Pressure builds for Justice Breyer to retire from the Supreme Court

So he can be replaced by a Black woman.

Oooooo, a sassy black woman judge. It’ll be just like Legally Blonde.

by Anonymousreply 1March 31, 2021 1:42 PM

OP tries to do some weird race baiting, but of course he needs to retire. Did we learn nothing from RBG and how that utterly screwed us.

Fuck him if he doesn't retire soon while the Dems have the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2021 1:43 PM

Understandably so, things are so politically charged right now that I still fear that our government may fall to the American Taliban-style evangelical Christian white supremacist autocracy.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2021 1:44 PM

[quote]So he can be replaced by a Black woman.

Any black’ll do.

by Anonymousreply 4March 31, 2021 1:56 PM

Ching Chong Ching Chong “Replaced with a black judge.” Ching Chong Ching Chong

by Anonymousreply 5March 31, 2021 1:59 PM

Well, as long as the appointee is nominated based upon immutable characteristics rather than actual accomplishments and qualifications, what could go wrong? Also, OP, the word “woman” is a transphobic, racist, alt-right dog whistle; we use the term “non men” now.

by Anonymousreply 6March 31, 2021 2:00 PM

r2, I agree

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2021 2:07 PM

How about replace him with Crazy Alice from Howard Stern?

by Anonymousreply 8March 31, 2021 2:09 PM

I suspect that he will announce his retirement in late June as the Supreme Court ends its term for this year.

by Anonymousreply 9March 31, 2021 2:09 PM

Is AOC black enough? She’d be perfect and as all of the necessary requisites.

by Anonymousreply 10March 31, 2021 2:10 PM

How about that Laverne Cox? Or RuPaul?

by Anonymousreply 11March 31, 2021 2:11 PM

R11 anything else is literal violence!!!!

by Anonymousreply 12March 31, 2021 2:20 PM

If it helps my nomination hearings, I'm willing to try new hairstyles.

They better Yaaaas that Equality Act, is all I’m sayin’ bitch.

by Anonymousreply 15March 31, 2021 2:39 PM

Sometimes, I think these stories would get better treatment if the authors focused less on the diversity pool and more on their qualifications. Americans will know these people are diverse when they see them, no need to do right-wing memesters a favor with easy material.

by Anonymousreply 16March 31, 2021 2:52 PM

I'm doing my hoodoo on Thomas and Alito. Good incantations take time, but eventually, POP go the weasels.

Supreme Court Justices are supposed to be above being political. Thats why they aren't elected and why they tend to stay on for years.

I would suspect that Breyer is more concerned about his ability to serve well than trying to make a strategic departure to adjust the balance of the court. Although in today's world, it's certainly probable.

by Anonymousreply 22March 31, 2021 3:05 PM

Is he really being pressured to resign specifically to be replaced by a black woman? I suspect the more urgent motivation is to be able to replace him with a thirty-year-old, fitness-fanatic NON-FASCIST jurist who has four great-grandparents all alive and well in their late-nineties.

Hell, looking at the rest of the bench, even just a jurist who believes in a democracy where people should be allowed to vote without impediment would be a marvellous start!

by Anonymousreply 23March 31, 2021 3:11 PM

Why didn't RBG retire under Obama? Why wouldn't he retire ASAP?

I genuinely do not understand their mindset.

by Anonymousreply 24March 31, 2021 3:15 PM

R11, you do realize that the “equality” Act undoes all gay rights by redefining biological sex as “gender identity”, right? So, if that passes, it’s the end of gay rights. And you’re a fucking homophobic moron.

by Anonymousreply 25March 31, 2021 3:19 PM

Because political theatre. Political theatre is fun for people.

by Anonymousreply 26March 31, 2021 3:19 PM

R25-what? Did you read R11?

by Anonymousreply 27March 31, 2021 3:20 PM

"Immutable characteristics" is just TERFspeak.

by Anonymousreply 28March 31, 2021 3:22 PM

[Quote]Is he really being pressured to resign specifically to be replaced by a black woman? I suspect the more urgent motivation is to be able to replace him with a thirty-year-old, fitness-fanatic NON-FASCIST jurist

Shh r23, OP desperately wants to race bait into making this about black people.

by Anonymousreply 29March 31, 2021 3:23 PM

Why do people act like specifically selecting a black woman would mean settling for a less qualified candidate? There are many black female judges just as qualified as any of the current justices. The people who claim they just want the "most qualified candidate" really just need to admit they mean a white one.

by Anonymousreply 30March 31, 2021 3:23 PM

Why isn't Joe Biden stepping down so a Black woman can take his place?

by Anonymousreply 31March 31, 2021 3:24 PM

This thread is already tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 32March 31, 2021 3:26 PM

It’s going to four years of this. Blue Deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 33March 31, 2021 3:27 PM

Breyer is 82 years old. He should go...letting someone younger take his place, while the Democrats still have marginal power. I know the SCOTUS should be above politics and non partisan...but that's not the reality anymore. The Supreme Court is "prime real estate" so to speak, for partisan issues.

by Anonymousreply 34March 31, 2021 3:31 PM

No, it's going to be even more because Joe Biden is not only going to win re-election in 2024, he's going to win it in 2028, 2032, 2036 and so on for the rest of his life because term limits will be history by then and 100% of the wealth will be in the hands of the ultra-rich neoliberals who deserve it.

