Internet Goes into Meltdown After Dionne Warwick Questions Icon Status of Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton

Dionne must be sundowning again.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 23, 2021 7:55 PM |
The more time passes, the more I'm convinced that Dionne really was playing herself in Got 2B Real.

I thought she was still in London condoling the BRF. She’s such a busy giver.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 23, 2021 8:02 PM |
I would consider Mariah iconic. I didn't really listen to her music, but there's no denying she was huge throught the 1990s and seemed to have hit after hit after hit. Her music videos were also widely watched.
Toni Braxton had some success but she seemed more lower tier. 🤷♂️
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 23, 2021 8:03 PM |
I really hope this ends in a catfight in a lily pond. My money would be on Mariah.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 23, 2021 8:09 PM |
In what world is Brandy more of an icon (and a better singer) than Beyonce and Mariah? She may be a very popular Miss Congeniality-type among Black Hollywood, but she has one shared hit with Monica and a Disney movie that a coked to the gills Whitney Houston stole out from under her.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 23, 2021 8:14 PM |
Mariah was a wonder at the start. Who can sing like that?

Miss Warwick rules!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 23, 2021 8:31 PM |
She's right about Toni, but Mariah has sold a ton more records in the US and worldwide than Dionne has.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 23, 2021 8:36 PM |
Mariah can hit the notes, but it takes more than that (and more than just a lot of hits) to be a great singer.
I'd like to see Mariah try to make some sense out of "Promises, Promises" the way Dionne could.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 23, 2021 8:37 PM |
Dionne's mad because Mariah is more successful than her precious Whitney.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 23, 2021 8:39 PM |
She spoke the truth. She wouldn’t dare to say that about Madonna because Cunty Madge is way above her level

[quote] Dionne's mad because Mariah is more successful than her precious Whitney
More successful than Whitney? Please. 85% of this bitch's hit singles were earned through dishonest practices like selling her CD singles for 50 cents. Whitney Houston never had to resort to that kind of desperation just for some bullshit "most number one singles" record.
Mariah is a fake ass hippo who shrieks like a rabid hyena in heat.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 23, 2021 8:58 PM |
Mariah is iconic and oftentimes has a sense of humor about her public persona. She took ghastly care of her voice throughout the years and her voice has aged horribly as a result but I still root for the gal just all the same.
Toni Braxton has a lovely alto and is a naturally pretty lady whose had tasteful work throughout the years. That's how you do a bit of plastic surgery and general dermatology work, you just do a bit delicately throughout the years. She's going through a mid life crisis but she's was low key at the height of her fake. A well kept alto will always work but she's no icon.
Brandy is nothing. She's sounds like Dionne now (and Dionne is in her 80's, right?). All gravely and whiskey soaked. She also has a horrible hairline and has aged to be a stick thin alien looking creature. Some people say she's the "vocal Bible" but that's nonsense. Brandy got lucky career wise for some time but she'll be forgotten.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 23, 2021 9:01 PM |
R8 Sorry but no. Brandy had a lot of hits back in the 90's, probably more than Tony Braxton.
I agree that she is not in the same cathegory than Mariah or Beyonce
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2021 9:03 PM |
Brandy did not have more hits than Toni Braxton. Toni was more successful and more acclaimed as a talented singer. Toni could actually sing. Brandy had such a boring, wispy voice she made Janet Jackson sound like Jessye Norman in comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 23, 2021 9:09 PM |
ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART would know that such pettiness is unwarranted and unnecessary. I wonder what goes on in her head that Dionne felt like she had to stir things up?
I'd suggest we SAY A LITTLE PRAYER for Dionne Warwick, how does she not know that both Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton have a lot of devoted fans?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2021 9:10 PM |
There's a reason why Brandy turned to a UPN sitcom ("Moesha") in the late '90s.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2021 9:12 PM |
I'm black and I think Brandy is big in our community because a lot of us grew up with her. Moesha was huge for us in our childhoods, the Cinderella movie still gets played a lot, and the Brandy doll sold well.
Musically however, her contributions are vastly overrated (and the 'vocal bible' thing mostly comes from her). Even Monica has had more #1 hits and Grammy nominations. Brandy also seems extremely unstable and kind of egotistical.
Mariah is definitely an icon, can't really argue with that one. As someone else said, Toni Braxton was quite low key during her biggest years of music success, and off the radio was mostly famous for being terrible with money. She certainly has some iconic looks and videos though ("You're Makin Me High", "He Wasn't Man Enough").
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 23, 2021 9:19 PM |
Didn't Aretha cover Toni's "You Makin' Me High" in many of her concerts?

R25 you have no understanding of music or musicianship.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 23, 2021 9:25 PM |
Even Dionne basically said that Toni wouldn't consider herself an icon. She's a beautiful, talented artist that made some great songs and videos. That's not the same as an icon.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 23, 2021 9:28 PM |
Mariah's music is downright awful (besides We Belong Together), let's be honest. She still has a great voice though.

