Candice Bergen
What does DL think of her? Or do they? I loved her until I read "A Fine Romance" -- her second book, which was pretentious and boring. Is she bi? Always wondered. Maureen Dowd interviewed her about six months ago for the NYT and asked her if she'd seen "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," which was her heyday. She said "The feeling of it was very close."
Bergen: “Terry was very stupid and he went out there to record Manson’s group singing,” Ms. Bergen said. “He knew it was very loaded, and one of Manson’s people came to the door once when I was at the house. Then one day, Terry just said, ‘We’re moving.’ I said, ‘When?’ He said, ‘Tomorrow.’ His mother had a house in Malibu that became David Geffen’s house where we went. Then they took the telescope off our balcony at the beach house. It was like Manson saying, ‘Don’t try to hide from me.’”

She was quite beautiful when she was younger, but I never understood her success. She really was not that great in Murphy Brown - the show was fine, but she really didn't bring that much to the role.
A child of celebrities and has had a charmed life. She plays the same 'broad' in every role. She's fine - but I just don't get it.

I watched her recently on an old episode of Saturday Night Live. It was right after the Equal Rights Amendment had been voted down. She let America know just how little she thought of them. It was kind of cringey.

R1 Have you ever read about her "charmed" life growing up? She was expected to treat Charlie McCarthy, her father's dummy, as her favored brother. That has to mess you up mentally.

R3 - meh - so she's rich and famous and beautiful, dated handsome men and had her own fragrance and a long acting career while being married to one of the finest French film directors of all time.
Give me the dummy to play my brother - I'll do it if I get all the rest. Probably preferable to my real brothers anyway.
That's a curiosity, not a tragedy or a trauma.

In "A Fine Romance," I was surprised by the name-dropping (even though she grew up with the royalty of Tinseltown and truly knows all these people), the personal shoppers, a somewhat Gallic disdain for the American proletariat, and several redundancies ("Murphy Brown made me rich!") which should have been caught by an editor.

'Impossibly gorgeous' according to a review of 1970s The Adventurers and she was in that film. She always came across as genuine and intelligent in interviews and seemed to have a good sense of humor and didn't seem conceited in the least. Her performance in Rich and Famous (1981) is funny, Meg Ryan played her daughter as she did in the remake of The Women (2008). Always like her though I saw few of her films and she was good on the few episodes I saw of Murphy Brown. She played Lakey, a lesbian, in her film debut The Group (1966)

The whole Manson connection was so creepy. Bergen says Charlie stole her telescope from the Malibu place but Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere and the Raiders was their roommate on Cielo Drive before they moved and he said,
"Everybody speculated that Manson sent his minions up there to get rid of Terry because he was angry about not getting a record deal. But Terry and I talked about it later and Terry said Manson knew (Melcher had moved) because Manson or someone from his organization left a note on Terry's porch in Malibu.

She is one of the few what you see is what you get people in Hollywood. She WAS privileged beyond belief. By her family and her countenance. She did drugs and messed around at photography and although she was laughably bad actress, one of the worst - she managed to find a very narrow place where she could succeed. She is NOT stunning. She looks like an android. She was kind of symmetrically and artificially perfect looking. Not at all sexy or glamorous or even memorable from the neck down. Walks like a horse and acts with her nostrils.
But she's a cool enough old liberal and not as obnoxious as Jane Fonda. Got quite a bit fat. But not I hate myself fat. More like fuck it. Let's eat.
I do admire that she called out Bob Hope as a creepy weirdo who fucked every starlet in town while pretending to be for family and country.
She has a nice hearty laugh and is probably the most predictable line reader in the business. In that you can predict every cadence and word and the miniscule inflections she delivers. She's quite terrible but seems to enjoy herself.
And her nose is not terrible but one of those real noses that looks too fake to be true. Kind of BLANDED out her good looks completely. Put her in the debutante yearbook forever.
Oh, and no, she wasn't any good in any movie. Ever. She's a terrible actress. But as an old broad barking out lines, she's okay. As the wised up "smart" friend or tough mother. Oh look, it's Candice Bergen!

One of the great beauties of her generation. She herself would tell you she’s no great shakes as an actress. In fact she more or less lampooned herself in goofy comedy. I think she’s a class act- modest, very little vanity for a woman of such incredible beauty in her youth- she easily could have gone the Hollywood bombshell plastic fantastic route, or the social X-ray route. She chose smart self deprecating gravitating to the best of the great hand dealt her. Like I said, class act.

