Georgia the country?

Has anyone been? They are now opened up to vaccinated tourists and I found a great little ticket out of lax? Should I go?

by Anonymousreply 54July 5, 2021 2:33 PM

where is it?

by Anonymousreply 1May 13, 2021 7:03 PM

It's the birthplace of wine.

by Anonymousreply 3May 13, 2021 7:09 PM

Lots of people there eat yogurt and live to 100 (according to the 1970s commercial)

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2021 7:17 PM

Funny you should ask, OP. I had a vacation to Georgia and Armenia booked and paid for last summer.

I wish I could tell you about it, but that bitch Corona torpedoed it, and I'm out a couple thousand bucks.

I'm so traumatized, I don't think I'll be going there any time soon, but I believe it's very interesting, and I know first hand that their food is fantastic. Really great food.

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2021 7:30 PM

[quote] Has anyone been?

No. No one at all.

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2021 7:57 PM

In Georgia all seems to breathe freedom and peace and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 7May 13, 2021 7:58 PM

I was there 2 years ago for hiking. Very primitive conditions just a bit off the beaten track (pump your water from a well, outhouses, etc). Goats in unlikely places. The mountain cuisine is bread and melted cheese, not super nourishing and gets old fast. The hiking is advanced - very steep trails and if you go off the main route, GPS tracks are a lie and you are wayfinding based on trail markers, or was that just lichen on a rock?

Also SUPER homophobic. A visibly gay couple would be in physical danger anywhere in Georgia, city or country, day or night. Even the 20 something hipsters with Billy Eilish hair are homophobic. If you are a Westerner traveling alone, people will confront you about it trying to suss out if you are gay. I am not exaggerating this aspect of the country.

Learn the alphabet before going to read signs and buses.

by Anonymousreply 8May 13, 2021 7:58 PM

Georgian boys have some of the biggest schlongs you'll ever see: long, thick, usually hairy and non-kosher, of course.

by Anonymousreply 9May 13, 2021 8:02 PM

R8, that's a shame about the homophobia. It's a place I would love to visit, but the antigay sentiment makes it offputting. Although I'm not going to lie -- it's not like I haven't visited other non-gay-friendly places before (Egypt).

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2021 8:23 PM

Can you use grindr there? And are the men uncut or cut?

by Anonymousreply 11May 13, 2021 8:41 PM

Georgia is on my immediate list. Their food is the best in the world. And they invented wine!

by Anonymousreply 12May 13, 2021 8:44 PM

Love it.

by Anonymousreply 13May 13, 2021 8:55 PM

Look up Bald and Bankrupt on YouTube, he has a few videos about Georgia. I think it would be worth going just for the food. Tbilisi is very popular with digital nomads these days.

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2021 8:59 PM

Thanks for the information. I have booked a ticket and will be in Georgia for 2 months.

by Anonymousreply 15May 13, 2021 10:12 PM

I can’t believe you decided to go after reading this thread.

Deadly mountains, melted cheese and mass homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 16May 13, 2021 10:21 PM

Hi, Georgia!

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2021 10:45 PM

No, but I've been to Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2021 3:18 AM

Seems gross

by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2021 3:50 AM

I’ve been to Georgia but I’ve never been to me.

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2021 3:51 AM

It's cool country, horse-hung guys (R9 is correct), good wine, nice scenery; but there's the little matter of war suddenly breaking out with their break away provinces. So good luck, OP.

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2021 4:05 AM

“Breakaway provinces” = occupied by Russian invasion in undeclared war

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2021 4:51 AM

Newsflash: DL isn't always very accurate.

Anyway, the Nomad List people seem to like Tbilisi even though they don't make it sound very good (there's more reviews besides the one below).

I’m leaving for there this evening, on the midnight train.

[quote] I found a great little ticket out of lax

No, you didnt.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2021 5:37 AM

I was looking at going there to teach English, but all the teaching forums I'm on said to avoid. Rip off artists and demanding, nasty cunts abound.

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2021 5:50 AM

The Georgians call their country "Sakartvelo."

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2021 5:59 AM

R9 is correct. I can testify. Biggest cocks I had were in Georgia and the neighbouring Armenia. No small peen in sight.