Dionne never fails to put down other people. She is a DL Icon.

That really is a moronic statement.
Her catalog, chart history, sales history, current radio/streaming play/royalty payments and other forms of empirical data prove that to be blatantly wrong.
Moreover--and perhaps more importantly---her style of singing (whether you like it or not) influenced (and continues to influence) and entire generation (and generations) of singers who try (emphasis on the word "TRY") to emulate her vocal and performance style.

The original Got 2 B Real cast basically nailed the icons: Aretha, Patti, Dionne, Diana, Chaka, Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce, Rihanna.
If you wanted to cast a wider net: Janet Jackson, Gladys Knight, Donna Summer should be in there too.
And despite both being certifiable lunatics nowadays, Anita Baker is a more iconic alto chanteuse than Toni and Lauryn Hill is a more iconic 90s girl-wonder than Brandy.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 23, 2021 9:45 PM |

R32 Chart history doesn't mean shit in the long run. Do you really think people in 100 years are going to be listening to 'We Belong Together?. Aretha, Whitney, and Dionne all have more staying power. Mariah is the biracial Debby Boone.

R35 The late Phyllis Hyman was criminally underrated. She was the full package from top to bottom and back again. Gorgeous range, face, and body.
Clive Davis dropped Angela Bofill and Phyllis Hyman basically when he was grooming Whitney Houston for stardom along with Cissy's guidance. That man had a trio of well rounded talent and didn't know what to do with it. Phyllis was a hot mess sadly and Angela was a hippie deep down but still.

None of them are icons
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 24, 2021 3:41 AM |
Phyllis Hyman was exquisite. Unfortunately she had drug/alcohol and mental health issues. And yes, Clive Davis did her no favors. He was so obsessed with making Whitney Houston a crossover pop star that he neglected other artists on his label.

r64 Mariah Carey is now 51 years old. You must be old if yourself if you don't know any millennials who are Mariah stans or "lambs", her music passed down to that generation years ago. Also, Ariana Grande has now passed down Mariah's music to a whole new generation Z. All I Want For Christmas and Hero will be covered and played long after Mariah kicks the bucket, without question.

#2. Taylor Swift - 190M
#3. Nicki Minaj - 129M
#4. Mariah Carey - 123M

Sales and hit songs aren't the only thing that makes one an icon. Sometimes it doesn't even matter. If you'd watched the entire clip, Dionne explained that. She said Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn are all icons even though they didn't have a big catalog of hit songs. She said if you said their names to anyone today, people would know who they were. And she's absolutely right.

However she has a more legitimate claim to being called one than Brandy Minnie Mouse Norwood and that hoodrat Mary J "My singing is even flatter than my non-existent bosom" Blige. MJB is overrated beyond belief and should get down on her knees and thank her stars she lucked into a successful musical career. Otherwise this tacky bitch would be asking "You want fries with that?" in some Burger King in Newark or offering toothless BJs to prospective johns in the ghetto.

Brandy is NOTHING. The only thing she's remembered for is killing someone in traffic.
Mariah Carey is unquestionably an icon. She took a particular vocal style, made it mainstream and spawned hundreds of copycats that still try to ape her to this day.
And Dionne is most definitely an icon. She survived in the business for over 50 years and her songs are timeless.

Correct--you cannot compare the era of streaming to physical sales. Physical sales were much more significant. When you purchased a song or an album, you were making an actual committment. Streaming is like a combo of airplay and buying music. Madonna's sales will probaly never be topped. The only artistfrom the 90s onwards that has a chance of overtaking her is Eminem.

If Brandy had of continued to act she'd be in a very different place right now.
[quote]Dionne and Madonna are both below Mariah in sales and miles behind Rihanna.
It's not all about sales. At a certain point many of these people have gone on to film/tv/fashion and increased their public popularity. Madonna is an Icon but I'd say she's also famous just for being "Madonna" at this point. The same applies to Lady Gaga.
And to be fair, looking at Dionne's actual quotes, she said she doesn't know enough about Mariah to make a judgement on how Iconic she is and she doesn't think Toni would want to be an Icon and that's not something she's striving for.

To me the status of icon is measured in how influential an artist is on other artists. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston definitely influenced singing styles of those who came after them in the 90s and 2000s. Toni Braxton was a collaboration effort, Toni/Babyface/LA Reid were were majorly influential on the music industry, like Janet Jackson and Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis. These people were driving forces of music and made HITS that people will never forget and will reference forever.

So basically... "I don't know her".

To me, "iconic" means representing a certain era. As such, Warwick and Madonna are definitely iconic. Braxton is not. Can't really say about Mariah.

Well, in a time where Karen Olivo has been referred to in print as an iconic Broadway actress, I'm pretty sure the meaning of the word will never be understood again.

