I've been loving reading all about Joan Crawford and her kids. I was thinking about some others, like Gary Cooper's daughter Maria (who I found has her own website). Someone mentioned Robert Taylor's kids, so I looked them up (and the son doesn't look anything like his father - see pic). Are any of you descended from a movie actor or know someone who is? How has it affected their life?
Great idea for a thread. I am not, but there's gotta be some on here who are.
Spill bitches!

I read up more on Gary Cooper's daughter, Maria. She married the concert pianist Byron Janis and is a painter herself. She was best friends with Ingrid Bergman's daughter Pia growing up. That surprised me, because I thought Pia had been left back in Sweden with her father. Maria often lectures on Hollywood and growing up there, sometimes with Jack Benny's daughter, Joan. Maria is now 83 and never had any children. One interview with her talked about her father's affair with Patricia Neal and how Maria and her mother eventually forgave her and became her friends.

Reading about Spencer Tracy today. He had two children, a son John and a daughter Louise "Susie". John was born deaf, later had polio and then became blind! Yet, he had sons John and Joseph, and four grandchildren. I couldn't figure out if Susie had married or not, but she is still living at age 88. There is a picture of Spencer's great-grandson Shane (see below) - it would be so interesting to have an ancestor who was in the movies, especially in so many classics! Surprisingly, Susie worked with Katherine Hepburn on a documentary about her father.

Tyrone Power, I think perhaps the prettiest man ever, had a step-daughter, two daughters of his own, and a posthumous son. Here is a nice website about his children and grandchildren. I didn't know that his step-daughter by Annabella had married Oscar Werner. Or that his daughter Taryn was once married to Soupy Sales' son! What a connection.

A striking photo of Tyrone Power's grandson, Yari Carrisi. It's interesting how many descendants of movie stars have ended up living in Europe, rather than the US. Yari's sister Ylenia disappeared from New Orleans in 1994 and has not been seen since. I had never heard of that before.

I read the old DL threads about Bette Davis' nasty daughter B.D. and I don't think there's much to be added there. It's interesting that Bette's two grandsons don't really have any internet exposure, at least not that identifies them as her progeny. Maybe they're still mad at her for cutting them out of her will (although that could hardly be their fault). I wonder if they're involved in their mom's church or not.
And what about adopted daughter Margot? Is she still living? Strange that she was cut out of the will. I'm guessing that Bette left the money to her adopted son Michael with the proviso that he take care of her.

Fantastic idea for a thread!
Are any descendants of Rita Hayworth, Norma Shearer, Richard Carlson, Mary Pickford,Greer Garson etc so many questions like these spring to mind now that I think about this question.
Of course also as an additional point there are some movie stars who have no bloodlines or family lines continuing for various reasons eg Barbara Stanwyck, Greata Garbo, Raquel Welch unless her son makes her a grandmother but thus so far the signs are not hopeful, Liza Minnelli and also Angie Dickinson whose only child and daughter sadly died.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 1, 2021 2:48 AM |
R8 from what I've read about Bette throughout the years Michael has basically been Margot's guardian for ages. I have a feeling Bette verbally told Michael to do that in her fashion and left well enough alone in her Will. Bette Davis didn't really have immense wealth and Michael is an attorney (maybe retired by now for all one should know).
Bette Davis supported her whole family. Her mother, sister, children. B.D. has a mentally ill son but I don't know anything about the other one. She's crazy that B.D. with her Baby Jane looking Fundie self.

R14 Well, I can't imagine Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Fay were great parents, either. I feel sorry for those adopted kids of Hollywood stars, they were mostly adopted to be an accessory IMO. Barbara Stanwyck is one of my favorite actresses, but I don't think motherhood suited her.
Surprised that no one's mentioned Tina Cassini yet, daughter of Oleg Cassini and Gene Tierney. I wonder if their other daughter Daria is still alive. Gene Tierney contracted measles when she met a fan (who was supposed to be quarantining!!!) and Daria was born mentally retarded and blind.

R14 /R15/ R36 Barbara Stanwyck was separated from her brother at a very early age. She remembered him calling her name while he was taken to live with other relatives and how heartbroken she was. This makes me wonder if the story is true of her 'abandoning' her adopted son. Perhaps he abandoned her.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 3, 2021 4:58 PM |
Barbara Stanwyck had the most miserable childhood you can imagine. Her mother died when she was very young and soon after her father abandoned the family so she lived in horrible foster homes, dropped out of school around 6th grade and worked in menial jobs as a young teenager, until she became a chorus girl. It's no surprise that she had no idea how to be a mother.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 3, 2021 8:17 PM |
R65 R66 Yeah, I personally just think that Barbara Stanwyck was probably not going to be a great mother, regardless. As much as Jennifer Aniston gets shit for not having children (at least from the tabloids), I think a lot of actresses from the previous eras would have been much better off if it was easier to "embrace" not having children. Of course tons of people who have kids probably shouldn't have them, but a lot of people still do because of social and societal pressures. It's too bad that in the case of Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, etc. it just didn't work out. Adopting children is difficult, in some ways it might be more difficult than having biological children. If you're not well equipped to be a mother in the first place, of course adoption and THAT bonding process would be doubly hard.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 3, 2021 8:46 PM |
True r67. Back in those days a woman HAD to be a wife and mother. It was a societal expectation. So you had actresses like Stanwyck, Crawford and Bette Davis who really should've never had children try and do the motherhood thing. Of course, the results were terrible.
Katharine Hepburn didn't give into the pressure, she knew she would've been a terrible mother and never regretted not having children.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 3, 2021 9:03 PM |
Maria Cooper objects to those who criticize Christina. Clearly she knows what she went through with Joan. Maria feels that she was one of the lucky few. She had a fabulous childhood due to the love and support of her parents and their wealth and connections.
