The Eurovision song contest is just about a month away, and will be held in Rotterdam. Post some of your favorite entries, winners or otherwise. I'll start off with a couple.
And Celine wins in Dublin in 1988...she sings the hell out of the song.

It’s a movie called Eurovision Song Contest, R15. The big song, Husavik, was an Oscar nominee this year. Or are you just joking?

Ukraine is something you need to watch to believe it.
The first time i listened the song i thought what kind of crap is that. The second i thought you need to be on drugs to enjoy it, but after a while i'm starting to like it. It's so weird and bizarre
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 19, 2021 8:35 PM |
R34 I have also become a Ukraine fan. The song is wonderfully batshit.
In other kooky entry news, Iceland is out due to covid-19. Rather unfortunate as I was looking forward to their performance.

Embarrassing trivia: My parents used to host Eurovision parties when I was a child, and some of the adults would sit together and add up the scores for the different countries on a piece of paper. It’s so funny on retrospect, but that was before Twitter obviously.

I think they will show a recording of one of their rehearsals during tonight's second semi-final, so they're still in the competition
Reigning winner Duncan Laurence also tested positive and is forced to pull out from his Grand Final appearance

I guess I will have to watch the finale at the pub this year. I don't see a Eurovision cable broadcast listing in the USA.

I think the only way to (legally) watch it in the US is on Peacock (which I'm not familiar with)
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 20, 2021 6:30 PM |
To be fair, the level this year is pretty decent, there are a good bunch of nice songs.
And yes, Russia has a song about loving yourself and empowerment but for once doesn't seem a phony. She received a lot of hate (she is from Tayikistan and she had the never of being a feminist and speak in favour of gay right. So she has a lot of haters on Russia but people love her at eurovision (so no boos for Russia this year)

Any discussion of Eurovision is incomplete without posting this classic campy performance.
Although Clodagh Rodgers did not win that year (I think she came in second), this is an especially famous performance in her native UK thanks to her extremely brief pink hot pants.
I love how into it the conductor is at the very beginning! He is determined to conduct the SHIT out of this awful song!

My all time favorite ESC entry was Vicky Leandros’s L’amour est bleu in Vienna in 1967. She represented Luxembourg.
Until 1973, each country’s entry had to be sung in (one of) that country’s native languages. ABBA won with Waterloo in 1974, which they sung in Swedish to qualify in Sweden, but in English at the ESC.
Until 1999, only a live orchestra, conducted by someone selected by the country of the entry, could provide music. Personally, I think that ended the quaintness of ESC. Once prerecorded, well mixed music was allowed, the focus on vocal talent was lost to sound editing and stage production values.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 20, 2021 10:40 PM |
The Finnish song is fucking awful and hilariously dated (it feels like listening to those douchebag-y turn of the millennium rock bands, a la Limp Bizkit). Just because it was the only rock song in the sea of cheap pop bangers doesn't automatically make it good.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 20, 2021 10:52 PM |
R91 you'll be delighted to know that Italy is providing a great rock song performed by the hottest man on the planet.
Fun fact, Maneskin's song Torna a casa was used as a soundtrack in a gay Italian movie called Croce e Delizia.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 20, 2021 11:16 PM |
I'm a bit indifferent about the glam rock offering from Italy. Their first place on betting odds is a bit head-scratching. As far as I'm concerned the only song that matters this year is Shum.

That can accurately applied to the whole of the modern pop music industry in all its many branches. They are all now visual acts with sound created by an engineer.

The best of Eurovision. Then. Now. Forever. Israel won the contest that year, but Dschinghis Khan was a huge hit all over Europe.

That Israeli winner in 1979, “Hallelujah” really was quite the showstopper. The choreography was simple but extremely effective. The lead female singer was adorable. The lead male singer was hot as hell, if a teensy bit pitchy. The conductor/songwriter was a hot piece of ass who I gather tried to screw the female singer out of royalties for the song.

R102 I have. When Finland won next year’s final was in Helsinki. I got the ticket. The best was how many gays had traveled to Helsinki. It felt gay bubble where for short time the city center and the arena had huge gay majority.

by Anonymous | reply 107 | May 22, 2021 2:36 AM |
R105 a Finn R107 it was difficult back then, too, you had to stand in the line very early, and majority were sold to fan clubs around Europe
by Anonymous | reply 108 | May 22, 2021 6:49 AM |
R103 That year was something special. Spain was the last to vote, they only needed to not vote for Israeel to win but they give then 10 points.
I think this is one of the most unpredictable years. I think France, Malta and Switzerland will dominate the jury's voting but probable Italy, Ukraine and Cyprus (or even Russia) scoring big on televote.
Anyway, Ukraine is a big uncertainty because i doubt they do well with casual viewers at least not with western viewers (but the song has a lot of fans between eurofans)
by Anonymous | reply 109 | May 22, 2021 12:03 PM |