Toni Braxton: Not an icon. Going bankrupt 2X didn't help her image. Cool to have a low, sultry, distinctive voice, though.
Brandy: Another low voice, less of an icon than Toni Braxton.
Mariah Carey: Yes, an icon. But her songs just don't have the complexity & sophistication of Dionne's songs in the Bacharach period. Some of Dionne's songs, like Alfie & Valley of the Dolls (Where do I go) are just a punch in the stomach, so touching.

I like looking at Spotify streams when these discussions come about. Dionne's music is 20-30 years older than the other ones so it's understandable that she has less listeners. Still 3.1 million people listen to her monthly. That's pretty good.
Spotify monthly listeners:
Whitney Houston= 20.5 million Madonna= 15.8 million Mariah Carey= 14.4 million Mary J. Blige- 7.1 million Brandy= 4.6 million Toni Braxton= 3.8 million Dionne Warwick= 3.1 Million

Looks to me like Miss Dionne has had some 'work' done. The old nose was entering Wayland & Madame territory.

What exactly is Dionne Warwick famous for again?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 25, 2021 4:46 AM |
She's a psychic with a lot of friends or something.

Even if we stick with the dictionary definitions of "Iconic" ie. "widely recognized and well-established" and/or "widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence," I think it's pretty clear that Dionne and Mariah fit the bill.
Only Whitney had a better voice than Mariah at her height and even that's arguable. Few could ever touch Mariah Carey hitting that G7 and some say live F7#. Her vocal range was once recognized as being more broad than any of her contemporaries. While her music may not be as complex or (with the exception of, "All I Want For Christmas is You" and maybe "Hero,") as memorable, she will always be remembered for that.

I bet Miss Dionne thinks Luther "I am a girl group!" Vandross was an icon. I bet if he was still alive they'd be reading bitches all day on Twitter
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 25, 2021 3:00 PM |
R22 she did that because she was going after that triple threat status (don't ask me what the third threat was) that many "entertainers" want ... but also, she had started out in the biz as an actress before her success as a singer (she was in the short-lived sitcom "Thea" in the early 90s).
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 25, 2021 3:19 PM |
Luther was an icon of sorts. He was our own black, gay, fat Neely O'Hara and we never appreciated him until it was too late.

There multi top tiers when it comes to Pop legendary status.
Tier 1 1: highest level of recognition and legendary icons whose names are discussed countlessly in curriculum and history: Madonna, Elvis, Presley, and the Beatles. Madonna name has been taught in many MBA marketing classes across the world.
Tier 2: Aretha Franklin, Barbra, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Queens, Tina Turner
Tier 3: Elton Jones, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Cindi Lauper
Tier: 99: Jessica Simpson, Justin Bier, and millions of singers all over the world
by Anonymous | reply 137 | April 25, 2021 8:56 PM |
Oh honey, your Tier 3 is clogged with a bunch of people who don't deserve to be anywhere near there, such as Janet and Cyndi. They're more like Tier 10.
And there are several people in your Tier 2 that should be moved down such as Tina, Bob Dylan and possibly Aretha.
Also, your spelling is atrocious.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | April 25, 2021 8:59 PM |
r137 Michael Jackson must be alone in Tier 0 then, he is still the most recognized and influential pop music artist
by Anonymous | reply 139 | April 25, 2021 8:59 PM |
Michael Jackson, the Beatles and Elvis are tier 0. Madonna, Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd are Tier 1. Tier 2 would be Elton, Mariah, Whitney, Celine. Tier 3 would be Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Metallica, Nirvana, Tier 4 would be Britney and some others.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | April 25, 2021 9:42 PM |
U2 and The Rolling Stones should be in tier 2.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | April 25, 2021 9:44 PM |
Britney belongs in Tier 17.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 25, 2021 10:53 PM |
Yes, the only reason Britney is an icon is because there are so many fucking idiots under 40.

Hey, y'all, Auntie DIonne here again, taking a break from being the Queen Of Twitter to check in with my DL Gays.
Trivia: Fuck Phyllis, they actually referred to me as Dionne Hymen cuz I was unbreakable. Now, that's iconic.
Use #Dionne'sUnbreakableHymen so I can see your replies.

Toni Braxton doesn't qualify as an icon. Mariah arguably does. The word "icon" has become completely overused, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | April 26, 2021 1:07 AM |
I think Queen is probably up there in icon status. Their music is really popular on streaming websites, probably the most popular band in terms of streaming from the 20th century. Plus there are a few iconic moments from their career that everyone remembers.
I think I would go The Beatles, then Michael Jackson, then Elvis, then Queen, followed by the Rolling Stones.
Beyond that I don't know.
There are so many icons who made it to the A-list: Elton John, Bob Marley, Madonna, Whitney, Aretha, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Tina Turner, Bowie, Prince, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, etc. It's just a matter of preference how you rank them. Like this being a gay site, of course Madonna is considered a giant icon, but on a classic rock forum she would not be considered that highly.
