The Katey Sagal Show Cancelled After Just 5 Episodes

Oops. 80s sitcom Mixed-ish also cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 93July 15, 2021 9:15 PM

More evidence of our cancel culture!

by Anonymousreply 1May 16, 2021 8:50 AM

It was no surprise Rebel was going to be canceled. They promoted the shit out of it but nobody watched. Plus Krista is a terrible showrunner. Feel bad for Katey though.

by Anonymousreply 2May 16, 2021 9:02 AM

Poor Katey Sagal.

Was “Sons of Anarchy” her last big hurrah?

by Anonymousreply 3May 16, 2021 9:02 AM

So everyone from Married... with Children is out of work besides guest starring roles? Christina’s Dead to Me is in its final season, Katey will be in it. Ed is out of a job, David, Amanda, et al, aren’t working either.

by Anonymousreply 4May 16, 2021 9:04 AM

Good!

by Anonymousreply 5May 16, 2021 9:04 AM

Not surprised at all about Rebel. It looked horrible. Unlikeable, cringe inducing main character.

by Anonymousreply 6May 16, 2021 9:05 AM

The problem with Rebel was there were too many characters. Her husband, ex-husband, another ex-husband. Andy Garcia -- was he an ex too? Then her daughter, then another daughter -- was she adopted? Garcia and Sagal were good but too many characters who were not interesting enough to care about.

by Anonymousreply 7May 16, 2021 9:22 AM

People don’t give a fuck about Katey Sagel. She was fine in Married with Children. More People’s Choice than Emmy worthy. She got a cushy long term job on a well-received animated show due to her FOX connections. But no one watched Futurama for Katey fucking Sagel. She had a high enough profile to get a wife role on the show that killed John Ritter which tanked in the ratings when the focus shifted to her. She got a role on a hit FX show...that her husband wrote.

Since then, she’s been banging around from project to project. No one cares, the characters never took off. She got a gig similar to 8 Simple Rules as Dan Connor’s girlfriend on The Roseannes where she’s an acceptable presence in a big ensemble.

She’s not a star you build a show around. Audiences aren’t like network executives. We can’t be smooth talked by connections and an influential husband.

She’ll be back on The Roseannes next season to an utterly disinterested reception.

by Anonymousreply 8May 16, 2021 9:39 AM

For Life entered a saturated market. The news has been talking non-stop about black men and their relation to the criminal Justice system for the past year.

The average American doesn’t want to hear about it when they’re watching TV while eating their dinner.

by Anonymousreply 9May 16, 2021 9:51 AM

I had never heard of any of these shows, network TV really is in a bad place now.

by Anonymousreply 10May 16, 2021 10:10 AM

I could tell from the promos that Rebel was destined to tank. Fact: people are put off by angry, opinionated, loud mouthed old women. It's a common theme in all cultures and throughout history to call them harridans, shrews, hags and witches. I think it's because no one wants to be reminded of their nagging mothers.

by Anonymousreply 11May 16, 2021 11:00 AM

R11 = Glenn

by Anonymousreply 12May 16, 2021 11:02 AM

Well, the good news is Rebel Wilson can release her eponymous show and it not get confusing!

by Anonymousreply 13May 16, 2021 11:03 AM

Mixed-ish was just far-left propaganda trying to condition Americans to intermarry between races even though most Americans of ANY race prefer their own kind. That is what the left doesn't understand.

by Anonymousreply 14May 16, 2021 11:24 AM

Mixed-ish? What an awkward name for a show.

by Anonymousreply 15May 16, 2021 11:38 AM

Have they made a Gayish yet, and if not, why not? There should also be a Transish (if we don’t consider Pose that already) and Dykeish (if we don’t consider The L Word that already too.) We can skip NonBinaryish though, and there is nothing to see at Asexualish.

by Anonymousreply 16May 16, 2021 11:41 AM

I want Trans-ish where the lead characters talk about their morning routine of shaving and dilating. They have trouble finding skirts that hides their 9 inch cock, head out on a night out to find a cis-man, the kind that bullied them in school, try to trick him into bed and call him trans phobic for not fucking them, the breakout star who is mtf loves to join in female sports and sexually assaults women in the ladies bathroom and they all end up overdosing at the end of every episode in a recurring joke because no one was paying attention to them.

by Anonymousreply 17May 16, 2021 11:49 AM

Like Jean Smart, I love Katey Segal and she's typically the best part of any show in which she appears.

However, unlike Jean Smart she tends to be relgated to mediocre stuff nobody wants to watch. Supposedly Sons of Anarchy was good, but I never saw it.

