Michelle Kwan's mother.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 19, 2021 11:36 PM |
She was not the first Asian superstar.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 19, 2021 11:37 PM |
I'm told that it's hard to tell how old most orientals are.

OP: I love the music of Richard Rodgers, so of course I love this number. Nancy Kwan is dubbed (all four of her), but she’s lovely, and the split screen effect is cute. I feel R&H deserve a lot of credit for bringing non-white characters into musicals in the 1940s, even if they used what are now considered stereotypes to present the characters and disregarded actors’ nationalities in casting. That said, Flower Drum Song probably can no longer be performed (unlike South Pacific), because the stereotypes are so strong, including in the music, particularly some of the orchestrations.

Don't show that video to the non-binaries. It's exclusionary.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 19, 2021 11:40 PM |
We certainly wouldn't want to cheapen the Asian culture R6.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 19, 2021 11:42 PM |
I always watch one of her movies during Kwanzaa.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 19, 2021 11:45 PM |
I can picture Miss Lindsey re-enacting that scene in front of his dressing table every night.

A measly 12 responses for Miss Kwan's birthday?! WTF?! Even friggin' Gale Storm got 200 posts on her birthday. Anti-Asian sentiment is real!

OP, her name is Michelle Kwan, you dumbass, and she's only forty.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 20, 2021 1:45 AM |
R21 you forgot "Bridge Over The River Kwan".
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 20, 2021 1:46 AM |
A star, certainly. But a superstar in the same sense as Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee? Not quite.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 20, 2021 1:56 AM |
She was a triumph in Kwan Kwan.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 20, 2021 2:00 AM |
Her son died of the AIDS.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 20, 2021 2:28 AM |
R27, her son looked very different from what I imagined. He was straight?

by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 20, 2021 4:36 PM |
She had major anger issues. They're detailed in the documentary The Wrath of Kwan.

Today is Asian night on TCM. Next up (I'm not making this up) "Yellowface: Asian Whitewashing and Racism in Hollywood".
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 20, 2022 4:08 AM |
Rejoice! The long-awaited Blu-ray of "Flower Drum Song" comes out on May 24.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 20, 2022 7:35 AM |
So sad to read that her son contracted aids from his wife, who got it from a blood transfusion.
Aside from that, I knew a drag queen who used I Enjoy Being a Girl as part of her act. Funny as hell.
I love my DL brothers. You all keep me laughing all the way to the end of this thread with your responses. This whole thread deserves a big W&W.

We knew a fabulous eldersister who, whenever she saw an Ornamental sister, would say "Anna May Wong"

Why would you think that it doesn't still exist? Do blacks have exclusive rights to racism claims? You don't know much about film history.
