by Anonymousreply 10April 22, 2021 8:47 PM

I'm Mama's "funny" neighbor who thought Bubba looked good going or coming and would leer at him through the drapes whenever he did yard work... You never saw me on the show, but I was there

I'm pastel overalls, I'm part of the failed attempt to 'fem' Sonia up.

by Anonymousreply 32April 22, 2021 10:35 PM

[quote]I'm the tooth pick that killed Aunt Fran.

I've told you and told you, she died of NATURAL CAUSES!

by Anonymousreply 33April 22, 2021 10:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 56April 22, 2021 11:22 PM

I'm little Eugene Meechum, queen in training

by Anonymousreply 67April 22, 2021 11:37 PM

I'm Alberta Meacham, the minister's wife, who despises Mama for being popular with the church ladies. I will do anything to make her look bad, including running her bff Iola against her for church ladies president.

I'm also the only one on the show who speaks with an authentic Southern accent.

by Anonymousreply 68April 22, 2021 11:40 PM

[quote]Did Vint's & Naomi's basement love nest have a bathroom? Or did they have to upstairs to use the bathroom?

I'd like to think they had a bathroom down there...

Vint was always coming up the stairs after having shaved and Naomi appeared in the kitchen beautifully coifed...

Besides the whole family was trapped down there the year that Tornado came through on Thanksgiving

by Anonymousreply 69April 22, 2021 11:42 PM

I'm Carol Burnett wondering how my beautifully written, poignant, and character-driven sketches morphed into a broadly and poorly written tasteless sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 70April 22, 2021 11:44 PM

[quote]Did Vint's & Naomi's basement love nest have a bathroom? Or did they have to upstairs to use the bathroom?

They had a bathroom in the basement.

Naomi used to talk about going downstairs for a "hot steamy shower"

by Anonymousreply 71April 22, 2021 11:44 PM

Vernette didn't real look all that "recovered"

But thoughtful Bubba was kind enough to break his date with the bitchy girl and go with Vernette anyway

[quote] I'm Carol Burnett wondering how my beautifully written, poignant, and character-driven sketches morphed into a broadly and poorly written tasteless sitcom.

After you turned a role I won a Tony for into a stumbling, bumbling drunk just like your actual parents, I wouldn't complain if I were you. At least your show lasted more than a month even with you barely in it. I did a girl's school show first, but then Charlotte fucking Rae does one too and hers is a hit while mine dies on the vine after four weeks!

by Anonymousreply 87April 23, 2021 12:54 AM

Those sketches were just loud and maudlin, not poignant.

I'm The Bonecrushers!

by Anonymousreply 92April 23, 2021 1:02 AM

I'm Brandon Tartikoff struggling to find the right time slot for this show. We had to push it back from its fall premiere to make room for [italic]Taxi[/italic], but where should I put it? Should I put it after [italic]Silver Spoons[/italic] since the dad on that show is actually named Higgins for real? Maybe I should put it on after [italic]Gimme A Break![/italic] since Nell's character also has the last name Harper. I know what: I'll try putting it with [italic]Bosom Buddies[/italic] reruns. Anything is better than that stupid orangutan show with Leonard Frey.

Ah, screw it. Off to first-run syndication for you. Now to give Rue and Betty a call…

by Anonymousreply 93April 23, 2021 1:03 AM

I'm Allan Kayser's acting ability that got worse and his jeans got tighter.

by Anonymousreply 94April 23, 2021 1:05 AM

I'm the failed sitcom "Teachers Only" starring Lynn Redgrave that was paired with "Mama's Family" on Saturday nights in its one-season network run. I, unlike "Mama's Family," will never find new life in syndication.

by Anonymousreply 95April 23, 2021 1:08 AM

I’m the underwear that Allan Kayser never wore underneath his skintight jeans.

by Anonymousreply 96April 23, 2021 1:10 AM

I'm Thelma's giant fridge from the NBC seasons.

by Anonymousreply 97April 23, 2021 1:10 AM

I'm the other Higgins … the one from [italic]Magnum P.I.[/italic] I won the ratings race on Thursday night at 8:00 PM/7:00 PM central that season only to be bested by [italic]The Cosby Show[/italic] and [italic]Family Ties[/italic] next season, so I suppose turnabout is fair play.