In fact, Joe Biden has been declared the winner of every election for the rest of his life. Now start putting him, Carter, Clinton, and Obama on Mount Rushmore!

by Anonymousreply 35March 31, 2021 3:31 PM

I can't even tell if r35 is satire

by Anonymousreply 36March 31, 2021 3:39 PM

I like the court as it is, for now. I'm waiting on the Harvard affirmative action case. The plaintiffs have submitted a writ, not sure when they'll vote whether to take it.

by Anonymousreply 37March 31, 2021 3:42 PM

If one Democratic Senator was to die in a state where a Republican Governor could replace them with another Republican the Democratic majority would disappear in an instant and so would any chance of putting another liberal on the Supreme Court.

by Anonymousreply 38March 31, 2021 5:15 PM

^^You know it!

by Anonymousreply 39March 31, 2021 5:20 PM

I am the only black woman who could replace Justice Breyer, give Justice Thomas a major coronary just by buying him a can of Coke at the SCOTUS vending machine and provide Biden with a redemption opportunity.

It's a win-win.

[quote] OP desperately wants to race bait into making this about black people.

The thread title, the article, and the replacement by a Black woman are all from the linked MSNBC article, dumbfuck, R29. If you think its "race baiting" (a term that only Freepers use), take it up with them.

by Anonymousreply 41March 31, 2021 6:05 PM

r38, do you really think Joe Manchin is going to vote to seat a liberal on the Supreme Court?

by Anonymousreply 42March 31, 2021 6:29 PM

R35, why don’t you go suck Brett Kavanaugh’s cock? I’ve heard he’ll accept a bro-job after a few beers.

by Anonymousreply 43March 31, 2021 6:34 PM

What an utterly disgusting and disgraceful thing to do to someone who has served well for years.

And frankly, there has NEVER been an Asian Supreme Court justice. So perhaps it's time for that when it's time for the next appointment.

by Anonymousreply 44March 31, 2021 6:41 PM

LOL r20

by Anonymousreply 45March 31, 2021 6:45 PM

[quote] Why didn't RBG retire under Obama?

Because she wanted Hillary to appoint her successor.

[quote] Why wouldn't he retire ASAP?

He will this summer. I’d bet on it if I were a betting man.

by Anonymousreply 46March 31, 2021 6:47 PM

[quote]Why didn't RBG retire under Obama?

[quote]Because she wanted Hillary to appoint her successor.

Is that true?

I suppose that no rational person would have thought she might lose to cheeto, so that by the time it became apparent that it might be a problem, it was too late to alter course.

Can you imagine the sheer angst RBG must have had when Obama was not allowed to replace Scalia 10 months before the election and it was beginning to look like cheeto might win?

by Anonymousreply 47March 31, 2021 7:12 PM

R47 Just my speculation.

by Anonymousreply 48March 31, 2021 7:54 PM

He'll be 83 in a few months. Nobody should be working at that age. Sorry you never developed hobbies and interests to occupy your golden years. But you have to know when to leave.

by Anonymousreply 49March 31, 2021 10:30 PM

"Can you imagine the sheer angst RBG must have had when Obama was not allowed to replace Scalia"

She had none. She was too self-centered and self-promoting to care. Even after being plagued with illnesses, diseases, surgeries and repeatedly falling asleep in public.

by Anonymousreply 50March 31, 2021 10:33 PM

Unlike the democrats, you can bet that Moscow Mitch will pull out all the stops in order to grind the senate to a halt to prevent this from happening. Breyer better retire the second after the decisions are announced in June.

by Anonymousreply 51March 31, 2021 10:35 PM

Oh fuck offfff with the affirmative action talk.

Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the likely nominee, and she is beyond qualified for the Supreme Court. She'd be an excellent addition.

by Anonymousreply 52March 31, 2021 10:37 PM

Oh God, is that fat black cow Stacey Abrams still looking for a job?

by Anonymousreply 53March 31, 2021 10:46 PM

[quote]Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the likely nominee, and she is beyond qualified for the Supreme Court. She'd be an excellent addition.

So would having the first Asian Supreme Court Justice - male or female.

Don't hide your agenda by pretending you care about "diversity" or representation.

by Anonymousreply 54April 1, 2021 1:29 AM

One advantage of nominating a black woman: Dems can call Repugs racist for opposing her.