Those are terrible photos R39. She must have looked better than that. Flabby stomach and shapeless thighs. No Barbarella. Candice, her mother and brother all have that terrible pinched nose that charlie imagines as beautiful. It might have been that way a hundred years ago - but it's what MOST detracts from Bergens looks to be honest. She looked so waspish she might sting you. Small eyes. Pointy nose. Thin lips. There was nothing juicy about her beauty at all. Very pristine. Even Brooke Shields looked sexier, and she's a horse.

I read she’d also dated dean paul Martin before he married Olivia hussey. They must have looked like two of the most perfect people together.
I also read she was threatened by another star of ‘the group’ for trying to write an article for esquire about the filming and given a hard time by some of the other girls because they didn’t think she deserved the character of Lakey.
Personally I think she was awful in rich & famous, so over the top and annoying. I realise she was supposed to be somewhat hysterical but she could have dialled it down a little. She made Jackie look like meryl Streep by comparison.
In her first book, didn’t she say she had been almost raped by a well-known teen idol in his car? Anyone know who she was referring to?
She seems lovely and has a nice persona. I used to follow her Instagram and she came across down to earth and not obnoxious or sanctimonious like a lot of others.

The Group was a surprisingly terrible movie, despite the excellent cast. Basically Shirley Knight and Joan Hackett carry the whole thing; if it weren't for them, the movie would have been even worse. Given the horrible dialog she has to spout, Bergen actually does well as the cold lesbian Lakey, which always made me think, given that she can't act, that maybe she wasn't acting.

Bergen could be effective in particular roles with a good director - CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (I hate the film, but she's good in it), STARTING OVER, and even RICH AND FAMOUS (I disagree that she's over the top - I've come across many women who act exactly like her character). In that recent Soderberg film LET THEM ALL TALK, I was more interested in her character than Streep's. Also, she's effective in THE GROUP as the role is pretty small and doesn't require too much from her - if you want over the top, watch Jessica Walter in that film. Lord!
She admitted she was not serious about acting when she was younger and it shows much of the time. She made a number of really bad films in the 60's and early 70's, and she's mediocre to terrible in every one: THE SAND PEBBLES, THE MAGUS, GETTING STRAIGHT, THE ADVENTURERS, T.R. BASKIN.
Only Ali MacGraw was worse. At least Bergen improved over time. MacGraw never did.

I'd put her in the same class as Jane Fonda with Jane being about 10 years older. They know each other but aren't close. Hollywood Royalty. Gorgeous looks. Great taste. Style-wise, they both put themselves together very well with Candy being maybe a bit more elegant and refined in her personal style. Jane outclasses her with the acting but Candy has a kind of mysterious quality. She claims she has kept women at a cautious remove because they would see her as a threat to their men when she was around, and she didn't want to be responsible for those feelings. I wish she had written more about the 1960s "Manson" years in "A Fine Romance," but it turned out to be a love note to her daughter Chloe Malle (who, unfortunately, inherited her father's looks). Knock Wood was a much better read.

Turns out, it's not all THAT terrible. It's has some very clunky writing , but Bergen, Peter Boyle, James Caan and especially Marcia Rodd are all more than serviceable in their parts. It seems like a lot of the reviewers at the time weren't into the fact Baskin is an unlikable character who is never really redeemed.

Bergen was conventionally attractive and came from a family that was A-list adjacent (cosilaized with the A-list corwd but never considered a big part of it). So, of course she had no trouble being cast in things, esp. in an era where a pretty face and a nice figure meant you didn't need much talent. She was wooden or plain awful and knew it. Over time, she found her niche, which is really a sort of world-weary light comedy and people who could write for her strengths. She's aged well and done OK, outlasting her contemporaries without becoming an addict or a major attention whore.
So to the extent,I think of her. she seems like someone who never could have had a career with her looks AND background, but has managed to make a go of it without messing up her life or annoying the general public. She's also probably one of the few people with a "small world" connection to Manson/his victims with a believeable story. You'd think everyone in her age cohort was a Tate bestie or had cross paths with Manson the day before the murders.

I read her second book but for me she came off a little spoiled. She had a great childhood, living in Beverly Hills, the brother/dummy thing, was a joke, her father was a comedian. Went straight into the family business and never had to do a day of manual labor.

No one ever talks about this film and I don’t ever see it being in rotation on TV or streaming. It’s an amazing anti war movie, especially as a metaphor for what was going on in Vietnam at the time. I recall it being heart breaking and Bergen and Straus at the height of their youthful beauty.

This seems to be a good place to drop this bit of personal trivia. A couple of years ago I rented a house in Conchas Chinas in Puerto Vallarta. It was a beautiful place, and above the door in the main bedroom was an ornate sign that read Bergen-Malle Suite.
It turns out that Candy and Louis had an extended honeymoon at the place. Someone else famous who’s stayed there had another room named after them but I can’t recall now. The original owners who built it are from Dallas and still around. They’re big donors of the donors at the Dallas Symphony, super sweet people.
House is linked.