by Anonymousreply 98April 23, 2021 1:13 AM

I met Allan Kayser at a convention in New Jersey a few years ago and he could not have been a nicer, more down to earth guy. I snuck in a mention about the tight jeans and he said that he was aware of his gay fanbase and that they’ve mentioned that topic to him a time or two.

by Anonymousreply 99April 23, 2021 1:13 AM

I'm the divorce between Carol and Joe Hamilton that ensured Eunice would seldom appear. He got the new show and she got the old one.

by Anonymousreply 100April 23, 2021 1:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 101April 23, 2021 1:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 105April 23, 2021 1:20 AM

I'm [italic]The Scarlett Letter[/italic], the book Thelma does a report on when she goes back to high school. At least she couldn't cheat by watching that terrible Demi Moore movie since it didn't exist yet.

by Anonymousreply 106April 23, 2021 1:20 AM

I’m Mama’s silver, pawned by Vint the loser so that he could post bail for his even bigger loser friend Claude Cainmaker aka Juliette Lewis’s dad.

by Anonymousreply 107April 23, 2021 1:22 AM

I'm the talking parrot.

by Anonymousreply 108April 23, 2021 1:23 AM

[quote] Were there any gay characters?

I’m inclined to believe that soft spoken Buzz was gay. He and Bubba (the latter, fresh from reform school and ordinarily straight but not averse to a little walk on the wild side every now and then) could have been kissin’ cousins, with Bubba telling Buzz never to mention anything about their secret little get togethers in the attic.

by Anonymousreply 153April 23, 2021 3:14 PM

All the remaining mainstay characters had drastic overhauls from Network to Syndication.

Syndicated Mama was livelier and had more of a sense of humor than Network Mama (although she did begin to soften in season 2 of the NBC run). Season 1 Network Mama would never have participated in many of the hijinks that Syndicated Mama reveled in (“Dirty Dancing” included).

Syndicated Vint was a loveable goof who, while sometimes self-serving, he generally wouldn’t hurt a fly. Network Vint was the consummate loser and a misogynist, prone to bouts of egomania (see the “Amateur Night” episode), theft (“Mama’s Silver”), and who had a knack for being taken in by schemers and floozies.

Syndicated Naomi was a curly haired, bubbly husband-pleaser with an often high-pitched squeal of a voice and an overly-dramatic way of phrasing things (“As for you, Vinton Harper, it is goodbye FOREVER!”). Network Naomi was a sleazy broad. A Redneck Barbie with a lower-register country twang who, like her syndicated counterpart, had been married several times, but who was not above having a beer with and later shagging a guy from high school that she’d just reacquainted herself with (in his mother’s basement, no less).

by Anonymousreply 154April 23, 2021 3:36 PM

I'm the ugly little tag Aunt Fran removed from her mother's area rug two years before Thelma burned a hole in it with Naomi's house keys and vacuum cleaner. That drunken asshole judge bellowed at Fran to pin me back on because she doesn't sew, yet she knits. Poor woman wet her panties right there in the courtroom! Fran attempted to pin me back on, but by then Vint had rotated the rug to hide the burn hole. She became frustrated she couldn't find my spot on the rug and took me back upstairs to hide me in her dresser where I remained till she died of natural causes. I eventually just hit the trash can.

The wardrobe designers did excellent work on capturing the personalities of the Harper family. But they missed the mark for Ellen, played by Betty White. Ellen was supposed to be more sophisticated than the rest of the family, so why was she wearing those faded Southern Belle rejects from the 50s? Ken Berry said that the show ended because Vicki Lawrence was over it, but Lawrence said it ended because Lorimar had enough episodes for re-runs and didn't need any more, which seems like a more likely explanation. I love how she just calls Rue "nuts" when talking about other cast members in this interview (starts around 38:47)

by Anonymousreply 272April 24, 2021 8:55 PM

I though Allan Kayser was great, particularly in season 3 when Bubba was fresh out of reform school and hadn't developed into the perfectly-coiffed haired, tight jeans-wearing, literate version of the character. Early Bubba behaved exactly like Eunice (his tantrum at Fran's repass in the first syndicated episode "Farewell Frannie" was classic Eunice). I'm inclined to believe that when he got the role, the producers had him watch tapes of Carol Burnett as the character and told him to mimic her. They obviously changed "Bubba" later on when the character started taking school seriously and wearing tighter jeans, grew his hair out, etc. He even dropped the southern accent as the show went on.

by Anonymousreply 273April 24, 2021 9:03 PM

I haven't watched the interview posted yet at r272 but are there any stories floating around about how the actors got along on set? Or didn't as the case may be. It looks like they had fun filming for the most part, but then looks can be deceiving.

