Are you ready to LOSE YOUR GODDAMN MINDS over a BLACK Anne Boleyn?

... and she ain't just black, she is BLACK!

A certain demographic here at Datalounge will be PISSED. (Hint: It's also the same demographic that will watch every damn episode.)

Ah yes lets romanticize those Royals and the upper classes, I mean the current ones are barely able to be accepting of other races but the old one's would've been completely accepting. This bullshit is more offensive than not having anyone black actors, they are re-writing culture in a damaging way that softens the idea of how harsh the upper classes were to those who were different from them, whether that was race, culture or class.

by Anonymousreply 11April 8, 2021 11:49 PM

Colour Blind casting doesn't achieve anything.

It's just a black person playing a white person (Bridgerton), and can be unintentionally hilarious like the infamous Black Mikado.

If they don't bring any issues or mentions or race, I don't see the issue. I remember when they did the Harry Potter play and the actress was black, but the actual character is very neutral (bland?). Anyone can be a child of dentists. Anyone can play the character.

If there is a race element to the movie/story then that is bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 25April 9, 2021 12:03 AM

Do you understand the difference between fact and fiction? Harry Potter was a piece of fiction, so they can cast whomever they like. Anne Boleyn was a real person and there are portraits of her. We know that she was white.

by Anonymousreply 27April 9, 2021 12:05 AM

An Asian actress plays Anne in Six. In fact, there’s only one white actress in the cast and no one said a single word about it. The show was brilliant and a hit.

by Anonymousreply 28April 9, 2021 12:06 AM

R25 I disagree in the sense that this one doesn't matter, for a fictional character I agree that race swapping doesn't matter but when a character, such as Anne Boleyn, is changed it skews the view of what the culture was like at the time. If a black woman were to marry the king, it would be a big deal and she would not be welcomed as it would be highly unlikely that she was off the upper class.

by Anonymousreply 29April 9, 2021 12:06 AM

I don't really like history that's not history. I didn't like Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette. Ugh. If I'm going to watch something historical I want it to be as it actually was, not an artsy interpretation. I didn't like seeing Kevin Costner bust down the sign in Hidden Figures. That wasn't accurate. Little House on the Prairie wasn't accurate either. The doctor that delivered Laura Ingalls into the world was black, and he is nowhere to be found on the screen.

Weren't there some real black queens of England? A real story about that would be more endearing simply because it was real.

by Anonymousreply 35April 9, 2021 12:11 AM

How come nobody ever does a biopic about Anne of Cleeves? Huh? Her story has much more drama than any of the other wives. She gets all excited because she has been chosen to be the wife of the King of England. She arrives to much fanfare only to be told by the king that she is too ugly to be his wife. How must she react to not end up in the Tower or with her head rolling around on the ground?

by Anonymousreply 45April 9, 2021 12:16 AM

Anne Boleyn's position in history was to pull the King, and England, away from the Catholic Church and to the Protestant Church. I actually think a modern musical could be made of this. The music is all liturgy, then Anne comes in singing gospel "Oh Happy Day".

by Anonymousreply 46April 9, 2021 12:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 55April 9, 2021 12:31 AM

The UK has specialized in colorblind casting for years. I went to the Royal National Theatre's production of His Dark Materials. Lyra was played by a young blonde girl who was a dead ringer for Renee Zellweger. Her mother, the evil Mrs. Coulter was played by the divine Lesley Manville. Lyra's guardian Lord Asriel was played by a very good if rather stolid black actor David Harewood. All well and good.

But the problem arose because the big reveal in the middle of His Dark Materials is that Lord Asriel isn't merely Lyra's guardian but her biological father. I have to say a muffled titter swept across the audience and it took you right out of the play.

by Anonymousreply 57April 9, 2021 12:40 AM

They don't have to play like that R43.

I'm trying not to be an SJW, but there are many characters (even characters who are based on real life people) where race doesn't factor into the story.