Mixed-ish was trash. The woman playing the mom is gorgeous, but I could barely make it through an episode.

by Anonymousreply 18May 16, 2021 11:50 AM

Has Christina Applegate commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 19May 16, 2021 11:55 AM

I watched Rebel and liked it.

by Anonymousreply 20May 16, 2021 11:58 AM

The promos for Rebel led me to believe she was some kind of Erin Brockovich grifter. Wasn't one of the tags "Big corporations fear me" 🙄

by Anonymousreply 21May 16, 2021 12:05 PM

Christina Applegate is busy trying to get anyone to care and cast her in a one season sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 22May 16, 2021 12:42 PM

Rebel just seemed to be a revamped version of Zoe Busiek: Wild Card.

by Anonymousreply 23May 16, 2021 2:18 PM

They really didn’t give Rebel a chance. I enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 24May 16, 2021 3:15 PM

Rebel Without A Chance

by Anonymousreply 25May 16, 2021 3:24 PM

R17 I'd watch.

by Anonymousreply 26May 16, 2021 3:29 PM

She needs to be on SVU as Oleebia's half sister.

by Anonymousreply 27May 16, 2021 3:42 PM

Rebel might have been better on HBO... with lots of dick.

by Anonymousreply 28May 16, 2021 3:43 PM

Ed O’Neill is so rich from modern family and married with children he doesn’t need to work. Katey Sagan reminds me of Megan Mullaly—one long running sitcom role and then years of trying to make people care about her and her husband.

by Anonymousreply 29May 16, 2021 3:44 PM

I want her to stay as the new Roseanne Conner.

by Anonymousreply 30May 16, 2021 3:46 PM

[quote]I had never heard of any of these shows, network TV really is in a bad place now.

Nobody I know watches network tv shows except my older relatives.

by Anonymousreply 31May 16, 2021 3:46 PM

I'm surprised the Katey Sagal Show got cancelled, as it is getting higher ratings than the SVU Chris Meloni spin-off

by Anonymousreply 32May 16, 2021 3:48 PM

I watched Mixed-ish a few times & there were a few laugh-out-loud moments for me. But I lost interest as soon as the show started to insert conversations with language/terms used today that were not being used during the show's timeframe. The characters are funny, the actors (even the kids) are appealing, but they just couldn't be left alone to exist as a typical family working through their lives. The entire show became consumed with its agenda, especially with the storylines concerning the sister-in-law & the father. Many times Mark Paul Gosselaar's character is portrayed as the clueless white guy who needs to taught a lesson, even within his own family. I grew up very closely with 2 sets of interracial cousins & none of us were having any of these conversations. We knew who each of us were as individuals, as unique members of our family, as people with character as well as flaws. In simply closely existing as people in the same family with our own stories & lives we naturally respected & appreciated these issues without really having to engage in the specific "discussions" Mixed-ish suggests are common & necessary. Getting to know people as people has become a neglected concept. So unfortunate, cuz that's the only way past whatever issues we're all squawking about today.

by Anonymousreply 33May 16, 2021 4:10 PM

I'm shad to shee Mixedish canshelled.

by Anonymousreply 34May 16, 2021 4:17 PM

Katey was horrendous as Penny's mother on BBT. Reading and reciting lines in contrast to the others who developed actual characters.

Mixhed-ish

by Anonymousreply 36May 16, 2021 4:53 PM

[quote] Mixed-ish

They really need to come up with more original titles.

by Anonymousreply 37May 16, 2021 7:06 PM

How the hell is "A Million Little Things" still on the air?

by Anonymousreply 38May 16, 2021 7:07 PM

The problem with some of these shows is they are too message heavy about BLM, COVID and other issues and people don’t want to be lectured. Station 19 and Grey’s have been the worst for this.

by Anonymousreply 39May 16, 2021 10:46 PM

Yeah this network season has been a real low point, you can tell all the great writers who would've been working on network tv 10 years ago have moved on to cable and streaming and now network is left with the weak writers who will take anything.

by Anonymousreply 40May 16, 2021 11:58 PM

R38 Indeed.

by Anonymousreply 41May 17, 2021 12:03 AM

Mark-Paul Gosselaar male lead on Mixed-ish. He's had worse luck and more shots than anyone else mentioned in this thread. Saved by the Bell NYPD Blue (Franklin & Bash I guess could be considered a minor success since it lasted for 4 seasons but only produced 40 episodes) were the only ones that stuck for him.