" Some real-life teens just look older. "

Some dissolute teens look older than their age because of smoking, drinking, drugs, etc. But Bubba never looked older in that respect. He always looked like a healthy, well groomed, well nourished MAN. His hair was particularly well tended. It' was obvious he was getting expensive haircuts, maybe even getting it colored. Even for a sitcom that seemed ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 278April 25, 2021 12:43 AM

[quote]Beverly Archer looks great in that recent cast photo.

Not too recent. Ken Berry died in 2018.

by Anonymousreply 279April 25, 2021 1:12 AM

It has been linked here many times before, but the little "reunion special" that Vicki did on her talk show was one of most cringeworthy things I've ever seen. Vicks was a complete bitch to poor Beverly Archer, who by this time was stealing scenes on 'Major Dad'. It was obvious Vicki resented her, so why even have her on the show to berate her? I won't link to it just because of that.

by Anonymousreply 280April 25, 2021 2:27 AM

The cast, besides Vicki, got along great.

Dorothy really did want to date Ken and she moved to some state that Beverly was living in after she recommend it to her.

by Anonymousreply 281April 25, 2021 2:30 AM

It’s funny you say that, because Dorothy really did seem like she was into Ken in her role as Naomi. Granted, she’s an actress and was supposed to look like she wanted him, but it looked a bit too real at times.

by Anonymousreply 282April 25, 2021 2:37 AM

[quote]The cast, besides Vicki, got along great.

I'm not sure if I believe that. I got the impression that it was a very friendly set.

by Anonymousreply 283April 25, 2021 3:14 AM

If you do a search on YouTube for "Mama's Family reunion," you'll get hits for Vicki Lawrence's talk show. She had a reunion on her talk show. Apparently, you can see her being somewhat rude to one or more of her castmates. (I think it was the Iola actress, Beverly Archer. Sad. Iola was such a great character, Vicki should've been grateful for what Beverly Archer brought to the show.)

by Anonymousreply 284April 25, 2021 3:19 AM

Ken Berry was always a cute and likable actor. But the character of Vinton on the original NBC MF was so off putting that even Berry couldn't make him the least bit sympathetic. That version of Vinton was a horror. I remember one episode where he rages and threatens to leave Thelma's house; Fran tells Thelma to let him go, but when she sees he's serious about leaving she wails after him "VINTOOOOON!" It was cringeworthy. ALL the Harpers on the NBC were unsympathetic and ranged from tolerable to unbearable. No wonder the show flopped. They syndicated version had the right idea by dispensing with Fran, Buzz and Sonya and revamping the characters to make them silly and goofy, which went down much better with viewers. And of course the addition of Iola made things even better.

by Anonymousreply 285April 25, 2021 3:32 AM

I thought the Naomi/Vinton pairing was so surprisingly believable. Great chemistry.

[quote] I thought the Naomi/Vinton pairing was so surprisingly believable. Great chemistry.

A quirky pairing, really. IRL, Naomi could have married someone better-looking than Vint. Someone who wasn't residing in Mama's basement. However, I give credit to Dorothy Lyman for making the TV marriage seem plausible.

by Anonymousreply 288April 25, 2021 3:48 AM

I imagine Vicki is very bossy, just like Mama. I went to see her live show, about 15 years ago. She was very good.

by Anonymousreply 289April 25, 2021 3:58 AM

Ken had a nasty divorce and didn't want to get into another relationship but yes, Dorothy totally was into him.

She went onto a great career as a tv director while Archer scored payola with a network show. Vicki had the unsuccessful talk show, Berry pretty much retired and Kayser struggled to get clean from coke.

