I half agree. Liam Hemsworth has the looks, but he is charisma-free. In his films that I've watched, he blends in with the wallpaper. No personality.
Chris, on the other hand, is truly charismatic. I think that's why he's regularly cast. It ain't his acting. He's Brad Pitt 2.0, with an accent.

R140, Hollywood has jumped the couch.
They seem to cast pretty people with zero screen presence in many of these action movies. I like a good action movie, but could they stop forcing people who look like models but have no charisma in front of the camera.
Bad Boys in the 1990s made no sense whatsoever, but Will Smith and Martin Lawrence were great to watch on screen. Fast-forward to now, where we have Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot doing "action" (i.e. comic book) blockbusters. Don't even get me started on the lead actors in the Transformers movies...
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 16, 2021 10:31 AM |
A lot of this is wrong. Actors as a rule usually have charisma but some sneak in who DON’T. Ryan Reynolds, Jen Aniston, ok- millions on millions of frau fans enjoying what they got. Kristen Stewart has magnetism and more, that’s partial to charisma.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 16, 2021 11:03 AM |
Margaret Qualley has no charisma. She’s the new Katie Holmes. Just great heads of hair. Both of these women have already gone much further than their talents should have allowed. Jessica Biel... though she pulled something out of herself for that mini-series, so good for her. Blake Lively has been accused but she’s actually good and very slowly proven it.

Beyonce singing and dancing 20 years ago had charisma because of her beauty. Once she opens her mouth its over. She has no professional skills and unable to present herself as an intelligent person. She's mind numbingly done and poorly spoken she comes off rather unattractive. Girl has no poise whatsoever.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | April 18, 2021 7:35 AM |
I'd disagree about Neve Campbell. While she does have this odd tic of rubbing her neck to convey angst, I don't think she's ever been better than in the Scream movies and she's easy to root for. She seems wholesome and girl next door which is just what that role needs. I can't imagine anyone else in that role. I also thought Courtney Cox was way better in the Scream movies than she was on Friends and much funnier, too.
I do think a lot of people are right when they say charisma isn't beauty. A lot of people are beautiful and are boring to watch. Someone like Matt Bomer is a good example. I don't think I've ever seen someone so beautiful and he seems like a lovely, sweet guy, but I've never been impressed by him on stage or screen. He's competent and doesn't make a fool of himself, but my eyes inevitably wander to other, more charismatic performers when he's on screen. It was never more obvious than when Kathy Bates played his mother on American Horror Story. She's older and far less traditionally beautiful than him, but your eyes stayed fixed to her every time they shared the screen. That's talent and charisma!

Kristen Stewart is the reincarnation of Glenn Ford.

R136 and R165 Glenn Ford SHOULD have had charisma. You kept waiting for him to fucking bring it but he NEVER did.
Now, Rita, on the other hand...

Exactly R166. How he got anywhere in movies is dumbfounding. Plus he cheated on Eleanor Powell with at least a dozen star(lets), and not Hayworth.

I'm sorry, Christian Bale has ZERO chemistry with anyone onstage, therefore, no charisma. He just chews scenery and never actually engages with any of his co-stars. Not one movie i've seen him in where i genuinely clap at his performance.

R168 Glenn Ford was admired by many of the great directors and his fellow actors, I hear him mentioned as their inspiration in many acting work shop videos and Academy career retrospective interviews, Ryan O Neal said that Stanley Kubrick used to tell his actors to do their scenes like Ford, and Quentin Tarantino is a huge fan. that’s why he was so successful. Bette Davis had a long time crush on him and wrote about what a wonderful actor she thought he was in one of her autobiographies, she felt like she had discovered him and felt very proud of that. Ford actually had flings with hundreds of actresses, including a 40 year on and off affair with Rita Hayworth. He got her pregnant when they were filming The Loves of Carmen. It’s all documented in a book written by his son.

