoid the things they dislike about their jobs. The press can be annoying and often are just looking to instigate an outburst from athletes for a flashy headline but on the other hand, sports superstars are coddled beyond belief in today's age. Sometimes the press do give them a dose of reality. If you play like shit, why can't you analyze it in public? If you do or say something jerkish, you should be made to answer for it.

Hey everyone. Yeah, like, um, I hope you’re all, like, um, doing well and, yeah, I’m writing this to say, um, like, you know I’m not going to do, um, any press during like Roland Garros. Like, um, you know, I’ve often felt that, like, people have no, um, regard for athlete’s, yeah, mental health and this, um, like, you know, rings very true whenever I, um, see a press conference or, like, partake in one. Yeah. Like we’re often, um, sat there and, you know, asked questions that we’ve, um, been, like you know, asked multiple times, um, before or asked questions, like, that bring doubt into our, um, minds and, like, I’m just not going to, um, like, subject myself to people that, you know, doubt me. Like, um, I’ve watched many clips of, you know, athletes breaking down after a loss in the, you know, press room and like I know you have as, um, well. I believe that, um, whole situation is like kicking a person while they’re down you know and um I don’t understand the um reasoning behind, you know, it. Jamie Murray deserves to have a splintered wood racket shoved up his entitled ass. This overpaid cunt wants to whine about prize money in the middle of a global pandemic and while people are losing their jobs, their family or even their lives?

The entire Murray clan deserves to have an enraged Serena shoving a box of fucking balls down their fucking throats.

I'm inclined to let you stew in your own nasty vitriolic juices, since that is obviously your preferred element.

But Andy Murray is on record saying pro-athletes (including tennis players) are ridiculously overpaid.

R125 To be fair this time Rafa has a tough draw at least from 4th on

Nole's draw is very easy unless Berrettini really up his level

But the one who had the best luck was Tsitsipas

by Anonymousreply 127May 27, 2021 7:22 PM

I'm thrilled Nadal and Djokovic are in the same half. I just wish Rublev and Zverev could have switched places. Unfortunately Zverev has a real shot at making the final being in the bottom half

I'm annoyed that there were so many pullouts as it allowed Isner and Opelka to get the last 2 seeds.

The women's draw looks quite fun.

Overall I'm excited for RG

on paper toughest round matches:

Barty vs. Pera

Jabeur vs. Putintseva

Brady vs. Sevastova

Pliskova vs. Vekic but Vekic is just coming back to the tour so probably not

Venus vs. Alexandrova

Kenin vs. Ostapenko real chance at an upset here give the form of both

Muguruza vs. Kostyuk

Martic vs. Giorgi

Azarenka vs. Kuznetsova

Kudermetova vs. Anisimova

Bencic vs. Podoroska

Vondrousova vs. Kanepi

De Minaur vs. Travaglia

Nishioka vs. Tsonga

Goffin vs. Musetti real chance for upset

Sonego vs. Harris

Sinner vs. Herbert

Monfils vs. Ramos-Vinolas

Verdasco vs. Kohlschreiber

Basilashvili vs. Lajovic

Rublev vs. Struff

Djere vs. Moutet

Evans vs. Kecmanovic

Fucsovics vs. Simon

Tsitsipas vs. Chardy who's in better form this year

Isner vs. Querrey

Tiafoe vs. Johnson

Dimitrov vs. Giron could be an upset

Medvedev vs. Bublik could be an upset

by Anonymousreply 128May 27, 2021 7:33 PM

Who is better: lucky loser, wild card or qualifier?

by Anonymousreply 129May 27, 2021 8:03 PM

R129 Better?

They are different thing, a wild card is a player that is invited to the draw, someone who doesn't have enough ranking but the organization want in the draw (generally local players, up and coming players or veterans with low ranking).

A qualifier is someone who won all the matching on the qualifying.

And a Lucky loser is someone who lose in the last round of the qualifying but got into the draw becasue someone on the main draw withdraw

by Anonymousreply 130May 27, 2021 8:08 PM

Even my 'heart condition ' excuse was more believable than this Naomi Osaka 's recent fiasco

by Anonymousreply 131May 28, 2021 2:47 AM

I use to think that Jamie Murray was a tolerable person but it seems he is as toxic as Judy.Andy.and Kim Sears

by Anonymousreply 132May 28, 2021 3:05 AM

Notable RG withdrawals

WTA- Halep

ATP-Wawrinka, Murray, Shapovalov, Kyrgios, Coric

by Anonymousreply 133May 28, 2021 4:04 AM

Anything that makes it a tougher road for Nadal is fine with me. He's got a tough road, and this time his competition won't be completely gassed like last fall at RG. Still, Nadal is the huge favorite.

R137 He is not even totally out so we will never know. And most of the players who were rumoured to be gay are married with women which doesn't mean a thing Paul Vahaly is now married with a man but he had a girlfriend the little time he was on the circuit.

And given some fan reaction when Musetti said he doesn't have time to girlfriends is obvious that some of the fanbase won't react well to a coming out, but i don't think it's a majority

Why are so many fans of men's tennis such homophobes? Are they overcompensating for douchebag fans of team sports looking down on tennis as a sissy, elitist sport?

by Anonymousreply 140May 29, 2021 12:13 PM

He only says something pretty common in athletes that they are focused on their careers and not on dating.

I remember Carlos Gimeno Valero and Carlos Alcaraz skipping the questions about their dating life too.

To be honest, i think a promising player who happens to be gay probably will be forced to fake a relationship (it's not that difficult given they are travelling all the time).

People come out younger right now, so probably in a near future there'll be at least a player who doesn't want to come back to the closet, but tennis has a conservative enviroment

R140 It's very easy to know who they are because they are the ones who said they never watch women's tennis.