His misfires:

Saved by the Bell: The College Years - 19 episodes

Hyperion Bay - 17 episodes

D.C. - 7 episodes

Raising the Bar - 25 episodes (2 seasons)

Truth Be Told (10 episodes)

Pitch (13 episodes)

The Passage (10 episodes)

And now Mixed-ish (23 episodes over 2 seasons)

by Anonymousreply 42May 17, 2021 12:34 AM

It just sounded so terrible. Like a 70s episodic drama that someone dusted off.

Erin Brockovich should stick to advocacy.

by Anonymousreply 43May 17, 2021 12:37 AM

Only olds watch network tv anymore.

by Anonymousreply 44May 17, 2021 2:40 AM

R7 nailed it. Way too many names/exes/relationships/bs to keep track of. No loss.

by Anonymousreply 45May 17, 2021 2:42 AM

Isn't the market glutted? You'd have to be unemployed, have insomnia and have six TVs to watch all these shows.

by Anonymousreply 46May 17, 2021 3:09 AM

RIP The Katey Sagal Programme.

by Anonymousreply 47May 17, 2021 1:48 PM

R29, Ed has been reduced to doing comic con events. lol

by Anonymousreply 61May 18, 2021 11:03 AM

I liked it too. Between losing this and the Wilson Bethel programme, I won't have much to watch on network TV. I signed the petition in r53's link.

by Anonymousreply 62May 18, 2021 11:36 AM

R19= lame

by Anonymousreply 63May 18, 2021 11:37 AM

One of the oddest things for me was 67 year old Katy with what looks to be a sassy teenage daughter. Maybe it was a stepdaughter, but still. And Erin Brockovich is like the Sarah Jessica Parker of the law world. She's going to flog that long dead horse past the finish line if there's a dime to be made off the carcass!

by Anonymousreply 64May 18, 2021 11:52 AM

Even streaming r51. Network tv shows are for a mostly older audience.

by Anonymousreply 65May 18, 2021 3:32 PM

[quote]One of the oddest things for me was 67 year old Katy with what looks to be a sassy teenage daughter.

This happens all the time with actors and actresses. They're old enough to be grandparents but they're still playing the parents of school-aged children. It's pure vanity.

by Anonymousreply 66May 18, 2021 3:36 PM

Maybe they can work a show around the magic of The Sagal Twins?

Katey and Krista have some nerve. ABC promoted the hell out of this show. It was a running joke on the Grey’s Reddit threads.

And both Katey and Krista are employed by ABC on other shows. Such privilege.

by Anonymousreply 68May 18, 2021 7:01 PM

R68 Exactly. ABC did everything on their part to try to make it a success. She needs to accept it was simply a flop. If a show isn’t catching on after 5 episodes, it probably never will.

by Anonymousreply 69May 18, 2021 7:36 PM

FUNNY LINE ---Conners last week-----Candice Bergen says to Katey (who is dressed like a rocker teenager)= "You're gonna ride that Rock and Roll horse until it drops, aren't you?"

R70 What’s funny is Candace is only 8 years older than Katey.

by Anonymousreply 71May 19, 2021 1:29 AM

Well, it looks like ABC is happy to keep her on The Conner’s even after all her bitching about Rebel.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 72May 20, 2021 9:21 AM

Forgive me R72, because I haven't watched "The Conners" except for clips online...

Sagal was the best part of that clip, followed by Bergen, and Gilbert. Perhaps it's supposed to play this way, but when one is young and cynical it can be humorous, and entertaining. When one is middle-aged, or old and cynical...they mostly just come off as angry and bitter. If I DID watch this show, I'd probably largely detest Darlene, who was always my favorite previously. A true reflection of life? I guess so.

Lecy and John look terrible, and Metcalf truly is a phenomenal actress.

Oh, and I couldn't care less about "Sons...", but I adore Sagal (mostly from her "Married...With Children" days...which was a fixture of my childhood), but I hope she acts on t.v. and in film for a long time to come.

by Anonymousreply 73May 20, 2021 9:52 AM

I love how R4 claims Ed O'Neill is out of a job, as if he's an insurance salesman who was just laid off... ich O'Neill did 11 years on America's top sitcom. He earned close to $100 million and will continue to mint money from reruns and residuals, which is rare today, but that show is one of the few actually still generates money in reruns. $100 million earned from the age of 65-75. What an unemployed bum.

by Anonymousreply 74May 20, 2021 9:59 AM

ABC promoted the hell out of this, so they can shut the fuck up. Hollywood has truly lost any understanding of their audience. The Oscars was a perfect example of this.

People knew what Rebel was. People want to relax at 10PM and settle into a story that’s engaging and distracting. They don’t want to be proselytized to by a football-faced multi millionaire.

