Yeah, it looks like they're inventing a whole lot of stuff to inject some drama and suspense into it.

The books (at least the original trilogy) are great, but are not really directly adaptable as a series since each books covers a distinct period of the Foundation. There wouldn't be many ongoing characters, a problem for a series.