Anyway tennis is one of the sports with more gay fans

by Anonymousreply 141May 29, 2021 12:17 PM

[quote] Anyway tennis is one of the sports with more gay fans

Why is it that so many gay people seem to like tennis, R141?

by Anonymousreply 142May 29, 2021 12:43 PM

Rafa is gay, no?

by Anonymousreply 143May 29, 2021 12:46 PM

I think gays prefer individual sports (there's a sexist and homophobic culture around team sports that really is difficult to overcome even if some of them made real progress in recent times, unfortunately not on the most popular pro sports) and tennis is probably the most popular individual sport.

There are other characteristics like the drama some matches have and the fact that epic surprises are more common than in other sports (since the big 3 that's not that usual on atp),

R143 Rafa is weird, but he seems a nice guy

by Anonymousreply 144May 29, 2021 12:48 PM

R143, I don't want Rafa, the juvenile mental midget with OCD and the intelligence of a 11-year-old. I would love to have Uncle Toni on our team though. He's a sexy daddy.

by Anonymousreply 145May 29, 2021 12:53 PM

why on earth is federer even PLAYING RG?... what's the point?

he should right now strictly be practicing on grass for the next month.... play any and all grass tournaments minor or not, that's it......

by Anonymousreply 146May 29, 2021 12:55 PM

Gramps Fed has as good a shot at winning Garros as Granny Vee does on the women's side.

Is Chrissy's lez crush Genie Bouchard in the draw?

by Anonymousreply 147May 29, 2021 12:59 PM

Haha. Back in April Thiem told Austrian newspaper Der Standard: "There are guys for whom life in the bubble is probably an advantage, for example Dan Evans or Alexander Bublik. They have problems focusing on sport in normal times. It's great for them - they concentrate exclusively on tennis, there is nothing else."

Kind of suggesting that Dan, he of the cocaine suspension, is a party boy. Dan has just responded:

"According to him, I must be out a lot, partying a lot. I'm doing all right outside of the bubble too. I'm sure it was meant in the nicest way possible, but I would say Dominic Thiem has done pretty well in the bubble himself, as he won his first Grand Slam in a bubble."

by Anonymousreply 148May 29, 2021 1:00 PM

Dan Evans is British. All players from there are required to be nasty, toxic cunts. I ought know. Ginny Wade was fondly called Vagina Wade by the other gals in the locker room for her cuntiness and Jo Konta's name practically screams it. And don't get me started on that loser I was married to for five minutes, the one who would watch lesbian porn and then insist that I call him Martina when we were in bed.

Is Dan Evans what the Brits used to call a chav?

by Anonymousreply 149May 29, 2021 1:07 PM

Evans is a nasty shit, r148. Throwing shade comes naturally to him. Remember the racist shade he threw Bedene’s way when Bedene was playing under the UK flag and Evans was asked about no longer being UK no. 1 as Bedene had just overtaken him? The gist of what he said was “You just listen to the way I speak and the way he speaks, and you tell me who the British number one is.”

A nasty, toxic cunt, just as r149 says.

by Anonymousreply 150May 29, 2021 1:12 PM

R146 He needs matches, he barely played anything, so playing in Paris makes sense if he wants to play a good Wimbledon

R149 He had a recent beef with Musetti. Lorenzo unlike other youngsters like Sinner and Alcaraz, doesn't seem to have a problem with speak his mind and said Evans is a really annoying player on court

by Anonymousreply 151May 29, 2021 1:15 PM

Hmm. I agree with Evans on this 💯. Domi needs to stfu about the bubble. He only won his GS because of it and it’s fucked with his mind.

by Anonymousreply 152May 29, 2021 2:01 PM

R151... federer needs matches on clay and playing the one major on clay and most likely losing early and hurting his reputation and career because he needs match play, with what 1, 2, 3, 4 wins at most on clay, when by now, his only chances and concentration should be on grass and major hard courts, the u.s. open?...

no, federer should be practicing right now on grass, just play the grass tournaments leading up to wimbledon to get his match play and increase his chance at the best chance he has at winning any major now that being the big W...

same thing Venus should be doing, although i think her chances by now are literally NIL anywhere, to win ANY tournament..

by Anonymousreply 153May 29, 2021 2:09 PM

Venus just likes playing. Fed needs match play.

by Anonymousreply 154May 29, 2021 2:19 PM

Going to be tough being a Rafa fan at this RG, but I'm there for him.

by Anonymousreply 155May 29, 2021 2:48 PM

R153 Practicing on grass is pointless. He has no competition rhythm, that's why he is playing in Roland Garros

by Anonymousreply 156May 29, 2021 3:01 PM

Same r155. Same.

by Anonymousreply 157May 29, 2021 4:11 PM

Not a Rafa fan either but I would like him to win also R155

by Anonymousreply 158May 29, 2021 4:57 PM

R156... wouldn't he get "competition rhythm" by playing the grass warm up tournaments for wimbledon that are coming shortly.. playing on his best surface and his best chance to win another major? sorry i agree to disagree with you that it is pointless for a all time great to play on clay, and lose early, by now (like venus long ago) he should be worried about his reputation...

Gramps is going to retire a broken, bitter and angry man. For the last 8 years he seemed to feel secure but also smug about his legacy and the 🐐 status conferred by the media because of holding the Slam record.

He knows that PEDal will overtake him in two weeks' time and that his own days of winning Wimbledon or the USA Open are over. I'm sure he never expected that he would lose his record while he was still playing and would never get it back. He probably has nightmares about his Novaxxx losses at Wimbledon and USA Open and the DelPo loss some eleven years ago.

Pretty homoerotic description of Tsitsy by the commentator just now. 6'4" "Adonis..."

by Anonymousreply 240May 30, 2021 8:20 PM

they're going to use cliches. Since Tsitsipas is half Greek and plays for Greece they'll call him Adonis which is a bit of an exaggeration. He's fit not ripped

if Zverev ever wins a slam (hopefully not but likely will) you know the headlines will be "Alexander The Great"

I first noticed Badosa in Charleston. She has real game and backed it up by winning Belgrade

by Anonymousreply 244May 30, 2021 8:27 PM

very interesting they're making Nadal wait to play until Tuesday when Djokovic plays. Clearly they are making sure Djokovic has enough time to rest and recover from playing Belgrade last week.

