Who was the most beautiful actress of all time?
by Anonymous | reply 516 | January 10, 2022 5:40 PM |
Lucille Ball wasn't even the most beautiful actress of *her* time.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 22, 2021 6:52 PM |
Definitely Michelle Pfeiffer. Ironically she HATES her beauty ever being brought up.
Current challenger: Margot Robbie. Liz Taylor was gorgeous for a hot minute but she faded FAST.

How did Lucy make the list?

Viv

I was watching a (young) Vivien Leigh movie just the other day; she had the most perfect face I've ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 22, 2021 6:58 PM |
Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, and Gene Tierney should be on the list
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 22, 2021 6:59 PM |
Halle Berry is on the list.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 22, 2021 7:00 PM |
Much like Donald Trump is a poor man’s idea of wealth, Elizabeth Taylor is a poor man’s idea of beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 22, 2021 7:01 PM |
Who made this list, Jen Aniston? How is Angelina Jolie not on the list? She is the most beautiful actress of all time hands down.
And, some of those old hollywood actresses should be replaced by actresses like CZJ, Charlize and Sharon Stone.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 22, 2021 7:03 PM |
Olivia Newton-John
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 22, 2021 7:06 PM |
Michelle Pfeiffer. Without a doubt. Look at her...perfect facial ration. She's beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 22, 2021 7:06 PM |
^^ratio, not ration. thanks, autocorrect.

r14 she's pretty. i don't think she's beautiful though.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 22, 2021 7:13 PM |
Where’s Queen of Hollywood, much loved by DL and 5 time holder of People’s most beautiful title, Julia Roberts?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 22, 2021 7:14 PM |
A couple of years ago, I got into a discussion with some straight male co-workers about who was the most beautiful modern actress (they don't know about Leigh, Lamarr, and Liz). Most of the discussion consisted of people suggesting names, and hearing "Well she's great, but she's not really BEAUTIFUL" in response.
The universally acclaimed winner of the discussion was Salma Hayak, everyone present agreed that she's not just beautiful, she's REALLY BEAUTIFUL.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 22, 2021 7:15 PM |
There are also minor actresses who were/are also stunning. Was just thinking about this a few night ago while rewatching Goodfellas. Elizabeth Whitcraft, the actress who plays Tommy’s date at the Copa (she embarrassed him by praising Sammy Davis Jr’s personality) was absolutely exquisite.
She retired from acting and does hair styling in Hollywood for film and tv.

[quote]discussion with some straight male co-workers about who was the most beautiful modern actress (they don't know about Leigh, Lamarr, and Liz)
Really? None of them had a clue about who Elizabeth Taylor is?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 22, 2021 7:22 PM |
Rita Hayworth, Charlize Theron, and Angelina Jolie need to options on the list. Pfieffer probably wins regardless, but (like Jolie) I feel like by having a nose job, she cheated.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 22, 2021 7:26 PM |
Taylor was beautiful, but not in "of all time" way, honestly. I would say Raquel Welch in her prime was more beautiful than Liz.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 22, 2021 7:27 PM |
Op, you idiot, Julia Roberts at least deserves to be in the poll. Where is she ? She was stunning when young.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 22, 2021 7:28 PM |
Catherine Deneuve
Julie Christie
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 22, 2021 7:30 PM |
Nope, r27...her ugliness of character is enough to count her out.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 22, 2021 7:31 PM |
As mentioned previously, Julia Roberts is too equestrian. It's like that old joke: Julia Roberts walks in to a bar. The bartender says, Hey Julia, why the long face?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 22, 2021 7:32 PM |
A very underrated beauty is Marpessa Dawn, star of Orfeo Negro. Much more beautiful than Dandridge, imho.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 22, 2021 7:34 PM |
Ava Gardner should be on the list. She was incredibly beautiful. Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, and Jessica Alba are the most beautiful of today's actresses.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 22, 2021 7:34 PM |
A genuinely impossible question to answer. There were so many it's impossible to choose just one. I would add Kiera Knightley to the list. (In her Pride and Prejudice days.)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 22, 2021 7:34 PM |
Queen Julia’s long face is a part of her beauty!
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 22, 2021 7:34 PM |
Grace Kelly, duh.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 22, 2021 7:34 PM |
r33 Keira is beautiful but I wished she never fucked with her nose. Way too thin for her face. She's still beautiful though.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 22, 2021 7:37 PM |
WTF is equestrian ? And who made you the arbitrer of which face shape is beautiful ?
At her peak, Julia Roberts was considered the most beautiful woman.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 22, 2021 7:39 PM |
r37 is for r30
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 22, 2021 7:40 PM |
Let's break this down into simple terms. Julia Roberts has a face like a horse.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 22, 2021 7:42 PM |
Julia has an okay face with a big set of teeth. She's not beautiful, she's striking and was used in most movies for a comedic device. She's not at all beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 22, 2021 7:43 PM |
Ava Gardner oir Gene Tierney would be my choice. I always thought Arlene Dahl was very beautiful, as well. The fame of modern actresses doesn't seem to be about beauty, very much. A lot of them look hard, to me.

