It’s a movie called Eurovision Song Contest, R15. The big song, Husavik, was an Oscar nominee this year. Or are you just joking?

by Anonymousreply 18May 6, 2021 12:42 PM

Eurovision is the one thing that unites Europe.

by Anonymousreply 19May 6, 2021 12:59 PM

Will/can Great Britain take part after Brexit?

by Anonymousreply 20May 6, 2021 2:33 PM

R2o It's got nothing to do with EU membership.

R21 Well, it should! The nerve.

by Anonymousreply 22May 7, 2021 1:16 AM

Yes and don't forget it's not YOUR song constest America. It's European.

Ukraine is something you need to watch to believe it.

The first time i listened the song i thought what kind of crap is that. The second i thought you need to be on drugs to enjoy it, but after a while i'm starting to like it. It's so weird and bizarre

by Anonymousreply 34May 19, 2021 8:35 PM

R34 I have also become a Ukraine fan. The song is wonderfully batshit.

In other kooky entry news, Iceland is out due to covid-19. Rather unfortunate as I was looking forward to their performance.

by Anonymousreply 35May 19, 2021 10:15 PM

Embarrassing trivia: My parents used to host Eurovision parties when I was a child, and some of the adults would sit together and add up the scores for the different countries on a piece of paper. It’s so funny on retrospect, but that was before Twitter obviously.

by Anonymousreply 36May 19, 2021 10:21 PM

Every year 75,000 people die from Eurovision side effects.

by Anonymousreply 37May 19, 2021 11:46 PM

No way the UK should be allowed into this contest. Not after Brexit.

They have Britain's Got Talent. That's enough for them.

by Anonymousreply 38May 19, 2021 11:51 PM

^ok, taoiseach ....

by Anonymousreply 39May 19, 2021 11:59 PM

But Eurovision has nothing to do with being european but with being a member of the EBÚ.

Morocco and Lebanon could participate if they want

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2021 6:16 PM

[quote]In other kooky entry news, Iceland is out due to covid-19. Rather unfortunate as I was looking forward to their performance.

I think they will show a recording of one of their rehearsals during tonight's second semi-final, so they're still in the competition

Reigning winner Duncan Laurence also tested positive and is forced to pull out from his Grand Final appearance

by Anonymousreply 41May 20, 2021 6:24 PM

I guess I will have to watch the finale at the pub this year. I don't see a Eurovision cable broadcast listing in the USA.

by Anonymousreply 42May 20, 2021 6:25 PM

I think the only way to (legally) watch it in the US is on Peacock (which I'm not familiar with)

To be fair, the level this year is pretty decent, there are a good bunch of nice songs.

And yes, Russia has a song about loving yourself and empowerment but for once doesn't seem a phony. She received a lot of hate (she is from Tayikistan and she had the never of being a feminist and speak in favour of gay right. So she has a lot of haters on Russia but people love her at eurovision (so no boos for Russia this year)

by Anonymousreply 44May 20, 2021 6:35 PM

Thanks, R43!

by Anonymousreply 45May 20, 2021 6:40 PM

The Vicky Leandros and Severine songs are outstanding. Ireland’s Johnny Logan has a terrific record, winning twice and writing another winning song - Why Me’.

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2021 6:41 PM

Estonian guy is good looking, but his song is very 90s ballad.

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2021 8:14 PM

R47 I believe he was voted the sexiest man in Estonia. Talk about low standards.

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2021 8:22 PM

Oh yes r41! I should have clarified Iceland is unable to perform. I guess their dress rehearsal will do.

Greece’s dancers should have stayed behind the green screen.

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2021 8:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 56May 20, 2021 8:40 PM

R71 It is well known fact only Abba and Céline became super stars and Céline’s success had nothing to do with ESC.

by Anonymousreply 72May 20, 2021 9:14 PM

Latvia's singing is flatter than a pancake...she looked like she stepped out of the Flash Gordon film from 1981.

by Anonymousreply 73May 20, 2021 9:15 PM

I love Denmark, beautiful country and hot men. The language is very difficult, easier to read but impossible to understand when someone is talking it.

by Anonymousreply 74May 20, 2021 9:20 PM

Any discussion of Eurovision is incomplete without posting this classic campy performance.

Although Clodagh Rodgers did not win that year (I think she came in second), this is an especially famous performance in her native UK thanks to her extremely brief pink hot pants.