Not that he'll go far in this tournament but Federer who is also in their half is playing Monday

by Anonymousreply 245May 30, 2021 8:30 PM

And Tsitsipas face a break point to lose the first set.

And people don't understand why the big 3 keep winning GS

Well, at least he saved it.

She did manage a brief on-court interview immediately afterwards, during which she answered a few anodyne questions. 'I'd say it is a work-in-progress,' she said of her clay-court game. 'Hopefully the more I play, the better I get. If I play more matches, then hopefully I will get better.'

However, she did not then attend a press conference. We wait to see if the growing pressure on her will lead to a change of mind when she plays her second-round match on Wednesday.

It is not just the game's authorities who appear to have little sympathy with her but other players as well, who accept that interviews are part of the whole ecosystem of the pro game.

Double Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova reflected this weekend on having to talk about being stabbed in late 2016 by an intruder in her apartment, all in her second language.

'I really didn't get it,' she said, about Osaka's stance. Of the experience of fielding questions about her trauma, she added: 'It was very difficult, to be honest. On the other hand, I was kind of proud afterwards that I had done it.

'I thought it would be probably just once to talk about it, but of course I did it many times afterwards. With time it's much better.'

No, no R262. I need Daddy TsiTsi all grey and weathered.

In that pic, he's just another attractive 30 year old. Nothing interesting in that.

Osaka is a drama queen. I love her game, but she is. I don't even get the point she's trying to prove with the presser thing. She's more interested in her brand as social justice freedom fighter than actual social justice freedom fighting.

by Anonymousreply 263May 30, 2021 11:12 PM

Something about Djere makes me want to blow him.

by Anonymousreply 264May 30, 2021 11:18 PM

Osaka was mildly interesting at the start of her career but she seems to have morphed into a tiresome, attention whore, drama queen now. If she doesn't want the obligations that come with being the highest paid female athlete in the world, she could give up all the money and be an amateur. You won't catch her doing that though. She wants the money and the fame but not the responsibilities that go with it.

by Anonymousreply 265May 30, 2021 11:19 PM

She has to abide by the same rules as everyone else. It's her choice: play and do interviews, or don't play.

by Anonymousreply 266May 30, 2021 11:23 PM

I have a hard time owning my lust for Papa Titsy, because my mind inevitably goes there and that feels wrong.

by Anonymousreply 268May 30, 2021 11:27 PM

but there is a punishment for not attending the press conference- 20,000. so there is rule that you can only not coming once?? i dont get it. if one doesn want to come , her problem, make a punishment bigger like 100, 000, but threating someone by banning from other slams it is pathetic...so what the punishment is for?

by Anonymousreply 269May 30, 2021 11:28 PM

R268 what's wrong with lusting over papa Titsy?

Rosalyn, whatevs

by Anonymousreply 271May 30, 2021 11:31 PM

yeah I don't think the slams should ban Osaka but just keep fining her and increasing with each absence.

I agree with a lot of other statements Osaka has made in the last couple years but this no press thing is absurd. There are mental challenges to most jobs. She chose to become a professional athlete. The public enjoys the athlete-press banter

by Anonymousreply 272May 30, 2021 11:35 PM

I agree R272. She was great last summer/fall.

But this is a major misstep. She comes across terribly amateurish and dumb, frankly.

I hope she walks this back.

Osaka is a great player. I can understand fining her for refusing to give interviews. But barring her from playing is pointlessly destructive for the sport. And remember, Zverev was making fun of her over this. If you’re on Zverev’s side, you are probably in the wrong side.

by Anonymousreply 279May 31, 2021 2:08 AM

I agree, I think she's spoiled and think she's above it all and if you criticize her, you're a racist.

by Anonymousreply 280May 31, 2021 2:09 AM

Speaking to media is part of the job, if you can't handle that, then please stay home and get the mental help you need. you're obviously not well enough to participate.

Nobody is bigger than the game!

by Anonymousreply 281May 31, 2021 5:35 AM

I think there should be an ATP and WTA ongoing poll of the tennis audience to vote on who not to interview.

by Anonymousreply 282May 31, 2021 5:44 AM

For those who are saying she should just be fined and not disqualified, do you think a measly fine of $20,000 or even $100,000 is going to make any difference to someone who earns $50M a year? She won $4M just for winning the US Open alone. Twenty grand is nothing to players at that level.

Hitting them where it hurts is the only thing that will make a difference: prevent them from playing the biggest tournaments in the world, the ones their endorsement income depends on.

by Anonymousreply 283May 31, 2021 7:21 AM

Yes, and taking a hard line against her now is a good way to nip this in the bud otherwise other top players will start skipping interviews whenever they feel like it. It's the smart move to make.

It was also smart to get all of the slams on board because I'm sure that the French know that Naomi doesn't care about clay but would care if she was kicked out from playing the hard court slams.