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2021 6:08 AM

On the east coast, R1. (.......of the Black Sea)

by Anonymousreply 29May 14, 2021 7:37 AM

You guys are brave for hooking up there. I wouldn’t trust the local guys no matter how hung they are.

by Anonymousreply 30May 14, 2021 1:15 PM

Their language is one of the most difficult to learn and pronounce.

by Anonymousreply 31May 14, 2021 1:41 PM

Yes, but what are its pronouns??

by Anonymousreply 32May 14, 2021 1:45 PM

[quote] The Georgians call their country "Sakartvelo."

Which brings up the question as to why we continue to call it "Georgia"

We've allowed Upper Volta and Burma to change their names to something more local. Peking and Bombay too

[quote] If you are a Westerner traveling alone, people will confront you about it trying to suss out if you are gay.

I suspect there would have to be multiple other clues for them to go there

by Anonymousreply 34May 14, 2021 1:50 PM

Stuff you learn only on DL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's clan is originally from Adjara, Georgia.

by Anonymousreply 37May 14, 2021 2:16 PM

I was there briefly on business so didn’t see much of it but Tbilisi looked worth exploring. They have a local alcohol that you need to drink in tiny sips over a long period if you don’t want your head to explode.

by Anonymousreply 38May 14, 2021 2:34 PM

I think it’s a particularly strong version of a local ?brandy called Chacha.

by Anonymousreply 39May 14, 2021 2:44 PM

Their food is the belle of the ball in the region. They're one of the few in the region who don't just boil down a bunch of beets for soup, make a salad with tons of mayonaisse, and call it a day.

by Anonymousreply 40May 14, 2021 4:44 PM

Another place for information is a Facebook group called Georgian wanderers. They are pretty pretty upbeat about the country. I got a ticket on Qatar Airlines for 675. Usd. Strange how ticket prices are cheaper now than the were 40 years ago when I first started flying abroad.

by Anonymousreply 41May 14, 2021 6:16 PM

R26, I've heard that the people are very hospitable in small towns, but locals in Tbilisi can be ... brusque. But that's true of a lot of ex-Soviet and Eastern European countries. Compared to American standards, people can come across as brusque.

by Anonymousreply 42May 14, 2021 6:39 PM

Georgian men look like all the other men from the Caucasus.

Tbilisi is a great place. Loads of character since it wasn't Sovietized too much. Great food, too. The other Georgian cities don't quite compare.

Lots of reports of fierce sheepdogs in the mountains, though, and that's kept me off the trails.

Pay zero attention to those wasting your time here who've never visited the country. It's one of those off-the-beaten-path places you need to visit now, before the crowds arrive.

You will have a wonderful trip!

by Anonymousreply 44May 15, 2021 1:10 AM

And Americans don't need a visa and can stay for a year, in case you're nomading through the pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 45May 15, 2021 1:13 AM

About a year or so ago I saw a lovely gay film set there called And Then We Danced, and except for a brief gay romance, the country came across as so homophobic, the main character has to escape to another country if he wanted to live a happy life.

I will say the food looked good.

R46, the film sounds interesting. Will have to check it out.

by Anonymousreply 47May 15, 2021 6:11 PM

I love to travel and have been to many countries; however, I would not go to any country where I had been warned that it's homophobic. Of course, you have to do your own research, but hemophobia is nothing to challenge when you are on your own in a foreign country no matter how much you want to see it. Homophobia isn't just slight discrimination or a mild insult as you walk down the street. Nowadays with some of these thug countries--and maybe not-so-thug countries, you are taking your life in your hand via brutal violence, sever injury, disfigurement and death. Unless you're going on a tour and your safety is assured and you will never be leaving your group, don't take the risk with a trip to any of these places on your own. Just go somewhere else. If a place like Georgia is as homophobic as reported, go somewhere else. It's not worth it.

by Anonymousreply 48May 15, 2021 11:02 PM

R48, Georgia isn't San Francisco but it is NOT that homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 49May 16, 2021 9:37 AM

R49, R48 is some sort of Russian troll spreading propaganda.

by Anonymousreply 50May 16, 2021 10:34 AM

I have traveled widely over the years in all sorts of places. The only times I have been bashed was in the USA. Once on Castro street in San Francisco.

by Anonymousreply 51May 16, 2021 3:22 PM

Georgia rocked up to Eurovision 2009 in Moscow with a song called “We Don’t Wanna Put In”.

Putin was not amused and they “voluntarily withdrew” from the competition