I am asking (perhaps I'm asking too much), that people consider the performance over the actor's race. You are automatically putting issues of race on the character/story that didn't exist at the time. This is similar to "can gay actors play straight" or "straight actors play gay"? Of course they can. It is acting.

by Anonymousreply 58April 9, 2021 12:44 AM

How so R57?

by Anonymousreply 59April 9, 2021 12:45 AM

The Oscars are going to lose even more credibility if they give them all out to black actors like the SAGs did. It turns them into participation trophies. Diversity doesn't mean hiring all black actors and then not hiring out gay actors (Jodie Foster got snubbed this year), Latino actors, East Asian and South Asian actors, disabled actors.

by Anonymousreply 60April 9, 2021 12:45 AM

No this is not similar to "can gay actors play straight" or "straight actors play gay"..She looks different, she is fucking black, blacks there couldnt be in her positions then , that reality....we all know that you want change history.. She looks ridicolous. I dont even caanot see at that picture

It is not similar. You can't "see" gay (as much as we joke about gayface and gay voice). You only know someone is gay if they tell you or you discover them in an adult bookstore on their knees. You can see skin color.

by Anonymousreply 68April 9, 2021 1:01 AM

Where woke posturing intersects with gimmick casting....

by Anonymousreply 69April 9, 2021 1:01 AM

So a black actor can never play historical "white" parts R68? (Lord getting, inadvertately, into SJW territory now)..

You believe they are the character or you don't. Lady MacBeth for example, could be played by a black actress, because being black (for the actress) has nothing to do with the part. A black actress could still play the part as well. To put the extra "layer" of "would the court of Lord Macbeth react the same to a black wife"? Of course they wouldn't, but you are putting that layer on the performance just by the race of the actress.

She is just playing Lady MacBeth. The race of the actress is immaterial.

Could a white actor play Obama? No, because being black was a important "role" (IDW), of his presidency. For a lot of historical roles (sans Othello) does it really matter?

by Anonymousreply 70April 9, 2021 1:12 AM

[quote]She is just playing Lady MacBeth. The race of the actress is immaterial.

Once again, Lady MacBeth was a fictional character. We have no actual pictures of her. Anne Boylen was a real person who we have pictures of.

True (btw Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek that's Caucasian / white). But it was done with the transforming results resembling those original characters: much darker tone, curly hair, ethnic facial hair styling and features done by makeup, actors whose look can blend in among Asians - "passing", basically Rachel Dolezalism. For black actors to play white characters with the same standards above, they should be literally drowned in white makeup, and their features altered to resemble those specific white characters.

Not losing my mind but it is just a bit ridiculous. I mean everyone knows what Anne Boleyn looked like and of course, that she was white. I don't even think there were too many African people in England at the time....maybe a few, but hardly. l mean, it is as ridiculous as those blondes in silent films playing Egyptian pharaoh wives. If Margot Robbie played in a biopic about Donna Summer it would be a bit odd to say the least.

by Anonymousreply 109April 9, 2021 10:59 AM

I think the actress is stunning as f. But i would never see her as Ann Boylen. That's ridiculous. And more importantly, her husband will always be the unforgettable Pacey Witter in my eyes. Beautiful couple.

That being said, black people in the West continue to talk about cultural appropriation whenever something isn't right for them, but they don't mind taking the place of whites in historical films. That's why I don't walk into their perpetual victimization. BLMs which is funded by George Soros the same asshole who always demands more migrants in Europe when he is not European, all these people are creating more hatred than union between blacks and whites.

Woke culture is frankly the worst subculture America could spreading in the world. Because it is about erasing History for some white psychopaths and also taking revenge for some blacks who are unable to go forward and see that positioning themselves as a victim is a great mistake. It is wanted by the govs. I don't see black people as victims but as human beings.

No, I won't be losing my mind; it doesn't bother me. I like the idea of color-blind casting. It bothered me more that the Diana in The Crown didn't match my idea of Diana.