Isabelle Adjani
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 22, 2021 7:47 PM |
r40 r39 Any one who says Julia Roberts isn't beautiful is a fucking misogynist intimidated by the power and influence she wielded when she was the face of Hollywood. You hate powerful women, admit it, you woman hating pig. By no definition she is not considered beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 22, 2021 7:47 PM |
Ingrid Bergman, Alida Valli, and Hedy Lamarr, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 22, 2021 7:48 PM |
^ Um, yeah, no, Julia is definitely NOT beautiful. It has nothing to do with the alleged power she wielded. She just belongs under a saddle.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 22, 2021 7:48 PM |
Why not Marilyn Monroe. If we are talking IN makeup and lighting, and while acting. She was rather mesmerizing.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 22, 2021 7:50 PM |
I don't understand how anyone can think Vivien Leigh wasn't beautiful. She was the greatest beauty of the first half of the twentieth century.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 22, 2021 8:03 PM |
r45 It has everything to do with her popularity and influence. You think powerful women cannot be considered attractive. It's probably stemming from your internalized misogyny. To say that she is not the most beautiful ever is one thing but to call her plain ugly ?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 22, 2021 8:04 PM |
Hedy Lamarr by a country mile. Not only was she gorgeous, she was a self-taught scientist and is the Mother of WiFi. Single White Female ruined the name Hedy (Hedwig). However I bet it comes back in style within the next 10 years.
But brilliance and incredible personal history aside, Rita Hayworth and Gene Tierney deserve to be on this list!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 22, 2021 8:04 PM |
Diahann Carroll, Raquel Welch, Jacqueline Bisset, Faye Dunaway, Sharon Tate,
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 22, 2021 8:06 PM |
Julia Roberts is just NOT very attractive. She's quite ordinary. Plus, she can't act to save her life and is by most accounts a really nasty person in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 22, 2021 8:06 PM |
I agree r48. I'm a huge fan of Liz, but Vivienne was more beautiful. Liz was very short and easily gained weight. Julia Roberts is fugly as hell. I watched Mystic Pizza the other night and was blown away that she had such a huge career. Angelina is the most beautiful living actress.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 22, 2021 8:08 PM |
Dame Joan Collins deserves this! 87 and still beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 22, 2021 8:10 PM |
Gene Tierney.
Dorothy Dandridge is a very interesting choice, she definitely was a star and a very beautiful woman. Love her in Carmen Jones.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 22, 2021 8:11 PM |
Julia Roberts is far below Keira Knightly. But still think Marilyn and Michelle are completely Hollywood beautiful.

r57: i've read about her sister committing suicide. Julia seemed to have no emotion when it came to her sister, she seemed to not give a fuck about her sibling. She seems like a deplorable, honestly. She didn't seem to try to help her at all. i could be wrong. besides that, she is not beautiful and apparently a shitty person to work with (i.e. don't look at me/don't talk to me type).
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 22, 2021 8:34 PM |
I think of Vivien Leigh as beautiful, or very pretty, or lovely. But not one of the most incredibly beautiful women of all time. Maybe because I think her face was a bit pinched, and she was very petite, and one of those actresses who are all head, on a tiny body. There were certainly models more beautiful than some of these actresses. Nancy Kwan was very lovely, btw. I think Hope Lange was beautiful.

