Please Recommend a Caribbean Island for an Easter vacation

We're planning ahead for 2022.

Already visited Jamaica, St Lucia, Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbados so would like to try somewhere new.

by Anonymousreply 61May 14, 2021 8:54 PM

Cuba

by Anonymousreply 1May 10, 2021 2:39 AM

Curaçao.

by Anonymousreply 2May 10, 2021 4:10 AM

I second Cuba. Wonderful in spring. Beautiful people.

by Anonymousreply 3May 10, 2021 4:13 AM

Cuba isn't in the Caribbean, is it? Thought it was the Atlantic. I'd recommend Anguilla.

by Anonymousreply 4May 12, 2021 1:22 AM

How about Easter Island?

by Anonymousreply 5May 12, 2021 1:26 AM

St. Lucia

by Anonymousreply 6May 12, 2021 1:33 AM

Why Caribbean?

by Anonymousreply 7May 12, 2021 1:40 AM

The water is nicer.

by Anonymousreply 8May 12, 2021 1:46 AM

R8 Nicer? Warmer, more shallow, clearer...what are you looking for?

by Anonymousreply 9May 12, 2021 1:48 AM

St. Barths.

Playground of the rich and famous.

by Anonymousreply 10May 12, 2021 1:49 AM

Tahiti in French Polynesia is stunning.

by Anonymousreply 11May 12, 2021 1:49 AM

Try another WIndward, OP, I think they're the best of the lot. You could also try Trinidad/Tobago for a change-up.

by Anonymousreply 12May 12, 2021 1:50 AM

Puerto Rico.

by Anonymousreply 13May 12, 2021 1:51 AM

Bonaire

by Anonymousreply 14May 12, 2021 1:56 AM

ABC islands off South America.

Aruba, Bonaire, or Curacao.

by Anonymousreply 15May 12, 2021 2:00 AM

Devil's Island.

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2021 2:01 AM

Mustique to totally chill, or Cuba to have a great time...both incredibly lovely in very different ways.

by Anonymousreply 17May 12, 2021 2:09 AM

Mustique

by Anonymousreply 18May 12, 2021 2:10 AM

William and Kate vacationed on Mustique, so it must be a nice location.

Barbados is lovely. Very English; not that many American tourists.

by Anonymousreply 20May 12, 2021 2:15 AM

Not Jamaica ..

by Anonymousreply 21May 12, 2021 2:17 AM

Try Bermuda.

It's not your typical Caribbean island.

Make sure to have a "Dark and Stormy" while you're there.
It's not your typical Caribbean island.

It's not a Caribbean island at all. Might as well suggest the Falklands.

by Anonymousreply 23May 12, 2021 2:22 AM

Is it not Obvious. Go to Easter Island. Duh

by Anonymousreply 24May 12, 2021 2:22 AM
Is it not Obvious. Go to Easter Island. Duh

How original, R24.

by Anonymousreply 25May 12, 2021 2:23 AM

Is it all-inclusive?

by Anonymousreply 26May 12, 2021 2:30 AM

r5 I scrolled past yours...obviously

by Anonymousreply 27May 12, 2021 2:37 AM

The only two white Caribbean Islands are St. Barths and Saba. St. Barths is for the rich. Saba is hard to get to.

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2021 2:53 AM

St. Vincent should be dirt cheap these days.
Cuba isn't in the Caribbean, is it? Thought it was the Atlantic.

Seriously, R4?

Cuba seems the most interesting.

by Anonymousreply 30May 12, 2021 3:23 AM

'Why Caribbean?'

The ocean there is calmer and much warmer than the Atlantic. The Med is cold at Easter. Our ideal Easter destination is the Maldives but they might still be off limits to UK visitors by next year. I love the Maldives for the snorkelling and the seclusion. You barely see another soul on the beaches, let alone get pestered by beach traders as seems to happen in Barbados and Jamaica.

by Anonymousreply 31May 12, 2021 11:59 PM

Bermuda is in the Atlantic.

by Anonymousreply 32May 12, 2021 11:59 PM

Only the south of Cuba is in the Caribbean and I've already been to Havana and Holguin.

by Anonymousreply 33May 13, 2021 12:00 AM

R31 is me, OP. Thanks for the suggestions so far. How is St John after Irma?

by Anonymousreply 34May 13, 2021 12:01 AM

Easter 2022 is April 17, so on the later side next year.

Some questions the previous 32 posters should have asked you, OP:

1. Where are you traveling from? (Will determine how long the trip will take you)

2. What do you want to do-- just lie on a beach or do you want to do sightseeing too?

3. Are you going for a full week? Two weeks? Long weekend?

4. Do you speak Spanish, French or Dutch?

5. How much are you looking to spend per night?

6. Do you want a hotel? A villa? A resort hotel?

7. Who is "we"? You and your husband? An entire family group?

8. How old are you?

by Anonymousreply 35May 13, 2021 12:03 AM

Well LA DI DA, R33.

Braggadoccio.

by Anonymousreply 36May 13, 2021 12:06 AM

I'd second Saint Vincent for an unusual vacation.

Thank for responding OP

In that case, I'd look into where there are direct flights from London.

