Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon

It's on Amazon Prime. It's actually pretty good. Interesting life. He grew up rich in Beverly Hills and started in showbiz in a thing Buddy Ebsen produced where he danced and sang. "I got to do a Vaudeville sketch thing where I could remove my underpants without removing my clothes." Aha!

"This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location."

If you have Amazon Prime you can watch it for free.

by Anonymousreply 2April 16, 2021 2:55 AM

Not in the US.

It's by notorious by-the-numbers doc maker Jeffrey Schwarz, which means it will tell the story in the dullest, most pedestrian way.

I'm watching it right now (on Long Island). He's actually quite personable and the doc isn't bad at all. The story's good, tracing the history of gay porn.

The Accu-Jac! Omigawd! "You could plug it into your car's cigarette lighter!"

I saw him in some off Broadway semi exploit play in the ‘90s.

And we don’t need a redundant thread on this.

DL already has multiple conversations.

I see the "Redundant Thread, Multiple Conversation, We Have Sufficient" Queen has gone back to 2008 to dig up a topic about Jack Wrangler. LOL. Wrangler was a little before my time but the films were better then. Movies like L.A. Tool & Die and Kansas City Trucking Company actually premiered in "regular" theaters and brought in huge crowds.

I really liked the documentary. The Jack Wrangler's story is a good one. He goes into the whole Margaret Whiting romance (yes, they fucked) and he is quite self-effacing and likable. I'd like to have coffee with him and pick his brain. He has a sweet smile. He knows that when he dies the lead will say "Former Porn Actor Jack Wrangler." Permanent stain. But his father (who actually rented a couple of his son's film to see what all the excitement was about produced legit Hollywood films and, eventually, the TV Show "Bonanza" so I don't think he'll be on the street anytime soon, even though his mother threatened to disinherit him when she found out he was sucking cock on screen.

If Ken Burns had directed it, it would have been a 4 1/2 hours long and divided into 3 parts.

This 'old gay porn was better' meme is one I don't agree with. I like seeing it for the historical interest, but the four or five Wrangler ones I seen, for example, were all poorly edited, horribly lit, with not great co-stars.

r8 Are you posting from the past? Jack Wrangler died in 2009.

by Anonymousreply 11April 16, 2021 2:30 PM

Rebooting this thread because this doc has never gotten the love it deserves. Paint by numbers directing, maybe, but Wrangler and his incredible charisma and wit manages to make it shine. I liked this so much I actually checked out a couple of his movies and despite the lighting and obviously cheaper budget I did find they were 100 times miore fun to watch (and the men sexier) than the present stuff. Jack really comes off as a nice, self depracating, funny guy you would love to share a drink with and have him share a few stories. Really sad he died relatively young, though its a marvel how he managed to escape Aids.

“Are you appearing in the legitimate theater?”

by Anonymousreply 13October 4, 2022 2:35 PM

Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon should be available on Prime Video when you click this link. The one in the OP still says "This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location."

I love his docs. Especially Vito. I Am Divine was great too.