I am white and nominated Diahann Carroll. She was a very pretty girl and a beautiful young natural young lady. Before she transformed into a glamorpuss, before the nose jobs and expert makeup, she was very pretty and also very friendly looking.

Julia should be on this list, definitely over someone like Jessica Lange or Salma Hayek, who are beat looking.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 22, 2021 11:06 PM |
It’s Angelina or Halle Berry. I’d also include Jennifer Connelly in her prime if we’re just talking about beauty here.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 22, 2021 11:07 PM |
No one who looks like a monster in old age like Lange. Jesus. Alcoholic, hateful, horror show bittie with no films since about 1995.

Tori Spelling

Purely on looks and nothing else, you can’t take seriously a list that doesn’t include peak Jolie, teenage-30s years. Even as a 15-16 year-old you could see what a real beauty she is in any era. Not a generic beauty but with interesting features.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | May 23, 2021 12:51 AM |
r96 truly beautiful. she was voted the most beautiful woman in the world at one time, if i recall correctly.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | May 23, 2021 1:58 AM |
Nancy Davis, Just kidding.
I was thinking about Jean Arthur earlier, too. She was very lovely. And in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, she was already almost 40. Another actress like that was Irene Dunne. Margaret Sullavan was very special and lovely, also. But not a great beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | May 23, 2021 2:44 AM |
Maureen Ohara was beautiful when she was young and soft. She worked up a hard look quickly. Like Joan Crawford, also very pretty when young.

Natassja Kinski, Dorothy Dandridge, and Carole Lombard. Isabelle Adjani and Catherine Deneuve are stunners too.
Michelle Pfeiffer looks like a malevolent rat. I understand that my opinion is in the minority given how widely praised she is for her looks.

Vivien Leigh, Greta Garbo, Hedy Lamarr, Gene Tierney and RIta Hayworth were all gorgeous as well. Liz Taylor's side mole was distracting a little.

by Anonymous | reply 122 | May 23, 2021 4:27 AM |
R119 well Sharon didn’t have to get a nose job to be considered beautiful so I guess all thinks being equal, she wins. Which brings me to my question - anti aging surgery /procedures aside, should we be counting women who had pre-fame plastic surgery? Especially nose jobs? Think of all the ordinary women out there whose looks would be elevated by well done rhinoplasty.

Mary Pickford.

What more do you judgmemtal people want? Even Betty Bacall told me I was beautiful. Study James Brolin says it to me fourteen times every day! Am an elder gay and still find Hedy Lamar, for a short while in the 40’s, on film more so than stills stops me in my tracks. R25 & R123: I can understand why some think plastic surgery is cheating. Braces & orthodontic work could be considered cheating as well.
I look at it this way: good plastic surgery enhances what you already have. It can't turn a homely person into a great beauty. Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, and Tori Spelling didn't have much to work with. So, the beautiful ones mentioned here who've had help from surgeons (Michelle, Angelina, Marilyn, Halle, Salma, Diahann Carroll) were pretty to begin with.

