Which do you prefer? I still take taxis on those rare days that I need a ride. I've never actually tried Uber though, maybe I should.
Taxi or Uber/Lyft?

In general:
Lyft - Friendly, down-to-earth people
Uber - Douchebags, Heterosexuals, Eurotrash

I don't want to be murdered, so I take a taxi. Just like I don't want to meet a serial killer, so I don't use AirBnB

I gladly left cabbies in the dirt when Uber and Lyft came about. I've never seen a marked difference between the drivers and generally choose whichever is cheaper. A lot of them drive for both.
Taxis had a monopoly and they treated people like shit because they could. I've been yelled at for using a credir card, threatened for not wanting to go to an ATM, had a driver call someone and complain about me (while I was in the fucking car) because I was going cross town.
I've only ever had 3 issues with Uber/Lyft and they weren't that bad. A guy who took the long way to drive me home and I emailed customer service with the route "Does this look right to you" and got a refund.
For all the "Safety Sallies", if an Uber/Lyft driver goes insane on you, there's a record of the car and where you were. If a cabby decides to go nuts, you have to hope you have the presence of mind to remember the car's details.
Taxis wouldn't have been hit so hard by Uber and Lyft if they had cared about customer service. They didn't, they've been crushed, I'm not sorry.
