[Quote] Unprompted, Bassett tells me a different story about “Drivers License.” Two days after the song was released, he “started getting very ill, and it kept getting worse," he says. "I thought it was, like, food poisoning or whatever. It got worse, it got worse, it got worse, it got worse”—until he was hospitalized with “unimaginable pain” on the day “Lie Lie Lie” was released. He’s slightly vague on the cause of all this—although, he says, “I’m sure stress had a part in it”—but it turned out to be septic shock and heart failure: "[The doctors] told me that I had a 30% chance of survival. They told me that if I had not checked into the hospital within 12 hours, I would have been found [dead] in my apartment." While social media gossiped, Bassett "didn't have any energy to be able to focus on anything but staying alive."

When he was 13-14, he had an 18 year-old jerk off buddy (so he’s done at least that). Rumors in his high school were spreading about him and the older guy, and he did not like that.
I wonder if he’s ever had any legal gay hookups?
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 23, 2021 5:50 AM |
I suspect that one of his older sisters was the one molesting him from ages 5-9.

r88 There's not an "18 year-old jerk off buddy" in the world that would keep it at just handjobs. Anyway there's a guy who will be spending Christmas frantically purging social media accounts.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 23, 2021 11:18 AM |
Um, he called the 18/19 year old a groomer, not a jerk off buddy. And jerking off was just the beginning of what the guy got him to do. When he told the guy their activities reminded him of things his molester did to him from ages 5-9, the guy told him that was disgusting and to never speak of it again.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 23, 2021 11:38 AM |
Having been abused by a family member as a child and then groomed by an older guy when he was 13/14, it's hardly surprising that it's left him confused about his sexuality. Desire is now equated with shame and guilt, as he says in the interview.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 23, 2021 12:11 PM |
Why are you bothering us with this nobody?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 23, 2021 12:15 PM |
I didn't get the impression that he's all that confused about his sexuality. Moreso that the abuse has affected his ability to be intimate and to trust.

R95 He's said in a previous interview that he wants to be a different letter (of the LGBTQ+ alphabet) on a different day and that he's still figuring it all out....of course, this may be the standard dipping-your-toes-in-the-gay-waters way of coming out, but it seems that his previous relationships with men, such as they are, have been abusive.

I just watched that podcast he did. When he talked about the abuse it came across as internalized homophobia. I'm not talking about the abuse that started when he was 5 by a family member, that was totally fucked up and never should have happened, obviously. But the way he talked about his so called "abuse" by an older man when he was 13-14. The way he talked about it at first I thought it was a man in his 50s who groped him, but no. The other guy was a teenager himself. They were BOTH teenagers. He was out of puberty. He wasn't a kid anymore. It's what teenagers do. To call it abuse? Nah. I think he wanted it. Then freaked out later because others found out and bullied him. He knew it was "wrong". He has some serious issues. I would be surprised if he ever dates another guy. He is a classical bisexual who will choose a girl because it's easier, and he will always consider same sex relationships (at least when it comes to himself) as wrong because of the abuse when he was a kid. It's a lot to unpack and he will never not associate gay sex as something wrong. He is already dented. Then it's Hollywood pressuring him into straight relationships. So yeah, not gonna date another guy in a very very long time, if ever, imo. Would love to be proven wrong though.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | December 24, 2021 11:16 AM |
R105 The guy has some serious issues. He said he was abused. He explained a normal relationship in high school between two teenagers and called it abuse. Totally fucked up. He wasn't a child. He clearly wanted it. It's only after people found out and bullied him for it that he equated it with something bad and wrong. He is suffering from internalized homophobia. It wasn't abuse. That's bs.

by Anonymous | reply 115 | December 24, 2021 11:23 AM |
R104 Thank you! Glad someone else noticed. He equates his sexuality and the gay sex he had with abuse. He needs to separate the abuse that happened from his sexuality, and the abuse that happened when he was 5 with the so called "abuse" that happened when he was a teenager which wasn't abuse at all.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | December 24, 2021 11:25 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 117 | December 24, 2021 11:26 AM |
R115 Most people are out of puberty by then. Besides, the "abuse" happened with another teenager, not with a 50 year old man. It was with another guy his own age in the theatre group. Maybe he was taken advantage of and "gaslighted" (I know how much gen z like to use that word), but to call it abuse is a bit much.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | December 24, 2021 11:28 AM |
R117 Lots of gay experiences start that way. He was old enough to stop it. He wasn't 5 anymore. If he didn't want to do those things, why didn't he stop? Maybe because he secretly wanted it. He did want to have sex with another boy. It wasn't until his classmates bullied him that he thought it was "wrong". Joshua ia seriously messed up. No wonder he thinks it's easier to be with women. He still equates his sexuality with the abuse and something that's bad.

I would say this for publicity but the fact he is going after people online and how he is acting towards Rodrigo. Shows he is motivated by personal convictions. He seems angry at how much humiliation that whole thing caused, not just opening up about sexual abuse but that whole Rodrigo relationship drama which both resulted in him getting cyber-harrassed. I'm interested in the end result of this. I don't care that he's being outspoken and crazy. It's better than being a coked-up boring robot who smiles and says nothing like what these Disney handlers want.