I'm pretty sure that top players have been banned from competing at slams before but it didn't dent the popularity of the slam, so she isn't bigger than the sport.

by Anonymousreply 284May 31, 2021 8:00 AM

Is Osaka also taking a break from her social media for the good of her "mental health" or is it only the tennis media that aggravates her "mental health"?

by Anonymousreply 285May 31, 2021 8:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 286May 31, 2021 8:22 AM

R290 = Judy Murray, still clinging to the Brit media delusion that her lover/son was part of the Big Four.

by Anonymousreply 293May 31, 2021 8:51 AM

Why force players to do interviews? There's nothing enjoyable about watching a player's monosyllabic responses and obligatory responses when it's clear the player would rather be anywhere else. If a player enjoys the interaction and wants to create a rapport with the media, then it's good all around. But forcing someone to writhe in the spotlight is sadistic. A tennis player's job is to play the best tennis possible. Period.

by Anonymousreply 294May 31, 2021 9:15 AM

R294, when they signed up, it's in the fine print. It's part of the job! Now can you imagine the outrage if the reporters wrote something about the players and they then claim "that's so unfair, they never asked my opinion, that's not what happened etc etc etc"

You can't have your cake and eat it too. It's life. you gotta take the good with the bad. These young kids are so fucking mentally fragile and weak and just can't stop complaining...

by Anonymousreply 297May 31, 2021 10:23 AM

Ellen Degeneress has come out in support of Osaka. On this issue.Ellen is saying mental health of players should be taken into consideration

by Anonymousreply 298May 31, 2021 10:26 AM

Understood, R295, that it's part of their job. What I don't understand is why it's part of their job. The media can be vultures exploiting the cult of personality. They can also be supportive and can bring a lot of interesting information to the table. But I've always thought that that it should be up to the player whether to join the media to celebrate a win, mourn a loss, support a cause, or clear up some controversy. But then I'm a tennis purist and have always thought it should be about the sport, not the marketing, the ratings, or the creation of a brand.

by Anonymousreply 299May 31, 2021 10:27 AM

R295, how DARE you? Naomi is a stunning and brave Black woman who is standing up against the white male establishment and fighting for social justice by REFUSING to conform to capitalist, patriarchal norms. The press are just a bunch of angry white men butthurt that a strong Black woman is courageously standing up to their tyranny and saying "No more!"

by Anonymousreply 300May 31, 2021 10:29 AM

Players who should always wear sleeveless:

Nadal, Coric, RBA, Fucsovics, Garin, Tiafoe, Verdasco, Mmoh, Andujar, Monteiro, Cuevas

by Anonymousreply 301May 31, 2021 10:34 AM

So if the reporters don't ask them anything, then you know they will complain and say they are being silenced, they aren't being heard, they are being marginalized etc etc etc.

You can't answer a few questions about your game? What's the big deal? It's not like they are being questioned about rocket science, complex math questions etc...

The poor girl really needs to see a sports psychologist.

by Anonymousreply 302May 31, 2021 10:37 AM

[quote] But then I'm a tennis purist and have always thought it should be about the sport, not the marketing, the ratings, or the creation of a brand.

Fair enough. So will she hand back the tens of millions she has made from the marketing and the brand and her endorsements?

That'd be nice. Not holding my breath though.

by Anonymousreply 304May 31, 2021 10:50 AM

She shouldn't play this year. take a break. she's obviously not well.

by Anonymousreply 305May 31, 2021 11:07 AM

Both Andreescu and Osaka are so talented but both play so little. I wonder what's up with that.

by Anonymousreply 306May 31, 2021 11:35 AM

It's part of their job, R299, because it's what pays their salaries. No media coverage = no public interest = no big money showed on the game.

by Anonymousreply 313May 31, 2021 2:12 PM

This is a PR blunder that her agt/mgr should have helped her avoid. Isn't she known for being cheap? She probably never felt the need to pay a PR person before, she needs Rafa's or Roger's guy to handle it, they have the media 100 percent controlled.

Did you see the 60 min interview where Jon Worthless didn't ask any questions to Rafa that were not pre-approved? The real "tell" was when Jon HAD TO SAY about Whatshercara "she avoids the spotlight". That's why we can't ask her any questions and they aren't sitting on the couch like every other married couple and she rarely shows up to events. That's why Rafa usually brings his mother (who he talks to 5 times a day).

No tennis wife is in the spotlight why even mention it? It was a condition of the interview. Has ANY reporter ever asked Rafa about his tics? EVER? No, it would be their last press conference and no perks for you!

Speaking of mental health, let's talk about OCD, Rafa, what does that mean to you.

I haven’t been a fan of Osaka but I love that she’s taken this stance. She’ll obviously cave eventually but she’s made her point. There are reporters who are active assholes during those press conferences who seem to delight in asking cruel questions. I don’t think the sport is hurt one bit from them not being able to get into fights with the players.

PS- Not every situation is about race, wokeness or SJW whatever. If you feel the need to bring it up when it isn’t relevant at all, it probably means you’re a piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 315May 31, 2021 2:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 328May 31, 2021 5:03 PM

Poorly handled by Osaka. She could've just monosyllable-d her way through and been totally boring. Answer every question with "Sure, I guess." whether it's relevant or not.

The slams can mandate whatever they want, and they chose to go hardline. I've no complaints, really, but if they'd wanted to go less hardcore, they could've mandated an exponential fine (say, tripling with each offence) that started where it does but quickly increases to millions.

Honestly, though, if Serena can't pull this, you'd think Osaka would realize that she's not at that demand-level.

by Anonymousreply 329May 31, 2021 5:27 PM

^Officially or not that was a 100 PR piece. JW knows where he gets his paycheck and how to get a seat at the big boys table. Why didn't 60 min have a REAL journalist interview him? Think about it. Not even a hint of a hard question about anything.

OK so Whatshercara "avoids the spotlight". Why not say "Whatshercara avoids the spotlight but she's actually Rafa's sister's best friend. They do everything together." There are literally hundreds of pictures of them together. I guess Rafa's sister hates the spotlight too so let's not even mention her.

All Rafa family questions/answers begin and end with "Uncle Tony". Period. Everything else is so private for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 330May 31, 2021 5:30 PM

Sports stories about non-controversial figures are not about ripping into them, as much as you might despise the subject.

by Anonymousreply 331May 31, 2021 5:44 PM

Ok. Wtf does Rafa or his wife have to do with Naomi acting like a petulant child? Did you want the 60 minutes thing to be a hit piece?