Agenda TV keeps bombing every single time, yet they’re gonna keep riding that until the wheels fall off.

by Anonymousreply 75May 22, 2021 8:04 PM

ABC really did promote the shit out of this show. I saw promos for it for at least two months prior to its first episode airing. They kept Rebel during Station 19 and Grey's.

It was a running joke on the Station 19 and Grey's Reddit threads, "How many times are they going to promote that Rebel show tonight??" It made me laugh.

I like Katey but it just seemed like Erin Brockovich The TV Series.

by Anonymousreply 76May 22, 2021 8:21 PM

I don't know anyone who watches network tv anymore except my parents and aunts and uncles.

by Anonymousreply 77May 22, 2021 9:04 PM

R60, Anders Holm got fired and replaced by Gosselaar.

by Anonymousreply 78May 22, 2021 10:27 PM

I like the show. It feels like an old-fashioned network TV show, and I kind of enjoy that. It doesn't have the same quirks that often annoy me about Netflix series whose quality and sensibilities are all over the place. The tone is a little comedic and a little dramatic. And it's not a fucking comic book.

by Anonymousreply 79May 25, 2021 12:47 PM

R39: Watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy is akin to taking a gender studies class. Just end the fucking thing already.

by Anonymousreply 80May 25, 2021 12:54 PM

I cannot believe Grey's Anatomy is still on. ABC must be afraid to pull the plug because the whole network of scripted TV may swirl down the drain with it.

I know one person who watches it. She just turned 68. I don't understand why anyone would continue past a few seasons. I liked it a lot at first. Then the offscreen antics with the blonde chick and the gay-hating 'Chief' annoyed me and took me out of the show's drama. Then aircraft kept falling from the sky into the hospital, a bridge, etc., a bomb went off in the hospital and turned people to "pink mist," and I eventually realized it's a terrible soap opera and turned it off and never thought about it again until a year or two ago when I heard it was still on.

The only thing I find interesting related to it now is that Ellen Pompeo has done shockingly candid interviews in recent years that I have found fascinating. She's like, "yeah, well, I wanted to be a movie star and thought I was slumming it on a TV show and I was embarrassed to lower myself to it. It turned out to be really hard work with long days and I hated it. But Shonda was a great boss and a teacher and I learned a lot and had opportunities to direct and most importantly I am rich as fuck. I sold out for a TV show and I'm set for life and I'm getting old and I'm not a movie star and that's fine."

by Anonymousreply 81May 25, 2021 1:01 PM

[quote]I cannot believe Grey's Anatomy is still on.

Surely by now the show is set in an assisted living home, with the doctors trying to score the choice handicapped parking spots and battling over who has the best hair plugs

by Anonymousreply 82May 25, 2021 1:06 PM

R81: ABC just doesn’t want to say goodbye to the money.

by Anonymousreply 83May 25, 2021 1:09 PM

Another note about Ellen Pompeo; she was surprisingly frank about Katherine Heigl and how she screwed herself over with big ego & histrionics. I can't remember what exactly she said, but it was something like: Katherine could've worked with the producers & they'd have worked around her, but she got a big attitude and when things went south for her, she had no friends.

She was really only stating the obvious, but most of the time co-stars just deflect with "well, she's so talented & I wish her the best"

by Anonymousreply 84May 25, 2021 1:10 PM

so Futurama is getting another season or dvd release?

by Anonymousreply 85May 25, 2021 1:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 88May 25, 2021 1:45 PM

Rebel deserves a second chance. As you get to know the characters the shows improve.

by Anonymousreply 89May 28, 2021 2:48 PM

The Greys Anatomy phenomenon has been well documented. Right around the time it was winding down, Netflix blew up and it continues to be a huge Netflix winner that keeps delivering new generations of fans to the show. Some of the new fans weren't even alive when it started.

So its possible ABC is barely paying anything or turning a profit just by keeping it on the air due to the netflix deal. And if ABC cancelled it, Netflix would keep it going anyway.

by Anonymousreply 90May 29, 2021 11:06 PM

I watched Station 19, Grey's and Rebel last night.

Three hours of fucking agendas shoved down my throat and I felt I was watching lectures instead of drama series.

The writing was so lazy and on the nose. Just throwing stats around and using public events to tell a story instead of being creative or imaginative. On Grey's, one of the characters had a breakdown and told his black friend he will quit his job to work for his foundation so he can be an ally. It was laughable. I thought it was satire.

People have already read about this stuff on the news or on blogs or forums. If they are going to tell these stories, maybe do it in a less subtle or more creative way. But that's not Krista. She sucks.

by Anonymousreply 91May 30, 2021 2:02 AM

IMDB Tv has gotten the streaming rights to season 1 and if it does well the show could possibly be revived with a season 2.