I love how into it the conductor is at the very beginning! He is determined to conduct the SHIT out of this awful song!

I can't believe those Serbian sluts and smelly-looking Finns qualified for the final but hottie Uku didn't...I think this will be the first Eurovision final ever without a single truly hot guy among the contestants (the Lithuanian frontman is kind of cute but his fashion sense is a yuuuge boner killer).

by Anonymousreply 85May 20, 2021 10:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 89May 20, 2021 10:40 PM

My all time favorite ESC entry was Vicky Leandros’s L’amour est bleu in Vienna in 1967. She represented Luxembourg.

Until 1973, each country’s entry had to be sung in (one of) that country’s native languages. ABBA won with Waterloo in 1974, which they sung in Swedish to qualify in Sweden, but in English at the ESC.

Until 1999, only a live orchestra, conducted by someone selected by the country of the entry, could provide music. Personally, I think that ended the quaintness of ESC. Once prerecorded, well mixed music was allowed, the focus on vocal talent was lost to sound editing and stage production values.

by Anonymousreply 90May 20, 2021 10:40 PM

The Finnish song is fucking awful and hilariously dated (it feels like listening to those douchebag-y turn of the millennium rock bands, a la Limp Bizkit). Just because it was the only rock song in the sea of cheap pop bangers doesn't automatically make it good.

by Anonymousreply 91May 20, 2021 10:52 PM

R91 you'll be delighted to know that Italy is providing a great rock song performed by the hottest man on the planet.

Fun fact, Maneskin's song Torna a casa was used as a soundtrack in a gay Italian movie called Croce e Delizia.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 92May 20, 2021 11:16 PM

I'm a bit indifferent about the glam rock offering from Italy. Their first place on betting odds is a bit head-scratching. As far as I'm concerned the only song that matters this year is Shum.

by Anonymousreply 93May 20, 2021 11:37 PM

[quote]...the focus on vocal talent was lost to sound editing and stage production values.

That can accurately applied to the whole of the modern pop music industry in all its many branches. They are all now visual acts with sound created by an engineer.

Love Eurovision! Ha.s any body here ever attended live?

by Anonymousreply 102May 21, 2021 11:43 PM

That Israeli winner in 1979, “Hallelujah” really was quite the showstopper. The choreography was simple but extremely effective. The lead female singer was adorable. The lead male singer was hot as hell, if a teensy bit pitchy. The conductor/songwriter was a hot piece of ass who I gather tried to screw the female singer out of royalties for the song.

by Anonymousreply 103May 22, 2021 12:14 AM

R102 I have. When Finland won next year’s final was in Helsinki. I got the ticket. The best was how many gays had traveled to Helsinki. It felt gay bubble where for short time the city center and the arena had huge gay majority.

by Anonymousreply 104May 22, 2021 1:15 AM

Are you Icelandic r104?

by Anonymousreply 105May 22, 2021 1:57 AM

It’s all about Shum

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 106May 22, 2021 1:58 AM

R104. Sounds fantastic. I think its quite difficult to get tickets now. Far more difficult than 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 107May 22, 2021 2:36 AM

R105 a Finn R107 it was difficult back then, too, you had to stand in the line very early, and majority were sold to fan clubs around Europe

by Anonymousreply 108May 22, 2021 6:49 AM

R103 That year was something special. Spain was the last to vote, they only needed to not vote for Israeel to win but they give then 10 points.

I think this is one of the most unpredictable years. I think France, Malta and Switzerland will dominate the jury's voting but probable Italy, Ukraine and Cyprus (or even Russia) scoring big on televote.

Anyway, Ukraine is a big uncertainty because i doubt they do well with casual viewers at least not with western viewers (but the song has a lot of fans between eurofans)

by Anonymousreply 109May 22, 2021 12:03 PM

And i think unless the juries save the day for them like in 2018, this year will be the one of swedish debacle

by Anonymousreply 110May 22, 2021 12:11 PM

I lived in Europe for several years, yet never bothered watching Eurovision...which is weird because I love Abba.

by Anonymousreply 111May 22, 2021 12:20 PM

Eurovision is not for everyone (some people hated it, even some of them not for the right reasons).

And this year is pretty decent, but some years are absolutely terrible, with barely a bunch of decent songs

by Anonymousreply 112May 22, 2021 12:22 PM