Wasn't Lymsn the in-house director for The Nanny show?

[quote]t’s funny you say that, because Dorothy really did seem like she was into Ken in her role as Naomi. Granted, she’s an actress and was supposed to look like she wanted him, but it looked a bit too real at times.

Well she did win two Emmys for her soap, but sorry to disappoint but she was recently married right before she was cast. She was married to Vincent Malle a producer and brother of Louis Malle and Candace Bergen was her sister in law.

by Anonymousreply 298April 25, 2021 9:21 AM

She didn't marry Malle until 1987.

by Anonymousreply 299April 25, 2021 10:14 AM

I've only seen an excerpt of the Vicki! MF cast reunion mentioned above but didn't think Vicki was aggressive or unfriendly, though the group did seem kind of awkward. Despite her fond reminiscences, I don't think Vicki was cut out to be a talk show host. In the TV Academy Interview Vicki goes on about how she didn't think the NBC version worked as well and forced writers to re-write one episode in which Thelma was supposed to sleep with her visiting brother-in-law (Season 2, Ep. 20) because it was so out of character. She is very complimentary to Ken/Dorothy/Beverly/Allan and credits them, along with the former Carol Burnett show production staff, with the show's success in first-run syndication, though her insistence that the show could have won Emmys had it been nominated along with network shows in the late '80s seems a bit of a stretch. It is kind of remarkable how this character changed from "The Family" sketches to the "Eunice" TV special to the NBC show to the syndicated version.

by Anonymousreply 300April 25, 2021 1:39 PM

Bitter crone Mama and fun-loving Mama both work for different reasons, and Vicki played both hilariously.

by Anonymousreply 304April 25, 2021 2:24 PM

Berry had been married to Jackie Joseph (Audrey in the original 1960 Corman film Little Shop Of Horrors). She and Ken adopted two special needs kids.

Years and years and YEARS ago, Berry came into town to do The Music Man. Some kids from the studio where I took tap were recruited to be in the show that week. The local choreographer was a pill and didn't want to spend any time with us to show us our routine, so Ken took us aside and spent some time teaching it to us.

Of course I was most charmed by Jackie - who spent most of her time watching her kids and wasn't in the show. She was beautiful and friendly.

When she and Ken divorced, she was a member of the First Wives Club. She and some other "first wives" went on a crusade to shame their exes into giving them more money, etc. They were all on the Phil Donahue Show.

Later she and Ken made up and were friends for their kids - who both died within the last five years or so. JJ is on Facebook and posts a lot and is very friendly. Ken of course.....be dead.

by Anonymousreply 305April 25, 2021 2:24 PM

Bahaha, R303!

by Anonymousreply 306April 25, 2021 3:35 PM

I thought the relationship between Mama and Naomi was very interesting. Although she often threw her best lines at her, Mama was very fond of Naomi and recognized that she had a goodness that none of her other daughters had. She recognized her loyalty and also saw that she was a good match for her son. There seems little doubt that Mama felt closer to Naomi than Eunice or Ellen.

by Anonymousreply 307April 25, 2021 3:51 PM

I bet the show could have at the very least been nominated, Beverly Archer most definitely.

I decided to look at who was nominated in the years that Syndicated Mama's Family was on the air. As a random sampling there is no reason why the show couldn't have competed against Golden Girls, Family Ties, Night Court... There is definitely no reason why Archer and Lyman couldn't have competed with Justine Bateman, Jackee Harry, Estelle Getty and the like.

1989 would have been tougher as it seems that the Emmys were shifting away from videotaped and broader types of sitcoms with Golden Girls still holding on.

[quote] her insistence that the show could have won Emmys.....Only if the only other nominees had been Hee-Haw and Small Wonder.

Oh for Christ's sake Vicki Lawrence was funnier in one episode than Julia Louis Dreyfuss was in the entire laugh free run of "The New Adventures Of Old Christine" and they still threw an Emmy at her.

by Anonymousreply 311April 25, 2021 5:06 PM

Mama's Family was an Emmy winning show. Bob Mackie and Ret Turner won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Series in 1984 and was also nominated in 1983 and 1987.