Osaka is not the only player that hates those interviews - she’s not special or specifically targeted in those. She needs to move on.

by Anonymousreply 332May 31, 2021 5:45 PM

tldr- Rafa's a closet case, Osaka should answer the questions and cash the checks.

^The fuck is has to do with is public relations and the dance that every star has with the media.

Did you hear his Rafa's response at the press conf. when asked about Osaka, something like "I respect her...we need the media without the media we would not have any fans or support", totally prepared.

Rafa has a masterful team around him that protects him from any hint of criticism. If Osaka had a PR person they would have/and still might stop this from getting out of hand. She would have been coached to give the right answers . Reporters want a story, a PR team would give it to them. Osaka's sister wouldn't be on twitter adding to the problem. They would treat "mental illness" with the same gravitas as any other physical injury they'd get Drs to back up the story and give background to the media. She's made a misstep into a scandal.

Why did Rafa go on 60min? Rafa's a closet case which is always annoying. If you're going to go on 60min you should have to answer a FEW honest questions or at least say ONE new thing. What was the point of the interview if he's so fucking private? Why show the wife if she's so shy? Here she is but you can't ask her anything. Let's talk about Uncle Tony.

by Anonymousreply 333May 31, 2021 6:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 334May 31, 2021 6:29 PM

Those post-match interviews are worthless when the players are suffering through them, saying the absolute minimum to get the hell out of there. It makes the media and the ATP/WTA/ITF look bad for rubbing salt in the wound, and it adds nothing positive to the narrative. Nor does it add to "public interest" or tennis "big money" to see a player scowl/skulk/go through the motions. That's ridiculous to say those painful monotone/monosyllable interviews increase interest in the sport when they probably do just the opposite.

by Anonymousreply 335May 31, 2021 6:32 PM

I would never want that bitch Ellen Degeneres taking my side.

The post-match press is part of the job. These people earn more for winning a Grand Slam match than most people will earn in a year. Suck it up for 20 minutes and answer some goddamn questions, or IDK, quit and get a job at a factory. Serena, Federer, Rafa, etc have always shown up and haven't always been in a good mood.

Osaka is nothing but a spoiled drama queen. She can default her way right out of the WTA.

by Anonymousreply 342May 31, 2021 7:08 PM

Just because some rando gays long for Rafa to be one of us doesn’t mean an interviewer should be pressing him re: his sexuality. That might be relevant in the case of a closeted politician who votes against gay rights.

Some people have a bizarre view of journalism.

by Anonymousreply 345May 31, 2021 7:19 PM

That bottom section is wide open. I would like Badosa to get through. Shes had a great clay season this year and is pretty.

by Anonymousreply 346May 31, 2021 7:22 PM

Some people have had enough of “journalists”, r345. If I just wanted the score and “I won the important points”, I’d just google the results. Can you imagine being asked for the three hundredth time by Ubaldo Scanagatta (I just picked a rando journo’s name) “But your backhand today was no so good, no?”?

by Anonymousreply 347May 31, 2021 7:26 PM

I personally enjoy the post match press conferences. I like Osaka in general and think this was a misstep for her. I hope since she cited mental health that she is getting some help from a professional. She should stay off social media and not read what the press has to say about her. Her idol Serena said she stopped reading about herself in her early 20s and it helped a lot. I understand being a top player in your sport and the highest paid attracts lots of attention so you have to find ways to handle that

I do think a lot of the posts in here are quite absurd though bashing her as if she's some evil witch. Osaka from what I've read is a nice person and is having trouble adjusting to all the attention. Hopefully she can sort it out sooner rather than later

by Anonymousreply 348May 31, 2021 7:32 PM

How great it would be if we all could avoid the bad parts of our job and just claim the benefits !!

Some players actually like to do interviews after they win, sure nobody likes to lose and you gotta face FACTS, you can't avoid it, you won't grow it you just pretend it didn't happen. You can use the criticism to see how you can improve your game.

She is like the little kid hiding under the blankets and pretending the shit isn't happening. You're an adult, time to face the harsh aspects of life and deal with it.

Garbiñe Moo-girtha is a mess out there today. Lost the first set 1-6 to some teen from Ukraine, then feigned a back injury to explain her poor performance. Seemed to have righted the ship early in the second, but now it’s tied.

by Anonymousreply 351May 31, 2021 7:44 PM

I'd love to see a press conference with input from the media that actually improved the player's game. That's rich. A player knows what needs to be improved and can sort that out with coaches, etc.

A few of these journalists seem to love nothing more than to antagonize the players in order to sell more newspapers/add clickbait. A player can be mentally tough on court to win matches, but sparring with the antagonists in the press room takes a different sort of arsenal. It's unfortunate that it's come to that.

Kostyuk has been a hyped player for a few years but has had some injuries. I had a feeling she'd give Muguruza a tough match

by Anonymousreply 359May 31, 2021 8:11 PM

R359 shes "good" on all the surfaces but clay doesnt let her dictate like she can on hard courts. Also she doesn't move as well. She wasnt gonna win this tournament if she hadn't withdrawn.

Once you become a professional athlete, you decide to play by certain rules of the game,' he said.

Billie Jean King tweeted on Sunday that she was 'torn' over the issue too.

'I fully admire and respect what Naomi is doing with her platform, so I am a little torn as I try to learn from both sides of the situation.

'While it's important that everyone has the right to speak their truth, I have always believed that as professional athletes we have a responsibility to make ourselves available to the media.

'In our day, without the press, nobody would have known who we are or what we thought. There is no question they helped build and grow our sport to what it is today.'

'I acknowledge things are very different now with social media and everyone having an immediate ability to speak their truth.

'The media still play an important role in telling our story. There is no question that the media needs to respect certain boundaries.

'But at the end of the day, it is important that we respect each other and we are in this together.'

King, 77, is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won 39 Grand Slams throughout her career.

Fox Sports Radio host Rob Parker said the French Open should have told Osaka not to show up for the tournament if she could not face answering questions.