It's interesting that otherwise color blindness is now very frowned upon by modern anti-racists. I wonder how adherents of critical race theory square this kind of thing? Is it wrong for a black woman to play Anne Boleyn because it obscures structural racism?

by Anonymousreply 112April 9, 2021 11:45 AM

If further evidence was needed as to why the film industry is dead, this is it.

by Anonymousreply 113April 9, 2021 11:59 AM

We opera queens are used to this. It’s FINE. And let’s not forget all the Dames who take on Lear, Prospero, and Hamlet. There are so many necessary differences between the historical Anne Boleyn and ANY actress playing her today—the fact that you’re fixated on the skin color matching up says more about YOU than it does the performance.

by Anonymousreply 114April 9, 2021 12:47 PM

R114 Amen, thank you baby.

by Anonymousreply 115April 9, 2021 1:01 PM

It's absurd.

Instead of telling stories of black people, they are telling stories of white people using a black actress.

Not a good idea.

There are a lot of very interesting black historical characters (and other minorities, because blacks are not the only one) and it would be interesting to tell their stories because most of them are unknown for the masses. Instead of that we get a black Anne Boleyn

by Anonymousreply 116April 9, 2021 1:05 PM

R105 The problem are not the black actors, there are the perfomances.

After Boseman and Day winning the reviews on the main newspaper of Spain were that neither of them were by any means the best performance of the year.

Giving an award to fill a quota doesn't make any favours

by Anonymousreply 117April 9, 2021 1:08 PM

I think it's great. It will showcase Henry VIII's little-recognised anti-racist and multi-cultural credentials.

by Anonymousreply 118April 9, 2021 1:24 PM

A South Asian actress played Anne Boleyn in 1933.

by Anonymousreply 119April 9, 2021 1:25 PM

[quote]the fact that you’re fixated on the skin color matching up says more about YOU than it does the performance.

The fact is that fixation only becomes an issue for the "diversity" mob when the skin is white.

by Anonymousreply 120April 9, 2021 1:36 PM

It’s all in the timing. BLM. Hollywood becoming Woke and suddenly realizing actors of color are not always treated fairly then BOOM black actors sweep the SAG awards. Were all of them deserving? No. Is every acting award winner in history deserving? No. Did Pia Zadora deserve a Golden Globe? No. The bottom line is these awards are ridiculous and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

by Anonymousreply 121April 9, 2021 2:25 PM

R97 you are fucking idiot... i am not surprised blacks only steal in USa with such mind

by Anonymousreply 122April 9, 2021 2:26 PM

OP point blank says a lot of you guys are gonna lose your minds over this, and then you proceed to lose your minds over it.

God DAMN, how do you not have anything else in your life to worry about? How does this non-issue get you so upset?

by Anonymousreply 123April 9, 2021 2:31 PM

R116 Exactly. Finallu someone with a brain here

by Anonymousreply 124April 9, 2021 3:13 PM

But there's the question, will a move or tv show get as much press if they tell black stories with black actors?

by Anonymousreply 125April 9, 2021 3:41 PM

Anne of the Thousand Days? No, Hollywood of a Thousand Nut Cases!

by Anonymousreply 126April 9, 2021 3:56 PM

[quote]But there's the question, will a move or tv show get as much press if they tell black stories with black actors?

Online free streaming sites are full of films by, about and for Black audiences. Not a White (or any other race for that matter) face to be seen anywhere. Perhaps this may provide an indication of their popularity.

by Anonymousreply 127April 9, 2021 4:13 PM

R114 - it says something about them if they don't know history and geography. How on earth would Henry VIII meet an African woman and fall in love at that point in history and in that geographic location? The chances are slim to none. There were probably a total of 10 human beings who were black in the whole country. He may have seen maybe one in his life. The choice of this actress is silly because it would totally change the narrative of the history. Ok, make a movie about anyone loving anyone but when EVERYONE knows who Henry VIII was, there are portraits and narratives of and about Anne this is just totally silly.