I think that we should draw a distinction bewteen actresses we like, and actresses who were/are objectively beautiful. We should also remember that it's possible to have delicate features without being beautiful at all - for example, both Angela Basset has very fine features, but her angular, manly jaw prevents her from being truly beautiful. The same could be applicable to a young Linda Evans.
People like Hedy Lamarr, Vivien Leigh, Jean Simmons, Jennifer Jones, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Tierney, Sophia Loren, Veronica Lake, Dorothy Dandridge, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, a young Brooke Shields, Vanessa Williams, Rinko Kikuchi, Jaclyn Smith, Faye Grant, Lupita Nyongo, Gong Li, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Newton-John, Marilyn Monroe and Salma Hayek, are all objectively beautiful regardless of their level of acting talent (and yes, I know that I am not including everyone).
On the other hand, there are actresses who are merely pretty (or in some cases, completely average) but their exceptional charisma and glamorous demeanour elevates them above the rest: Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, Meryl Streep, Joan Collins, Cher, Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, Jessica Lange, Clara Bow, Lena Olin, Cate Blanchett, Lucille Ball, Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine, and a long etcetera.
Finally, there are actresses who are a product of marketing and are not even pretty, but are aggressively promoted as being gorgeous, for some inexplicable reason: monkey-eyed and shark-mouthed Julia Roberts; Cameron Diaz and her hideous skin, potato nose and misshapen mouth; Jennifer Lopez and her utterly plain face and oddly proportioned body; human blank canvas Anne Hathaway; Millie Bobby Brown and her achondroplasia face; Farrah Fawcett and her witch nose, bulging eyes and abnormally large mouth, as well as an also very long etcetera.
Unfortunately, what we perceive as beautiful tends to be conditioned by other traits that we find appealing, or what we project of ourselves on others. That, however, doesn't have any bearing on the objectivity of what is beautiful and what isn't.

I was sold on Viv Leigh, and you've completely changed my mind, good arguing!
Angelina has a fat Czech face. She is stunning- amazing, shocking features. But her natural fat Czech face that she has to starve and chisel thin eliminates her for me.
I think it's Hedy Lamar. The blue eyed brunette always wins. And she might be the best.

Salma Hayek, something tells me without the accent and two enormous silicone filled bags that sit under her chin those straight guys wouldn't find her nearly as "beautiful". First time I saw her I thought she was trans. Very manly in the face.
Halle Berry, cute. But she never really grew out of her Himalayan whistle kid looks.
Rita Hayworth, horse teeth and bad taste in men.

Truly beautiful means you can see their uniquely gorgeous face without tons of makeup. A lot of these actresses named on the list are products of makeup, surgery, and good photographers. Drop-dead beautiful doesn’t mean symmetrical, generic features either or else Kate Beckinsale is at the top of list.
Young Angelina Jolie and Monica Bellucci for instance, even without much makeup they were turning heads. Hedy Lamarr without much makeup before Hollywood, was a great beauty but you can’t say the same with her contemporaries like Rita Hayworth and the like, who had extensive plucking and needed makeup to complete the illusion.

Maybe the OP should have stated who is the most beautiful between those on my list R204. The women on his list are attractive, but very few people live up to the standard of beautiful. I would imagine not very many people, including myself, could describe what beautiful is.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | May 26, 2021 2:40 PM |
Of the 10 listed my top 4 would be Michele Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor. In almost all cases, except Halle Berry who would qualify now, it was when they were acting in their mid-20s. As for the others I can think of many more beautiful such as Grace Kelly, Diana Rigg, Julie Andrews, Lee Remick, etc etc.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | May 26, 2021 2:55 PM |
R174 I was going to mention Yvonne De Carlo. She was hot, and a beauty, but I think her sultriness and sex-symbol-osity overshadowed her beauty. I wonder if that's another class of movie star - even though she was gorgeous. She sang well, too. This was a number that was cut from the movie, Sombrero (1953), because it was considered too suggestive. (This was another movie where Cyd Charisse, a beauty in her own right, had to compete with a more voluptuous creature. Like she had to do with Ava Gardner and Esther Williams in other movies.) Vittorio Gassman, who was married to Shelley Winters at the time, is the costar in this scene.
Jane Russell was a beautiful girl, too.

Half of it is also about the way these women were photographed. Additionally, all of these women are unusually photogenic - they don’t walk around all day just naturally looking like that when they’re scrubbing their sink or whatever. What we’re seeing is a manipulated image of them that has involved many artists (including the photographer).