Rafael Nadal made similar comments in the pre-tournament press day.

'I respect her, of course, as an athlete and her personality. I respect her decision. I don’t know. I mean, we as sports people, I mean, we need to be ready to accept the questions and to try to produce an answer, no?

'I understand her, but on the other hand, for me, I mean, without the press, without the people who normally travel, who are writing the news and achievements that we are having around the world, we probably will not be the athletes that we are today.

'We [wouldn’t] have the recognition that we have around the world, and we will not be that popular, no?'

World Number 1 Ashley Barty said: 'We know what we sign up for as professional tennis players. I can’t really comment on what Naomi is feeling or her decisions she makes.

'At times press conferences are hard, of course, but it’s also not something that bothers me. I’ve never had problems answering questions or being completely honest with you guys. It’s not something that’s ever fazed me too much.'

Naomi's sister, Mari, has back-tracked on a Reddit post after critics said it sounded as though Naomi was using the subject of mental health as leverage to get journalists to stop asking her tough questions.

She had tried to explain her sister's decision by saying she was upset that whenever she takes part in press conferences, she is reminded that her clay record isn't strong.

by Anonymousreply 364May 31, 2021 8:25 PM

R343 But answering questions is not only part of her job and it's promoting the sport what pays her. Without coverage there's no interest in the sport.

And about Rafa, i think it's absurd asking a guy about his private life when it's obvious he doens't want to talk about it. His relationship can be unconventional (frankly i find absurd when the girlfriends of teenagers travel with them around the world when they are dating for a couple of months) but it's his life and nobody's business. If he was a known homophobe it would be different but that's not the case

by Anonymousreply 365May 31, 2021 8:26 PM

R346 Badosa has some mental health issues too. She was hyped when she won junior RG, she was the next Muguruza and it's pretty obvious she has potential but she was unable to deliver.

She retired in a lot of matches.

Now she seems way better and more comfortable with the situation. She broke with her boyfriend (who is a famous spanish tv host, well know for being Federer's biggest fan) but that didn't affect her (maybe because they seem to be friends, he was supporting her when she played in Madrid).

For a while it seemed she was going to play for the USA (because she was born in New York) but in the end she continued to play for Spain like she always did

by Anonymousreply 366May 31, 2021 8:34 PM

Oy! Serena’s outfit. Those booty shorts - It’s like two pigs fightin’ under a blanket...

A really tight blanket.

by Anonymousreply 367May 31, 2021 8:34 PM

I just can't get over one of the top-ranked players withdrawing from a Grand Slam because she doesn't want to do a handful of 10-minute press conferences. She is either reached peak spoiled snowflake status and/or she's full cracking up and having a breakdown.

by Anonymousreply 368May 31, 2021 8:37 PM

now why can't any of the hottest and best built guys wear bootie shorts like serena???!!..

by Anonymousreply 369May 31, 2021 8:37 PM

I like Serena's outfit. Very fun.

by Anonymousreply 370May 31, 2021 8:44 PM

Osaka and her team are fully aware of what the rules are. She says she doesn't want to cause a distraction when that's all she's done. The decision to withdraw has made it even more of an issue, plus it makes her look like a spoiled brat.

by Anonymousreply 371May 31, 2021 8:45 PM

Osaka did pull out of the tournament for an injury. She said a week before the FO began that she was having a bit of a mental health issue. She never said she didn't want to do any press, simply that she didn't want to do the post match press conference, which in her eyes never added an new information for the fans since everything she could have been asked up to that point would have already been covered in the pre- post- match on court interviews yet served as a massive source of anxiety since the post-match pressroom interview almost always forced her to focus on her shortcomings and mistakes.

One may suggest that an athlete should have tougher skin or whatever, but fuck that. The post match pressroom interview has never enhanced anyone's enjoyment of a sporting event. And it has damn sure certainly never enhanced the athletic quality of the event either (anyone else remember when Nadal was forced to sit in the pressroom visibly cramping and eventually collapsing to the floor underneath the table of microphones simply because he "had" to be there to say, "Yes, I'm glad I didn't lose and it was really hot"?). Osaka did an interview a practice session earlier in the day. She did a the interview on the court before the match. She did another interview after the match. The press has plenty of material. The only reason the FO (and the other slams did this) was for a pointless power grab. And in doing so they knocked the single biggest draw on the women's tour by a huge margin out of the tournament without even speaking to her.

by Anonymousreply 378May 31, 2021 9:05 PM

I like the acid green on Serena, though I think she should lose the fabric that's pretending to be a skirt. To me she looks better going for a pure athletic look than when she tries to go "fashion."

by Anonymousreply 379May 31, 2021 9:15 PM

How is this Osaka drama viewed in Japan? She was almost guaranteed to be the flag-bearer in the Tokyo Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 380May 31, 2021 9:18 PM

R368, I think she's cracking up

R378, Patrick McEnroe said the federation reached out to her but she didn't even respond, that's why they put out that statement.

by Anonymousreply 381May 31, 2021 9:18 PM

Nishioka def. Tsonga in a 4th set tiebreak

Serena toughs out the first set against Begu. Begu has always been a scrappy player but no real weapons.

by Anonymousreply 382May 31, 2021 9:21 PM

"The post match pressroom interview has never enhanced anyone's enjoyment of a sporting event. "

Of course post match interviews matter greatly. This is when you can see who the person is versus the athlete on the court. That's how I discovered how hilarious and sweet Serena Williams could be, on the opposite how cold and boring Justine Hénin is, etc. That's how fans really get to know and love the players.

by Anonymousreply 387May 31, 2021 9:31 PM

R383 Most of athletes are faking their behaviour in press conference, you are naive if you believe it

by Anonymousreply 388May 31, 2021 9:32 PM

Davenport mentioned a few minutes ago about being part of the same generation as Capriati. She said Capriati clearly had mental health issues and everyone could see when things unraveled but no one did anything about it.