With the plethora of syndicated programs in the 1980s, I'm surprised they didn't get their own categories. I could've seen the Daytime Emmys making syndicated categories, like how they now have digital categories.

I don't understand those complaining about Bubba's age and how he doesn't look like a teenager. Remember, this is the same show where thirtysomething Vicki Lawrence was playing a senior citizen. They didn't even bother making her up a la Sophia Petrillo. She just put on a cheap, gray wig and glasses. The point is that MAMA'S FAMILY is a wacky sitcom set in a silly town where the people are cartoon characters. You're supposed to suspend disbelief and just go along with it; if you take it too seriously/literally, then the magic wears off. Besides, I don't think Bubba was supposed to be a young teenager. Didn't he get his GED via night school and then attended community college. I think he's supposed to be in his early twenties by the end of the series, while the actor was in his late twenties.

by Anonymousreply 334April 26, 2021 1:16 AM

It’s crazy how Buzz and Sonia were only mentioned once during syndication - in the first syndicated episode, to be exact, and were never mentioned again. By the time Naomi became pregnant in the last season, it was as if Vint’s older kids never existed. He would sometimes talk about becoming a father as if he’d never been one. Had MF gone one more season, it would have been cool if Buzz and Sonia made an appearance just to see how they would’ve interacted with Bubba.

by Anonymousreply 364April 27, 2021 12:29 AM

Betty White did one episode of the syndicated show, and there had been some speculation she didn’t do more because she was on the golden girls, but she said that wasn’t true and she would’ve gladly done more shows but wasn’t asked.

by Anonymousreply 369April 27, 2021 1:09 AM

I kinda liked Sonia's trashy slutty stoner vibe, but she was a bit too contemporary for the time-warp of Raytown. Karin Argoud was a mix of Misha Barton and young Linda Ronstadt. She seems to have aged fairly well, like a prettier version of the actress who played Dorothy in Brooklyn flashbacks on Golden Girls.

Ken Berry really was talented. I heard he lived his last years in a retirement home for celebrities.

by Anonymousreply 393April 28, 2021 3:41 PM

There is a Kansas City suburb named Raytown, but Mama Family appears to have been more Southern than northern Missouri. On the Burnett show, it definitely was Southern.

by Anonymousreply 395April 28, 2021 3:59 PM

Well, according to Vicki Lawrence Raytown was a suburb of Kansas City. I'm sure the accents were just to make them seem that much more rube like.

by Anonymousreply 396April 28, 2021 4:01 PM

Vicki did acknowledge the Kansas City suburb with the same name, but she said the location of their Raytown was never specified, just somewhere in the Bible Belt. That would include Missouri, of course.

I am "Knock-knock!"

[quote]Who was Eunice messing around?

Duke Reeves, of course.

by Anonymousreply 400April 28, 2021 4:54 PM

I love learning little odds and ends about shows I like. Aunt Effie was played by a terrible actress/"dancer" named Dorothy Van, but Van really wasn't valuable to the show for her non-acting abilities. She wrote a lot of the episodes along with her real life husband Jim Evering producing and directing a lot of the later episodes. You can watch his rise up the ladder if you check out the credits at the end of each show. Both Dorothy and Jim are deceased now.

"Duke Reeves" was Joe Hamilton who was then the head honcho and Carol's real life husband at the time. Allegedly, she broke up his first marriage where he had spawned many, many children and then went on to have 4 more with that hussy Carol, before they finally divorced. He's dead now too. You can see a lot of first marriage "Hamilton" children are connected to his shows too according to the credit roll.

One of my favorite episodes had to do with Iola making a new best friend at her cooking class. Her new best friend was played by the wonderful character actress Mary Pat Gleason who sadly also passed away not that long ago. ("How do I get rid of her?")

by Anonymousreply 401April 28, 2021 8:41 PM

Mary Pat Gleason had mental issues.

I’m the Babylonian Roof Garden still waiting for Eunice and Ed to show up.