by Anonymousreply 128April 9, 2021 5:59 PM

Are they going to change the story so that she’s beheaded by a white police officer while resisting arrest?

by Anonymousreply 129April 9, 2021 6:25 PM

I’m willing to give it a shot. If she can act she can act. We’ve already had version with white actesses that have taken a tone of artistic liberties, hello The Tudors. So since I doubt they would have tried to be more then a typical drama, why not let a person of color have a go. We’ve told this story 10,000 times so we aren’t lacking in white versions.

by Anonymousreply 130April 9, 2021 6:49 PM

We're not lacking in black versions of Porgy & Bess. What do you think the chances of seeing a white version are?

by Anonymousreply 131April 9, 2021 10:30 PM

[quote]OP point blank says a lot of you guys are gonna lose your minds over this, and then you proceed to lose your minds over it. God DAMN, how do you not have anything else in your life to worry about? How does this non-issue get you so upset?

It sounds like the only one who is upset is you.

It's a discussion forum. Some of us think it's a dumb idea. So?

actually, quite good if you are a racist hungarian

R133 Good for them. Bravi.

by Anonymousreply 134April 9, 2021 10:39 PM

[quote]And let’s not forget all the Dames who take on Lear, Prospero, and Hamlet.

Like R25, you're comparing apples to oranges. What you're conveniently forgetting is those are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS you listed, R114. Nobody is clutching their pearls because some fantasy figure is reinterpreted. Yes, there should be more diversity casting and fictional stories offer a lot more opportunity for that. Make James Bond black? Fine. Film a Star Wars story where all the human characters are non-white? Okay. Why not? Creative license is common enough in fiction.

Changing the race or sex of a REAL person is ridiculous stunt casting. This Anne Boleyn series could work if it were a fictional take "inspired by real life persons and events" or a parody or a musical (like Hamilton). That's not how it's being presented. It distracts from the story they are telling.

One should ask: why can't they tell the stories of historical non-white people? There must be plenty of historical accounts not based on European history that would make great entertainment. Now, especially, there's an audience ready for it. Why use a black actress to piggy-back onto the same Boleyn story told over and over again? It promotes a false idea that the only interesting stories are white stories.

There is such hypocrisy in this, too. These woke people applauding a black Anne Boleyn are the same ones who insisted on accuracy in casting: Chinese characters should only be played by Chinese actors, only gay people can play gay characters, only transgender people can play transgender characters. Except white characters can be played by non-white actors. They complain loudly and often about cultural appropriation. You bet they would be losing their minds if Julia Roberts were actually cast as Harriet Tubman. They can't have it both ways.

And OP, you're a bit late. There was already a thread on this back in February:

R135, how can this not be “a fictional take” on the historical characters? Every historical drama is just that. We’re limited in what we know or ever can know about these long-dead people. What’s really being filmed is our own inventions and interpretations.

by Anonymousreply 136April 10, 2021 3:45 AM

Is the actress "playing white" in her acting choices?

It's not "whiteface" yet but veering close!

by Anonymousreply 137April 10, 2021 5:33 AM

Look who she chose to marry.

by Anonymousreply 138April 10, 2021 5:41 AM

Well, it's out, and she is getting raves though the series is not.

by Anonymousreply 139June 4, 2021 12:43 AM

And of course she chose to marry a white guy.

I didn’t see you bitches complaining about the hot Jonathan Rhys-something playing the old fat and stinky Henry VIII.

by Anonymousreply 142June 4, 2021 12:10 PM

This wacky tv version lost over 300,000 viewers from part 1 to part 3.

by Anonymousreply 143June 25, 2021 1:01 PM

I watched ep 1 for free on a Prime and I have no interest in watching the rest. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz. The Tudors wasn’t exactly historically accurate but it was fun. This is just plain dull. No one in the cast stands out. They’re all adequate and well trained and that’s about it.