This has gotten much less coverage but Stephens has talked about mental health as well which is why she became more closed off in the last several years.

by Anonymousreply 389May 31, 2021 9:33 PM

Naomi said she has long bouts of depression ever since winning us open 2018! She is an introvert and public speaking is nerve wracking to her.

Remember what happened!? It's all Serena's fault! She was crying at the throphy ceremony, if my memory serves...

by Anonymousreply 390May 31, 2021 9:49 PM

The problem is she handled this incredibly bad.

She could talk with the tournament, but instead of that she made the announcement and she didn't answered when RG officials tried to talk to her.

And they handled this in quite soft manner at first because it's Osaka (if it was a lesse player the reaction would be very different) but when she didn't even answered them the tune changed.

She is shy and doesn't like the spotlight, but then she is all over social media and decided to withdrawn over the George Floyd murder.

She needs a psycologist and a good PR team

I wonder if she's under any pressure from Nike to make all kinds of social statements. If you're shy and fear public speaking, then why take all these stances? Of course, she has every right to but it increases her anxiety as she will be asked even more questions.

I remember Tim Duncan, NBA player, shy and quiet guy, refused most endorsements and avoided the limelight.

by Anonymousreply 397May 31, 2021 10:03 PM

Read her sister's reddit post. She didn't want to be reminided that she's bad on clay, period.

by Anonymousreply 398May 31, 2021 10:05 PM

Yes, I think many are faking and putting up a facade in interviews coz you got to act a certain way to attract sponsors and for branding purposes.

But you do see that they can be funny, or an asshole, sometimes they can't fake how ugly they are on the inside.

by Anonymousreply 399May 31, 2021 10:10 PM

Yeah there have been repeated references to how she didn't want to be asked tough questions after a loss. She has sounded like an entitled, spoilt brat, snowflake by refusing to engage with the FFT. People like her want to use the press when it is convenient and useful for them to do so. The fact that she is whining not about intrusive paparazzi but about some silly post-match press conference shows what a drama queen she is.

In an Instagram statement, Osaka wrote: 'I've often felt that people have no regard for athletes mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one. We're often sat there and asked questions that we've been asked multiple times before or asked questions that bring doubt into our minds and I'm just not going to subject myself to people that doubt me. I've watched many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in the press room and I know you have as well. I believe that whole situation is kicking a person while they're down and I don't understand the reasoning behind it. Me not doing press is nothing personal to the tournament and a couple of journalists have interviewed me since I was young so I have a friendly relationship with most of them. However, if the organizations think that they can just keep saying, 'do press or you're gonna be fined', and continue to ignore the mental health of the athletes that are the centerpiece of their cooperation than I just gotta laugh.'

I read this orgy of narcissistic twaddle several times with mounting fury.

One thing's very clear: this has got nothing to do with mental health.

What Osaka really means is that she doesn't want to face the media if she hasn't played well, because the beastly journalists might actually dare to criticize her performance, and she's not going to 'subject' herself to 'people that doubt me.'

And the problem with the French Open is that it takes place on clay, her statistically weakest surface, so she probably won't win it, and when she loses, she'll be asked why she isn't as good on clay.

In other words, she has no problem with the media lauding her undeniable brilliance with a tennis racket, right to the point they say anything negative, however reasonably and fact-based, because then they're damaging her mental health.

This is straight out of the Meghan and Harry playbook of wanting to have the world's largest cake and eating it, by exploiting the media for ruthlessly commercial self-promotion but using mental health to silence any media criticism.

And I'm sorry (not really…) if this offends any of the delicate little snowflakes out there who believe all this self-serving garbage, but Osaka's antics stink of a stupendous ego raging out control.

by Anonymousreply 402May 31, 2021 10:21 PM

The journalists she is lambasting earn a tiny fraction of what she earns, yet nobody can point to anything that's ever happened in a Naomi Osaka press conference which could be remotely construed as unfair, rude or potentially damaging to her mental health.

In fact, the tennis media are generally regarded as one of the most professional and respectful groups of journalists in world sport.

So, for them now all to be tarred with the brush of uncaring incompetents just because they won't suck up to Ms Osaka in the unctuous non-critical way she expects, is disgraceful.

Commendably, and ironically, many other top tennis stars have criticized her stance.

'Without the press,' said Rafael Nadal, 'without the people who normally travel, who are writing the news and achievements that we are having around the world, probably we will not be the athletes that we are today. We (aren't) going to have the recognition that we have around the world, and we will not be that popular, no?'

He was backed by Billie-Jean King who said: 'I have always believed that as professional athletes we have a responsibility to make ourselves available to the media. In our day, without the press, nobody would have known who we are or what we thought. They helped build and grow our sport into what it is today.'

Exactly.

It's the largely exultant and celebratory media coverage that's made Naomi Osaka a fabulously rich superstar - and allowed her to be a high-profile social issue activist too, using the media to promote her support for organisations like Black Lives Matter.

But rather than feel grateful, she now wants to control how the media speaks about her like some kind of dictator.

Some tennis legends were far harsher in their critique of Osaka's conduct.

'Why should she be treated any differently to the other players?' Mats Wilander, the former world No 1, told Eurosport. 'She definitely has to do press. We are all struggling with mental issues these days during the pandemic, but Naomi, I think you need to reconsider or, I would say, don't play in the tournament until you are ready to face the job.'

The top-ranked woman player, Ash Barty, suggested Osaka take herself a tad less seriously: 'Press is part of the job. We know what we sign up for as professional tennis players. At times, press conferences are hard, of course, but it's also not something that bothers me. ... For me, personally, it doesn't keep me up at night what I say and hear or what you guys ask me. So, I try and make it a little bit lighter and have a bit of fun with you guys.'

Daniil Medvedev, the No. 2-ranked man in tennis, even said that press scrutiny can help his mental health – finding it cathartic after a loss.