I bet Bubba knew all the ins and outs of Raytown better than anybody!

by Anonymousreply 408April 28, 2021 10:40 PM

Imagine Iola on Bubba's 18th birthday...

by Anonymousreply 409April 28, 2021 10:42 PM

I'm St. Ray's Memorial Hospital

[quote]Mama and Iola were going to take a cruise down the Ray River on the "Dixie Belle"

It hit all the major port cities. Hinkley, Bundy, and Bump!

by Anonymousreply 411April 28, 2021 11:46 PM

[quote] Raytown was not set in the south, but in the midwest, in Missouri.

Missouri, is where the South and Midwest meet. The Ozarks for instance is very much the South. That is where the Clampetts of the Beverly Hillbillies came from. Mark Twain's stories are set in Missouri yet is considered Southern literature not Midwestern literature. Also, historically Missouri was a slave state that had duel governments, sent soldiers to both sides of the Civil War, and was represented on the flags of the Union and Confederacy. They later had Jim Crow laws.

Also, South and Midwest should be capitalized when speaking of US regions.

I'm Bubba's underwear and nowhere to be seen.

by Anonymousreply 413April 29, 2021 1:21 AM

Bubba jerked off into his socks.

by Anonymousreply 414April 29, 2021 9:36 AM

It would have looked great on my bedroom floor.

by Anonymousreply 415April 29, 2021 3:06 PM

Was Bubba circumcised?

Or did he have a big ol' sensitive hood?

by Anonymousreply 416April 30, 2021 2:19 AM

He was a white male born at some point between 1967 and 1971, so yes... he was probably circumcised. But then again, Ed and Eunice were poor and I think socioeconomics play into the circumcision thing as well.

by Anonymousreply 417April 30, 2021 2:25 AM

Eunice bit it off in a fit of rage.

[quote]Eunice bit it off in a fit of rage.

Totally missed that episode.

And let's pretend it was Ed's foreskin...

by Anonymousreply 419April 30, 2021 1:13 PM

Always remember Eunice has splinters in the windmills of her mind.

by Anonymousreply 420April 30, 2021 2:09 PM

R417 Not really during that time period, it was just standard for boys born in hospitals.

by Anonymousreply 421May 1, 2021 2:03 AM

[quote]it was just standard for boys born in hospitals.

Actually, Bubba was born in the back of an Edsel on Route 5...

by Anonymousreply 422May 1, 2021 8:19 AM

The family hierarchy was changed so often but in one of the CB sketches, Eunice reveals she and Ed got married because they had to to which Mama says something like "welcome to the club". So theoretically, Bubba was the surprise pregnancy and Ellen was Mama's "gift".

by Anonymousreply 423May 1, 2021 6:03 PM

r420 That's a new one, Mama!

I'm male and didn't know that some guys did that until I met my brother-in-law. Sever saw him naked (though would love to!), but he has admitted that as a teen he would use his socks to come into and wipe up with afterward. Silly me, I used paper towels.

by Anonymousreply 425May 5, 2021 8:27 AM

I'm the family documentary Bubba makes for a school project in which Mama comes off looking like a neglectful lush of a mother due to a glitch in editing. 😁😂🤣

by Anonymousreply 426May 8, 2021 1:02 AM

I’m the photo Allen kayser used for the last season of the show because he was tired of the dorky one used for the first 3 seasons.

by Anonymousreply 427May 8, 2021 1:15 AM

R427 is that really why? I've wondered why his was the only one to change in the last season.

During an ill wind when they are trapped in the basement, Mama says who needs the odor eaters. That smell was actually Ant Effie’s snatch odor.

The Documentary and The Love Letter are two of my favorite episodes.

2 cans of chili

1 can of beer

2 strips of beef jerky

1 package of beer nuts

1 snack sized bag of Fritos

by Anonymousreply 434May 8, 2021 10:31 PM

I wouldn't put a PINK tomato in chili

by Anonymousreply 435May 9, 2021 1:18 AM

I’m Iola’s original Mother’s Day poem, "A Mother's Hands."

When I was just a little girl, what was there to brush each curl?

A mother's hands.

What shook the rattle when I said goo-goo?

What bandaged each boo-boo?

A mother's hands.

by Anonymousreply 436May 9, 2021 2:03 AM

I'm everyone's colors. Mama wears blue or purple, Vinton wears tan, Naomi wears yellow, Iola wears pink, and Bubba wears green.