Puerto Rico has great beaches and because it's part of the US, it's easy in general once you leave the beach. There are two islands off the coast-- Vieques and Culebra that are great, though you'd likely need to rent a villa--hotels are smallish. But lots of beaches where you'll be the only ones there and a real "away from it all" vibe. If you stay on the main island, Old San Juan is a bit touristy but still a fun night out and very well restored. There's also a great national park called El Yunque with hiking but not sure how well it's recovered from Hurricane Maria

Barbados has some beautiful resorts and is more old school English than some of the other islands. Some old sugar plantations to visit in the interior

Aruba is a desert island, so no rain, but it's a lot of big resort hotels. Still, in April, the no rain piece may be worth it and you can find a smaller or more upscale hotel.

Turks and Caicos is also great-very safe, beautiful beaches, hotels are smaller and more upscale. Not much in the way of sightseeing though other than snorkeling or those "Swim with the Sting Rays" type tours.

by Anonymousreply 39May 13, 2021 12:36 AM

The Sandy Lane in Barbados is where all the British royals stay.

^^Parrot Cay is the place we stayed in T&C, though that was with my parents/family about seven years ago. Was really nice, private, amazing service. Depending on exchange rate, it may come close to your £1K/day

by Anonymousreply 41May 13, 2021 12:40 AM

WHET to Montserrat? Did she ever spring new life after the volcano?

by Anonymousreply 42May 13, 2021 12:40 AM

'Turks and Caicos is also great-very safe, beautiful beaches, hotels are smaller and more upscale. Not much in the way of sightseeing though other than snorkeling or those "Swim with the Sting Rays" type tours.'

This sounds promising as we both love snorkelling. Is Grace Bay the best place to stay or is there something more off the beaten track? We've been to Barbados already and stayed on the west coast near Holetown. We walked along the coast and saw Sandy Lane's beach and fancy sunbeds.

Will check out your other suggestions too, thank you.

by Anonymousreply 43May 13, 2021 12:40 AM

No one mentioned Grenada. I know a hurricane hit it some time ago, has it recovered at all? My British military family actually lived there back in the 1700's and I'd love to go look up gravestones, if they still exist.

by Anonymousreply 44May 13, 2021 12:48 AM

Yes R43/OP -- Grace Bay is where all of the main hotels are and they are all sort of right next to each other as you walk along the beach, though they are there because it's a beautiful beach with relatively calm waters.

Parrot Cay where we were was off the beaten path some, though not very far from Grace Bay-- maybe 20-30 minutes by taxi

I'm looking at Tripadvisor now and there's an Aman hotel that's also off the beaten path, but it appears to be crazy expensive, like $2K/night or more.

by Anonymousreply 45May 13, 2021 12:54 AM

Isla Bonita

by Anonymousreply 46May 13, 2021 1:07 AM

Mustique or Cuba...both incredibly lovely in very different ways.

by Anonymousreply 47May 13, 2021 5:07 AM

Aman hotels are ridiculously expensive.

by Anonymousreply 48May 13, 2021 3:13 PM

Gilligan's Island. Please! I'm old and alone.

by Anonymousreply 49May 13, 2021 4:54 PM

Sorry, Tina, your island is somewhere near Hawaii.

by Anonymousreply 50May 13, 2021 5:48 PM

I love T&C Grace Bay. Also try St Martin French side-- check out a little boutique hotel right on the sand called Bleu Emeraude.

by Anonymousreply 51May 13, 2021 5:52 PM

Try Miquelon - it's [italic]divine[/italic]in January.

by Anonymousreply 52May 14, 2021 1:42 AM

The.Grenadines

by Anonymousreply 53May 14, 2021 3:23 AM

Vieques

by Anonymousreply 54May 14, 2021 3:30 AM

gillian's island

by Anonymousreply 55May 14, 2021 3:48 AM

Curaçao, Turks & Caicos, Antigua, St. Lucia

All have five-star resorts on the beach, some of them all-inclusive.

Avoid: Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas. We’ve been to all three and they can be hostile to gay couples. USVI and Caymans seemed rundown to me. St. Martin, both sides, is pretty ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 56May 14, 2021 3:59 AM

I second Anguilla, or Barbados if you can afford Sandy Lane which is heaven. T&C Grace Bay is way too overdeveloped and too many families; I made the mistake of going there instead of Parrot Key, don’t do the same.

by Anonymousreply 57May 14, 2021 4:21 AM

*Cay Jesus h Christ auto correct

by Anonymousreply 58May 14, 2021 4:40 AM
St. Martin, both sides, is pretty ghetto.

You can say the same about all the Caribbean islands, R56, including the 4 you mentioned at the top, once you go outside those five-star resorts.

by Anonymousreply 59May 14, 2021 5:20 PM

R59 True, but you won't get gay bashed in them. In Jamaica, DR, and Bahamas, you're on your own.

St. Martin feels safer than many islands, but the poverty is front and center, which makes me uncomfortable. Yeah, yeah, I know. But if I'm shelling out thousands of dollars for a vacation, I don't want bad vibes. I've been to Punta Cana twice, once I booked, another by friends after I objected. The employees of the resorts really lay it on thick about how poor their families are and how rich we are. Bitch, I'm not rich!

by Anonymousreply 60May 14, 2021 8:07 PM

I would go to Vieques, especially to support after the hurricane a few years back. Sounds like the W Hotel would be a good fit for you. Be sure to rent a 4WD.