'I try always to come to a press conference,' he said, 'bad mood or good mood. And I feel like, even sometimes in the bad mood, I can be in a better mood after talking to you guys.'

This Osaka nonsense sadly epitomises the state of the woke-ravaged world today.

We're seeing mental health being used more and more as an excuse for deplorable behaviour.

by Anonymousreply 403May 31, 2021 10:22 PM

R403, perhaps you need to take care of your own mental health. You seem far more undone about this than Naomi does. She took a stance. The French Open took a stance. She decided to withdraw and she doesn’t seem upset about it. It’s not “deplorable behavior”. She hasn’t hurt anyone at all.

If her 'mental health' is suffering, then she should put down her racket for whatever length of time it takes for her health to recover, just like any other illness.

Step away form the tour and look after your health in private, in the same way so many decent players have done before you.

Its all a full on sham. I suspect her sponsors are telling her to stop interviews in the lead-up to Tokyo to avoid the inevitable questions about the Tokyo Olympics and the raging Japanese covid.

by Anonymousreply 413June 1, 2021 1:11 AM

The wokes will dismiss BJ King as a clueless, old woman who doesn't understand the impact that playing on the tour and making over 50M a year can shatter someone's mental health. I've yet to see any evidence of the press being horrible to Osaka and her whining comes across as nothing more than "Everyone is so mean to me. Why are they asking me questions after I lost a match? I want to be back in my hotel room Instagramming or Tweeting, not doing press."

by Anonymousreply 417June 1, 2021 7:59 AM

If only all “journalists” were smart enough to reflected on what their job is:

[quote] The real problem here, it strikes me, is not Osaka or even the impressive self-importance of the written media. Rather, it’s the press conference itself, which when you think about it is quite a weird idea, and one that essentially fails at its central function. The great conceit of the press conference is that it is basically a direct line from the athlete to the public at large, that we humble scribes are but the people’s faithful eyes and ears in the land of the gods.

[quote]In case you hadn’t noticed, this hasn’t really been true for a while. Athletes now have their own direct line to the public, and spoiler: it’s not us.

Only chance Serena has of winning another major is Osaka and other top players step asiide so she can win. Serena is 5 years to late trying to beat Margaret Court's record. Margaret got her record when she was 34 and mother of three, 40 year old Serena will never beat Court's record.

Is Morataglou part of the problem? I know she’s older but she rarely brings anywhere near her best tennis watching her yesterday gifting her opponent with unforced error after unforced error, I have to wonder.

Yes, R419.

CSN was for many years a DL fave, renowned as much for her delicate feminine beauty as much as her powerful masculine game. It's good to see her healthy and back on the court!

Apparently this is CSN’s final Roland Garros.

The WTA official response is funny. They say all the 'right' things they were expected to say but the last part is about how players have media obligations they are expected to fulfill. Their statement essentially reads like "Yeah we support you, Naomi, but get off your high horse and do your interviews."

Why is the Guardian journalist a "loon", r420? And why do you lump him in with the "SJW journalists" (whoever they are). I saw no "SJW-ism" in his article.

I get the distinct feeling you're one of those "war against wokeness" rightwing trolls, and you're probably on board with Piers Morgan's take on the Osaka affair ("shut up you privileged woman and get out there and hit some balls for us!").

by Anonymousreply 426June 1, 2021 1:03 PM

There is nothing wrong with being against wokeness. Nothing at all

by Anonymousreply 427June 1, 2021 1:33 PM

And wokeness has nothing to do with what she said. Or you say it is because she is black so everything she is against is "woke", lol fuck off to LSA

Boris Becker---I heard her first response a couple of days ago about this media boycott and that is something to be always taken seriously, especially from such a young woman,' Becker told Eurosport.

'She couldn't cope with the pressures of facing the media after she loses a match, but that happens frequently and you have to deal with it.

'I always believed the media was part of the job. Without the media, there is no prize money, no contracts, you don't get half the cake. I hated the media and I didn't like talking to journalists, but you had to do it.

'Now she is pulling out of the tournament altogether because she can't cope with it and that raises much bigger questions for me.

'If she can't cope with the media in Paris, she can't cope with the media in Wimbledon or the US Open. So I almost feel like her career is in danger due to mental health issues.'

Barty through in a surprisingly tough first-round match.

...and FAA lost the first 2 sets against veteran Seppi

The problem with Felix is that he is a worse player right now than he was two years ago.

His attitude is not the same, he was eager to become a top player but right now he is lacking a fighting spirit.

He is able to play well in all surfaces so sooner or later he'll be on the right path again, unfortunately for him, younger players will be at his level and he is not at the level of the older nextgen yet

by Anonymousreply 432June 1, 2021 3:14 PM

Except, r427, “wokeness” is a catch-all rallying cry currently being used by the right to refer to anything that even remotely smells of progressivism. But you knew that.

by Anonymousreply 433June 1, 2021 3:16 PM

And Rublev is on the verge of elimination.

People complain about Rafa and Nole winning everything but the truth is the younger top players don't deliver when they have to

by Anonymousreply 434June 1, 2021 3:22 PM

Well, at least Felix is fighting. He was on the verge of losing but now he is 4-4 in the third so he still has a chance

by Anonymousreply 435June 1, 2021 3:24 PM

Kvitova has withdrawn as well

Jeff Bridges wrote a story in the NYPOST criticizing USTA for jumping the gun before knowing the facts.

The draw is opening up for Serena. Her potential R16 opponent Kvitova has also pulled out of RG now. Serena could reach the final and tie Court with a surprise win here.

by Anonymousreply 438June 1, 2021 4:23 PM

Ironic that Kvitova hurt herself during her "post-match press requirements".

by Anonymousreply 439June 1, 2021 4:29 PM

R419 and R423, why use “CSN”? For the newbies on our Gays and Tennis one should use her full name of Carlo Suarez Navarro.

Like, yeah, um, haha.