R136 Not true at all. Ford is frequently mentioned in autobiographies that I’ve read by many actors and in interviews with them and with some of the greatest directors as an inspiration to them. The actors who met knew him say they miss him very much and call him one of the great characters. Quentin Tarantino has done tributes to him at the theatre he owns in LA and placed a tribute to him in his last film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Josh Duhamel. Everything he does flops, but they keep casting him.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | April 23, 2021 12:15 PM |
R168 I’d cheat on Eleanor Powell, too. Eleanor had good reason to be jealous of Rita Hayworth. Her son said she felt threatened by her because she knew Ford fell for her and that they were having an affair. Powell was so dull compared to Rita, she never had a chance. I recently saw one of her movies on TCM. She was boring as shit and her acting was so stilted. A wet mop has more screen charisma.

R171 and R172 You can lack charisma and still be a good actor.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | April 23, 2021 4:10 PM |
Sorry, but Glenn Ford always seemed like some accountant that happened to wander onto the set. As for his acting ability, his range was zilch, devoid of any emotion except perhaps repressed anger.
And the fact that he slept with hundreds of women says a lot about him than it does about those who jumped on his micropeen in an effort to advance their careers.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | April 23, 2021 4:18 PM |
R178 Unfortunately for you, Kubrick and Tarantino’s opinions are relevant in Hollywood, yours isn’t, that explains Ford’s success for the posters who are asking. Ford was hung like a horse by all accounts. A man who worked wardrobe on his films reported that he was blessed below the waist. Tremendously. His third wife bragged about it. You actually think Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Debbie Reynolds jumped on his big dick to advance their careers?! Nice try!

r173 Because she's underwhelming considering how they built her up. The type of movies she was known for - the dark dystopian sci-fi stuff - went out of style during the Trump years. Emma Stone is another who was built up and underwhelmed.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | April 23, 2021 6:48 PM |
I'd say both Lawrence and Stone have charisma. I find them interesting to watch on screen. Having charisma and talent doesn't necessarily mean you're incapable of being miscast or not having chemistry with a screen partner. I've seen that happen to both of them before, but it doesn't change my opinion of them.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | April 23, 2021 6:52 PM |
Charisma is obviously subjective, just because you think someone lacks charisma, that doesn’t make it a fact. Many movie fans clearly thought many of these actors being named on this thread have charisma because they were top box office draws, their names alone above the title put bodies in the seats. The average moviegoer doesn’t go to see an actor’s films only because they are good actors, plenty of the biggest box office stars couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag, and tons of great actors aren’t box office draws.

R12 Kathy Bates lacks charisma? She's funny and charming. You must have her confused with someone else...
by Anonymous | reply 183 | April 23, 2021 7:19 PM |
Ford always played the quietly noble type forced to take a stand. He recognized this typecasting, and asked to switch roles in 3:10 to Yuma, so he could play the bad guy. Side-note: married to Kathryn Hays (saintly Kim Hughes on "As The World Turns"). Nice -looking guy,, but not too many shirtless scenes in his films. It's a shame he cheated on his wives so much.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | April 23, 2021 8:35 PM |
Tom Cruise has charisma in spades. Actual acting talent? That's debatable, but a lot of big name stars have to have charisma. Think about all those stars Hollywood tried to make over the years. Think about why they really bombed and never went on to anything. They lacked charisma and, usually, talent. In this business, it seems like it's more of a crime to lack charisma rather than talent. There are some so-so actors who have an insane amount of charisma. Sharon Stone, for example. In the right role, she's excellent, but she's very easy to miscast. Still, even miscast, it's hard to take your eyes off of her. It's more than just her being pretty. There are tons of women out there just as pretty as her, but they lack her charisma.
Charisma really is that "it" factor people talk about. It's something that keeps people interested. It goes beyond talent or looks.

I think George Harrison had charisma. I liked his music best, out of all the solo Beatles. He was spiritual, thoughtful and interesting. He took great interest in Hinduism. He had many interests..gardening, restoring an old Downton Abbey type estate, his music...sort of like a Renaissance man. He seemed quieter than the other three, but he didn't lack appeal. All of the Beatles had/have charisma.