[quote]She really was not that great in Murphy Brown - the show was fine, but she really didn't bring that much to the role.
Actually, she was. Her job was often the "straight man" to the other characters. The character is very much like Mary in the Mary Tyler Moore Show in that sense. And she understood that, unlike Cybill Shepherd, who was jealous of the attention others in the cast got and insisted on being the funny one, which she wasn't.

R118, Then you saw the replacement cast.
"Producers of the Broadway revival of Gore Vidal‘s The Best Man are aiming to keep the star wattage on high when a number of original cast members depart early next month, bringing in some major-name replacements to complete the run.
Stepping in, respectively, for Candice Bergen, Eric McCormack, Kerry Butler and Angela Lansbury, are Cybill Shepherd, John Stamos, Kristin Davis and Elizabeth Ashley. They join original ensemble members James Earl Jones, John Larroquette and Jefferson Mays, who will remain with the show through its scheduled closing date of Sept. 9, as will Mark Blum, who replaced the injured Michael McKean."

Bergen was on Broadway previously in Hurlyburly, taking over from Sigourney Weaver. Mike Nichols directed that production. William Hurt, Christopher Walken, Judith Ivey, and Cynthia Nixon were still in it. I can't remember if Harvey Keitel was still there or not.
I happened to see Bergen's opening night performance and she was clearly nervous. I later heard from friends that she basically copied Weaver's performance, which was probably a good idea.
I read that the production rehearsal was "challenging" due to the collective egos of Hurt, Walken, Keitel, and playwright David Rabe. It's a crappy play anyway.

Candice Bergen was always beautiful in a timeless, classy sense. She is always courteous and gracious. She is smart, too. Her personal life was just that- her personal life.
She has outlasted her contemporaries, Jane Fonda, Jacqueline Bisset, Catherine Deneuve, Julie Christie, etc. by being able to stay relevant and now draw too much attention to herself (excluding the Dan Quayle incident, which Bergen actually agreed with him).
Candy Bergen is stable.

R170 Fonda has the show with Lily Tomlin, Sam Waterston, and Martin Sheen. It is funny, but not "Ivy League television." I know A LOT of people 40+ who hate Jane Fonda based on her Vietnam stunt.
Catherine Deneuve is an alcoholic, right? That is the perception from a lot of people. I did not know she still acted to be honest.
Julie Christie last big movie was Branagh's Hamlet in 1996 (which she was very good in). Her time off hurt her career. Didn't she marry money?
Jacqueline Bisset won a golden globe? I thought she needed the money. Or was that Olivia Hussey? What's the difference lol

Bourke-White travelled in the kinds of circles that would have been familiar to Bergen, so casting her made sense. Bourke-White also had lots of affairs with powerful (though not necessarily famous) men but that wouldn't have been a consideration for Ghandi. Trivia note: The father of a colleague who was an important WWII figure had an affair with Bourke-White---he had to read about because the father never discussed his dalliances..

Give it a break. The word beautiful is tossed around like nonsense by some elder gays here. Attractively pretty WASP women is what they usually mean. Beauty is in the eye etc. But most of those women OR their daughters were not beautiful R227.

Candice was beautiful, and she had a "classy" look that you don't see anymore in this era of trashbag hos and tacky celebrities.

Bergen was undeniably attractive AND she looked like a debutante zombie. Beauty requires a little more distinction than just symmetrical features and blondish hair. Her type of features did not go obsolete like dinosaurs. That bland kind of look might win a local beauty pageant today. In the south. She was whiter than white. And that nose was a bit much. And her coloring was all kind of washed out. She was pretty but nowhere near beautiful. "Classy" is just a projection. There were many more beautiful women around, even back when Candy was young. I don't think she was celebrated much. Her look was so alien and cold. She's was no Catherine Deneuve or Dunaway. Not even a Katherine Ross or McGraw. Those women had distinct beauty, classical or not.

She’s not as smart as she thinks she is.

R212 but they were raised to hate her by their parents. My father still will not watch anything she appears in.

Gia Garagme looked like a pekingese too and people claimed that she was beautiful? She wasn't either. Bergen is too classically good looking to be discarded. but she was far from beautiful. She looked a bit like Tyrone Power.

TO (R-230)... I LOVE the phrase " Debutante Zombie" It sounds like the name of a "all girl wanna-be punk rock group" or a Bad Horror movie featuring Tara Reid, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.

[quote]She didn’t appear to have a stitch of makeup on, and I thought she was gorgeous
HA HA HA! What some people believe about "no make-up." I guarantee you Candice spent a long time in front of that mirror creating the natural look.