"I watch her and think, “What possibly attracted her to being an ACTRESS?”
I suppose all her life people were telling her "Wow! You're beautiful enough to be a movie star or model!" With her looks what other path would she take? But if truth be told Sharon Tate was no actress. Nothing she ever did indicated she had any real talent as an actress. And the roles she got never even required much acting. She did do one thing very well, and that was to look beautiful. It's hard to imagine her being offered roles that required much more than that.
It's thought that if she had lived and had her baby she probably would have abandoned the acting career altogether. Her pregnancy made her "oblivious" to all else. I think that would have been her niche; to be a mother. If only Sharon Tate had no let herself get drawn into the Hollywood scene; she should have gone to college, gotten an education, met someone, married, had children. She should have had that kind of life. If she'd chosen that path, she'd be alive today.

^^ from that article:
[quote] It is this innate self-confidence that not only fueled Lange but caused many to regard her as "an Ice Queen." "There was a haughtiness about Jessica, even then," recalls a frequent visitor to the Lion's Head, the New York saloon where Lange waited tables in the early seventies. "She may have been a waitress, but she acted like she was above it all, that she was doing you a favor to drop your hamburger on the table."
I knew a gay couple who used to go there back in the day, and I excitedly asked if Lange ever waited on them. They said yes, and that she was awful at it.
They were bitching at her once about her shoddy service and she said, “I’m not a waitress, I’m an ACTRESS.” And one of them said, “Well, can you ACT like a waitress??”

Debbie Reynolds was cute, at most. She was from the era of screen beauties like Rhonda Fleming, Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, Deborah Kerr, etc.

Debbie was very pretty and seemed more attainable to the average person than some of those other goddesses or ice queens you mention.

Debbie Reynolds?? We are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, now.
She was attractive on her best day, but not a beauty.

She doesn't look really her best in "Singin' in the Rain". She looks quite lovely next year opposite Donald O'Connor in the underrated "I Love Melvin".

R308 plus she was 5 FEET TALL. Sorry but I think height and build count for something too. I do love her though, especially in her later years.

[quote]Millie Perkins was dreadful as Anne Frank. Not only was she model pretty, which was totally wrong for the role, she couldn't act for shit. And she was toll old. Anne aged from 13 to 15 during her time in the annex; Perkins looked at least 18. She looked like a young woman and spoke like a baby voiced little girl. She made Anne seem kind of retarded.
I'm convinced that at least part of the reason she was cast was her slight resemblance to a young Elizabeth Taylor, director George Stevens' muse in "A Place in the Sun" and "Giant". I agree, Perkins was dull as dishwater.

Jolie in her most beautiful years, circa 2008, when she was 32-33, not many actresses past or present could top her. She had a face that would’ve set gotten old Hollywood attention and star-making machine rolling. It’s not just a generic, pretty face but more beguiling in that you know with or without makeup that is a truly stunning face. With the right glamorous makeup she was in another stratosphere.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | May 30, 2021 11:50 PM |
Jolie has an exquisite face, but her body is tragic. Especially the booty. You could iron shirts on it.

Surprising that Marilyn Monroe has been little mentioned in this thread. She was considered the premier sex symbol of her day, a woman all men desired. But it was not a "natural" beauty that she had. It was very manufactured. It would take her two hours for her makeup man to do her face to get that "look" of hers.
Jean Harlow, not mentioned on this thread, was also considered the premier sex symbol of her day. Her "look" seems harsh now (that platinum hair, that dark eye makeup and lipstick) but back then she was considered a woman all men wanted, just like Monroe was. In photos she changes in appearance; sometimes she looks plain, sometimes very glamorous. But underneath all the makeup she was quite pretty and in a biography of her it was mentioned that people marveled at how an unprepossessing little man like Paul Bern could have ended up married to Harlow "the most gorgeous creature in Hollywood."

This thread is too long and I don’t like women enough to read through all of it, but has anyone said JOAN FONTAINE yet? My god, she has to be the most gorgeous woman Hitchcock ever directed. Even more so than Grace Kelly, who was obviously stunning in her own right.
I agree with Sharons Tate and Stone. I’d also add Ursula Andress and Kate Winslet if they haven’t been mentioned already.

