It's not called "Ελληνικό Πάσχα", OP.

Do they hunt for Baklava instead of eggs?!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 2, 2021 9:43 AM |
Is it also Russian Orthodox Easter?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 2, 2021 9:45 AM |
R2. What's wrong with saying Καλό Ελληνικό Πάσχα? It's Greek Easter today.
R4. Yes, it's Orthodox Easter, but I'm Greek, so I referred to it as Greek Easter. I'm allowed.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 2, 2021 9:50 AM |
Not judging, r6. Just curious.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 2, 2021 9:51 AM |
R4. R7. Sorry for the "I'm allowed" comment. It wasn't meant for you; it was meant for R2.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 2, 2021 9:55 AM |
No worries, r9!

The official greeting is: Καλό Πάσχα. Easter in Greece is a 4-day public holiday, starting 30 April until 4 May.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 2, 2021 9:58 AM |
R4 Yes, it is also Russian Orthodox Easter.

R1 - it's Easter all over the Orthodox world. My roommate was baptized Orthodox by her Romanian father with the name taken from the day of St. Andrew on November 30th. She is an atheist but keeps the holiday just for tradition. Her great-grandmother was from Thessaloniki. We went along with the traditions for fun (well, we would have travelled but still waiting for the second jab). We made avogolemono soup and a spiced lamb shoulder in the oven with Serbian pilaf rice. We used red and brown onion peels and stuck a four leaf clover on them and wrapped them in (crazy) nylon from pantyhose and they came out beautiful.
I had to go buy lavender water and spray her this morning and we knocked the eggs together for breakfast. The church was beautifully decorated in white gauze and then, at midnight, all was removed and hundreds of lights came on over the gorgeous Greek icons. We are having wine and a pastry called "pasca" at 5. Yesterday we walked around and dancers were in traditional wear and some crafts sold at the market were just beautiful. Got some painted wooden eggs and traditional "ie" shirt for men for my 2 exes. Next year, if we are still here, we said we hope to go to Greece for the holiday.

You'll never hear anyone in Greece saying that, r6.

R11. I know the greeting is "Kalo Pascha." I'm well aware of the full holiday. I simply added the word "Greek" in the headline for the benefit of the DL reader, many of whom may have already celebrated Christian Easter on April 5. I was simply distinguishing the two different Easters and pointing out the difference for those who are not Greek. Sheesh. Have a good day.

[quote]—Thanks-I'm here all week-try the veal :)
Hey, shouldn't that be lamb?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 2, 2021 10:13 AM |
R15. See R16. Have a piece of baklava and chill.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 2, 2021 10:13 AM |
For those of you who are Greek, what's the best place in Greece to see a traditional Easter?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 2, 2021 10:15 AM |
R8, those buns are not Greek! Aren't Greek buns hairy?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 2, 2021 10:20 AM |
R19. The top Greek destinations for a special Easter in the link below. But the most explosive place is the island of Chios known for its fireworks.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 2, 2021 10:23 AM |
R21. Not all.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 2, 2021 10:30 AM |
R22 - thank you! We will absolutely go as soon as it opens up and we are vaxxed. It's hot in summer, but being so close and since she has Greek roots and I love the food, all things Ancient Greece, we will go.
Also admit that the hairy buns mentioned by R8 are a main attraction for me.

R19 For tradition in the truest sense: Athos. Can also experience Easter there in the non-Greek Orthodox monasteries. Just remember you're there as a pilgrim, not a tourist.

Stop that on this holy day bitch!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 2, 2021 10:56 AM |
I think you mean R28.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 2, 2021 11:11 AM |
Will the Orthodox please get on the Gregorian calendar already?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 2, 2021 2:24 PM |
It's only been around 439 years, R31, they don't want to rush into any changes.
Any religion with "Orthodox" in its name (Jewish, Christian, whatever) will have weird calendars, long repetitive services, and be governed by bearded old men in long black robes.

Only one side of my family is Greek, so we celebrated both Greek Easter and White People's Easter (as one relative used to call it.)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 2, 2021 4:28 PM |
So to celebrate the holiday, should we be Greek active or Greek passive?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 2, 2021 5:28 PM |
^^You should be versatile.

გილოცავთ აღდგომა საქართველოში ასევე!
It's Easter in Sakartvelo (Georgia) too :)
