Spanky and Our Gang

Were they just a poor man's Mamas and the Papas? Or underrated greats?

They were just O-Tay.

Spectacular harmonies.

That was enjoyable, thanks!

I took a singing class at city college and some guy sang "Lazy Day" in a Mike Ness style voice. It was horrible and every time I hear the song I cannot help but think of that guy's recital. There was even an old woman in the class (who sang terribly) winced when he sang.

Think time, R4.

As usual, my favorite song of theirs isn't their most well-known.

And Spanky replaced Cass Elliot when John Phillips re-formed the Mamas and the Papas in the 1980s.

I remember them as a kid. For some reason they were really popular here in Canada.

R6 Spanky and Cass Elliot had the same strong delivery. Beautiful deep voices, great range.

They were good. They had that "Sunshine Pop," that a lot of groups had back then. Everyone was, in a way, imitating someone else.

by Anonymousreply 9May 19, 2021 8:23 PM

That gives me that warm fuzzy childhood feeling of days gone bye

by Anonymousreply 10May 19, 2021 8:34 PM

They were always on the in-store playlist when grocery shopping with my mom in the early 80s.

They were better, just as the Friends of Distinction was better than the Fifth Dimension.

I liked Spanky And Our Gang's lead female singer - wonderful voice. They had 3 great songs: Sunday Will Never Be The Same; Lazy Day (my favourite) and Like To get To Know You.

Spanky, the female singer's real name was Elaine McFarlane.

Well, I thought you were talking about the Little Rascals.

If ever a group deserved the Milli-Vanillia treatment.

r12

Not even close. Marilyn McCoo was awesome.

Just heard “Sunday Will Never Be the Same” today after a long time — still holds up beautifully, and prompted me to check and see what DL thought!

I love both the Mamas and the Papas and Spanky and Our Gang. Both Cass Elliot and Elaine McFarlane were terrific singers!

by Anonymousreply 20August 28, 2021 9:22 PM

Well, they weren't no Seekers..