[quote]r329 A Woman in Full - Angelina Jolie is more than an outstanding actress. She's the ultimate avatar of fantasies (hers and ours), whose next movie, Wanted, taps into her pent-up need for action. As Jolie examines the effect of her own childhood on the unconventional family she and Pitt have created, Rich Cohen hears about the mother she lost last year, the father she’s estranged from, and why, in her second pregnancy, she feels so sexy.
Irrespective of Angelina Jolie, who the hell writes this kind of drivel?? Is it supposed to make us being in awe? It's just so fucking ridiculous.

R345, Gwili was RKO's answer to Garbo and Dietrich, but she flopped as a lead actress, with one columnist dismissing her as a "stiff, colorless and completely talentless performer." She was then relegated to supporting roles, making her final film in 1942, before returning to her native Denmark.

R358, 1930s Joanie was the most glamorous movie star of her day, but it was all smoke and mirrors. Hair, makeup, lighting, costumes by Adrian, etc. made her radiate beauty and glamour, but take all those away and she was pretty, not drop dead beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | June 2, 2021 4:40 AM |
I don’t understand how Crawford’s face changed so much from her first bout of stardom in the 30s to her reinvention in the 40s. She looked totally different. I wouldn’t have guessed it was the same person.

1930s Joan looked like a lovely, fun-loving gal, but the 1940s version looked like she would cut your balls. I guess she was tired of all the shop girl roles and wanted to be taken seriously by going for a harder, tough broad look, like her bestie Barbara Stanwyck.

It comes down to "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Very few women or men are beautiful. Good looking, yes. Beauty has more to do with the "it" factor. Sharon Stone is a good example. A very attractive women, but not beautiful and yet a lot of men wanted to fuck her.

Most of the "most beautiful" faces here need make-up to be their iconic selves. No problem with that - some actresses are a blank canvas on which beauty is drawn. It's a skill or talent or quality of its own.
But I'm an ex-nature boy from the 60s and I think the face that "wins" should be a face that is beautiful on its own term... a lily without gilding. So I nominate Julie Christie (yes I know there is makeup in this pic)

R381: Uma got her good looks from her more beautiful mother, a '60s fashion model. Uma's daughter is a plain-looking version of Uma, but her voice is similar.
It's like Tippi Hedren > Melanie Griffith > Dakota Johnson. Diminishing returns in 3 generations, Hollywood version.

Coming late to the game, here. This list includes Lucille Ball but leaves out Garbo? You specified "the most beautiful actress of all time". Not just a pretty face or sexy. Taylor and Pfeiffer belong, and some of the others suggested by DLers, do as well. Here is a picture of Greta at 50 years with no make up. Judge for yourself. It's my own personal opinion. Some selections need rethinking.

R392 Of course she has make-up in that photo. Eyebrow, lashes, lipstick at least. Not the architectural make-up of the old studios, but still...
And yes, it does show, at 50, an incredibly beautiful face that has been lived in. Similarly, I 'd submit Jeanne Moreau whose face, far from classic, is a face with a view....

Millie Perkins was George Stevens' choice after Audrey Hepburn turned him down (The Diary Of Anne Frank). Audrey Hepburn was 30. I don't know what he was thinking. Perkind was also too old. I don't think her performance was bad but her age was. Anne Frank was an adolescent. In the stage version she was played by Susan Strasberg, who was, I think, 16.