[quote] Now she's making veiled attacks on Olivia and Taylor Swift for not reining in their fans. The audacity of this cunt
Good. Beyonce needs to reign in her fans too. It's not acceptable how these artists knowingly weaponize their cults and don't call out their gross behavior and cyberbullying tactics.

[quote] So even though Joshua apparently doesn't want to label himself, Attitude Magazine went and labeled him as queer
Hmmm I think the new labels should be "I love dick", "I love pussy" or "I love both." Very simple and to the point.

As for calling DL elderly for not knowing this guy. I'm in my 20s and didn't know him either until I saw some thread pop up about him a month ago. People over the age of 14 generally don't watch live-action Disney Channel (or Disney Plus) shows or care about Disney pop stars. That stuff is manufactured for tweens and tends to be generic and a rinse-and-repeat of the same bubblegum formula which most of the audience grows out of once they reach high school. Except the animated stuff like Pixar or the cartoon shows like Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls that are written more for a nerdy audience with adult humor. Honestly, it's really just Star Wars and Marvel keeping Disney+ afloat.

R118 The reason he refers to it as abusive (although only now, in retrospect does he conder it this way) is to do with the coercion and power imbalance involved. Although he (presumably) enjoyed the sex, the mind-games that came with it and the way that he was groomed by the older boy is what reminded him of his experiences of abuse as a child.

Joshua says he's reached out to Olivia several times privately with no response. When an interviewer asked Olivia about him, she said "I don't fuck with ghosts and they don't fuck with me." The filming of next season will definitely be interesting.

r142 im in my late 20's and had never heard of him before he came out as 'queer'.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | December 24, 2021 8:04 PM |
R143 Yeah, you might be right about the power imbalance and gaslighting. But I still think it's a stretch to call it abusive. It makes it sound like rape, like he was groped by a 70 year old man. I was completely flabbergasted when he said the other guy was 18 or 19. The only reason he considered it "abusive" after the fact was probably because he equated it with the actual real abuse that happened when he was 5. And also, the fact that others bullied him about the sexuality and about the relationship didn't help. To me it sounded like he liked it and wanted it. It wasn't until after the fact that it became "abusive".

I wonder how much today's puriteen-ical culture colored his lens of the relationship. Much older people get in abusive, gaslighting, power imbalanced relationships as well.

I understand his struggle. He was abused as a little boy and he has difficulty separating his attraction to men from his sexual abuse. He feels guilty like many CSA survivors. Many survivors feel like they were asking for it and slut shame themselves even into adulthood. He is getting therapy and opening up which is greatly beneficial. He will mature and learn to understand that he was not made gay by the abuse. If anything the abuser probably noticed he was a effeminate little gay boy from a conservative Bible-believing community and saw him as an easy target. These youth church groups are filled with those perverts.

He'll come out as gay eventually too. Queer is likely what his team is pushing because his fangirls still want him to be obtainable in their eyes.

Abandoned by his "friends" at death's door. That's showbiz, kid.

He is like this clone of Shawn Mendes but so much more likable and better looking. John Mayer needs to knock on Josh's door.

[Quote] He won't even admit to being bi, he says he's "queer". He is probably a straight leaning bisexual who hates his gay side.
Hush. This whole thing started because he said that Harry Styles is hot and that he guessed that meant that he was coming out.

I don't think the stress was about internet comments so much as it was about what a juggernaut Rodrigo's music has been. The music he released has barely been a blip in comparison.
The root of Rodigo's actions and Bassett's is the same: Ambition.

R146 Well, he has said previously that he didn't consider it abusive at the time, so I would guess that it's his therapist who has pointed out that the behaviour of that 18 yr old guy was part of a pattern of older men taking advantage of him sexually.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | December 25, 2021 8:41 AM |
1) I do think the death threats got to him. If much older men like Mayer and Gyllenhaal with decades in the business were affected by the sheer volume of attacks from songs released about them, then so would a teenage boy.
2) I don't think Bassett is arguing there shouldn't be thinly veiled songs about famous exes. In music, that's a universally accepted formula for success laid down by Taylor Swift, though it's only really worked for women. He's arguing for an ethical code where the artist at least puts out a disclaimer to not harass/attack anyone. Trouble is, no one really cares if the exes are attacked and some corporations even join in the bullying for exposure, like Sourpatch Kids did with Gyllenhaal.

Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Olivia Rodrigo really exploited the power of social media hivemind. I always found it disturbing how cyberbullying is tolerated if against a supposed ex. Never mind relationships involve two people and both can mess up. Granted these fans are either emotionally immature or worship their idol to the point they can't see the situation in a more nuanced light. Fans even jump to conclusions and assume it's this person without solid evidence. It's ridiculous to me, how these famous pop stars are rewarded for acting like petty children and it's seen as "empowering."

R162 He is 21.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | January 2, 2022 1:32 PM |
R143, he might not have enjoyed the sex with the 18 year-old. If you read Corey Feldman’s memoirs, he talks about how when he was 15, he had an assistant who was in his early 20s who was basically supposed to be his babysitter. He really loved this new friend, he thought he was fun, but he didn’t like being molested, the only reason he went along with it was because he didn’t want to upset this new friend.

He still seems somewhat flustered talking about it, though he claims the coming out post was the easiest thing he's ever done.
