And that’s how she finally got to come to the big dance.

Miss Universe 2021 will be held later this year, probably in December. So the outgoing queen holds the record for the longest reign, and the newly crowned one next Sunday will reign for the shortest time.

Osmel Sousa is the man who brought home nearly 10 Miss Universe titles to Venezuela. I think that the Michael Caine character in "Miss Congeniality" was modeled after Osmel.

But when the country collapsed, he fled to Argentina. Now Venezuela isn't even making the top 10 at pageants.

Venezuela has bigger issues than pageants to deal with. Like food and other necessities. The country was on the brink of collapse, at one point.

R56, I actually knew a Venezuelan guy, currently a prominent doctor in the US, who dated a Miss Venezuela. His mom used to help train the women for the pageant.

Osmel was born in Cuba and migrated to Venezuela as a teen. He fell in love with beauty queens when he first saw a Miss Cuba in the 1950s. Not before long, he was in the Miss Venezuela national team until he eventually clawed his way to the top, bringing the first Miss Universe crown to Venezuela in 1979, with gorgeous Maritza Sayalero, who could have done it all on her own because girlfriend could spot brass rings from a mile away and never missed an opportunity to shine, hanging on for the full ride.

Then Osmel oversaw six more Miss Venezuelas who were also crowned Miss Universe, 5 Miss Worlds (for a total of 6 for the country), and 7 Miss Internationals, before fleeing Caracas with the big bourgeoise migration.

First of all, it would be an invasion of medical privacy (ilegal in many countries) to do the costly research (in 81 countries!) to prove cosmetic surgery. Some procedures may be obvious to the naked eye, but most are not, and it wouldn’t be fair to discriminate only against the bad botch jobs.

Secondly, Miss Universe contestants have worn wigs, hair pieces, and extensions since the 1960s, as those are pretty much a part of the fashion trends of the moment. I don’t see you included those among your exceptions.

Interestingly, padded undergarments of any kind are forbidden. There was a Miss New York who was disqualified from Miss USA sometime in the 70s or 8Os for wearing a stuffed bra.

If you have 45 minutes to kill, watch the video of the costume competition on the website. The production goes off the rails early on as the hosts’ patter finishes before Miss Cambodia even starts her deliberately slow walk down the runway. What follows is contestants still posing at the end of the runway when the next contestant is announced. I fully expect one of them to push the other off the stage for hogging the camera.