Vanessa Williams (former Miss America)
by Anonymous | reply 407 | June 19, 2021 12:43 AM |
"I don't think her performance was bad but her age was."
Her performance was terrible. She made Anne seem like a retard. But I thought the whole play was terrible. If featured fictional scenes, like the one where Mr. Van Dann is caught stealing food (that did NOT happen). It portrayed "Albert Dussel (real name: Fritz Pfeffer)" as a doddering, rather senile old man but he was neither. Pfeffer was an athletic, attractive man , a dentist; he was definitely not dumb. His fiance was a 21 years younger woman who was devoted to him and he to her. He was the odd man out in the annex; all the others had family members with them, but he was alone. For some reason it was decided that he would share a room with Anne; terrible idea! He thought children should defer and be respectful to their elders; it wasn't easy for him to be in such close quarters with a rather spoiled, full of herself little girl. It was hard on her too; of course it would be, having to share a room with a man in his fifties. Anyway, the play really wasn't a good depiction of the characters in it, despite all the praise and awards that were heaped on it. The movie wasn't really good either, but it too of course won awards and praise. How could it not? How could a play and movie about Anne Frank NOT be praised and awarded?

A Hollywood producer or director made the astonishing claim that Elizabeth Taylor was NOT photogenic - that she was far more beautiful in person than she appeared in pics and on film/movie screen.

Can we please shut up about fatass LIZ TAYLOR??
Yes, she was lovely. Move on!

R452 "She photographed well". When did you meet her in person? The thread is about beautiful actresses. Of course she photographed well. This is her after her movie career was long over, at age 46. The next reply will be a picture of her that's a candid from the early 30's.

It's funny to watch a bunch of old queens arguing over which whiney old "karen" (and we know they were ALL karens back then) was the best looking! LOL None of them look as good as today's stars who take much better care of themselves. Aren't your little gay dicks shriveling just thinking about these broads?

R434 is Billy Bob Thornton

Did r456 meet her either? Shut up.

Saying Greta Garbo wasn't beautiful shows ignorance.

Saying Greta Garbo wasn’t beautiful shows someone with an opinion different than your own and you’re too childish to accept that.

R463 I hope you're being sarcastic and not suffering from a complete vision failure!
Greta Garbo was scrawny, frail, very pale and sickly looking, with itty bitty titties, no top lip, and a receding hairline. Beautiful? Nah. She definitely was nowhere near being the most beautiful actress of all time. I can think of 10 off the top of my head way more beautiful than her.
Hell, even over-hyped DL favorite Liz Taylor was a goddess compared to Garbo.

Sally Field.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | June 30, 2021 4:26 PM |
Not only that r466, she had thick wrists and ankles. And a wide body frame that looked bad in tight dresses.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | June 30, 2021 5:03 PM |
Oh, no! Thick wrists! I know the first thing I look at in an actress is her wrists. And then her ankles. And if she doesn't pass the wrist and ankle test, I never want to look at her face.
You don't have to like Garbo (and I don't give a shit) but her career as a silent film actress was based on the fact that she was a beauty and a sex symbol, and it continued into the sound era. Her beauty might not be your thing but she was considered the great beauty of her time, and is considered one of the immortal beauties of the screen. That's not disputable. What you personally think of her, you're welcome to think.

Garbo's face is (of course) amazing.
She makes all other women look merely pretty.
by Anonymous | reply 470 | July 1, 2021 6:16 AM |
Beauty is subjective. Not everyone has to think Garbo is beautiful.

by Anonymous | reply 474 | July 1, 2021 6:16 PM |
Hedy had a boring presence on film, which kind of undercuts her looks.

Madeleine Carroll was gorgeous. Another blonde, Virginia Bruce, was sometimes called the most beautiful actress, in those days.

The most beautiful ones tend to be brunettes.

I felt so bad for her the day after she presented at the Oscars not long ago and the next day everyone slammed her odd-looking plastic surgery. She hasn't left her home since.

Missing on the list: Madonna at the time of the "Justify my love" video. Not saying she's a great actress but this is about beauty. Monica Bellucci in her prime, Angelina Jolie and Anna Moffo, the opera singer (who also acted in mostly obscure movies). Anyway, she should count.

Madonna was never, at any time in her life, "beautiful." Sexy, maybe. But not beautiful.

The extreme lingering close up of Lee Remick in one of Roddy McDowell's home movies stands apart from anything I can remember. Even Grace Kelly's famous close-up in Rear Window falls short.
