Is Anyone Elegant Anymore?

In dress, in manners, in speech? I can't think of a single person with a public profile that is truly elegant in any category.

Would George Clooney fit your definition?

by Anonymousreply 34March 20, 2021 5:00 PM

I’m too fat to be elegant, but I have beautiful manners.

by Anonymousreply 35March 20, 2021 5:03 PM

Define elegance? Or are you referring to what used to be called "fine living" or "gracious living" in the middle of the last century?

In high school, I worked at the third oldest Burdine's, and the old-timers told me women would dress up and wear gloves to go shopping in the 50s and early 60s. House models would show the high-end clothes to prospective customers. The store had not been remodeled (it was sold and turned into soulless office space), and it contained all sorts of cornices, chandeliers, and a women's lounge where shoppers could rest. By the time I got there, its original restaurants had closed, though.

Elegance still exists, "gracious living" has gone with the wind.

by Anonymousreply 36March 20, 2021 5:04 PM

I hope this helps to define Elegance.

by Anonymousreply 49March 20, 2021 5:57 PM

It depends on where you are. In more upscale areas, you still see a lot of older ladies very well turned out. The younger ones, not so much. When I first started going to St. Pete Fl in the 70s,one of the things I absolutely loved was seeing old ladies in their hats and gloves and old gents in seersucker suits . They were the remnants of a vanished world. They all had such beautiful manners too. The last time I went to St. Pete there wasnt even a shred of any of that left. I always try to look as good as I can when I go outsomewhere, ironed clothes, neatly groomed etc. I cant tell you the number of times people have asked me why I was "dressed up" . It makes me sad for them.

I have a theory! Since we've been declining in elegance over the decades and centuries, we are in the doldrums of mainstream clothing wear at this point in time with casualness taken to an extreme and everyone wearing sleepwear, sweatpants, hoodies, gym shorts etc.

In one hundred years (mark your calendars!) elegance will reemerge as the everyday look. This shit always moves in circles/cycles.

by Anonymousreply 67March 20, 2021 6:33 PM

R67, no. People in the past wore "elegant" clothes because they were expected to, not necessarily because that's how they wanted to dress. If they'd had the option of dressing casually they would have, taken it.

BTW, I bet the eldergay busybodies complaining about how other people dress probably don't wear business suits all day.

by Anonymousreply 68March 20, 2021 6:36 PM

R65, you're just making excuses for racists.

Funny how the elderly Republicans think "ghetto" stuff and WAP are so terrible....but admire Kim Guilfoyle, Melania, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Lauren Boebert, all of whom are tacky as hell.

by Anonymousreply 69March 20, 2021 6:37 PM

R69 and you're assuming "ghetto" only refers to people of color, which makes YOU the racist.

by Anonymousreply 70March 20, 2021 6:39 PM

Am I the only person who always wonders how those old elegant clothes smelled? There were no machiens to do laundry and both bathing and textile cleaning were less frequent. Imagine what a man wearing a shirt, vest/waistcoat, jacket, stockings and hat and what a woman wearing three foundation garments underneath a dress and gloves would have smelled like in New York City summers in the early 1900s.

Probably better for photos, and there's got to be a reason that custom changed.

by Anonymousreply 71March 20, 2021 6:40 PM

I'm not R65, but do live in what most would refer to as "the ghetto". I'm surrounded by black people, and they do in fact make fun of white people who try to adopt "ghetto" speak and behavior. It really is a thing that everyone except people like you notice

by Anonymousreply 72March 20, 2021 6:41 PM

No.

by Anonymousreply 73March 20, 2021 6:42 PM

Go to the places in Doha where the exceptionally wealthy ladies enjoy a cup of coffee. You will see elegance.

by Anonymousreply 74March 20, 2021 6:43 PM

R61 No R55 is correct. Why should English spoken poorly be above criticism? It is ugly and indeed inelegant. Whether it's from our inner cities or the suburbs.

by Anonymousreply 75March 20, 2021 6:44 PM

I concur that the word "ghetto" is not racist since there are white people who live in them too. There used to be Jewish "ghettos". "Ghetto" just refers to a type of behavior now and whites can act and talk that way too. I call it trashy and, yes, Boebert, Greene and the Trump's are trashy albeit in a different way.

by Anonymousreply 76March 20, 2021 6:45 PM

R75, snobbism isn't elegant.

by Anonymousreply 77March 20, 2021 6:45 PM

English spoken poorly is inelegant. Just as much as dressing like a slob.

by Anonymousreply 83March 20, 2021 6:50 PM

R79, you guys certainly give a shit about me, which is why you're attacking me, and accusing ME of being racist even though you're the ones using hateful GOP stereotypes about black people and "ghetto" speech.

Personally, I think it's inelegant to insist that everything was better in the past because you hate and fear social progress. You also lack the self-awareness to understand that people have been complaining about "kids today" for the past 5000 years or so. Look up the "Golden Age Fallacy"

Nothing's less elegant than conservatism and snobbism.

by Anonymousreply 84March 20, 2021 6:54 PM

I was in the supermarket the other day and came across a baked good called "Elegant Lady Fingers" so, yes, elegance it still a thing.

by Anonymousreply 85March 20, 2021 6:57 PM

R84, I think it's true what you say about older generations' views of younger generations, but even if you accept some degree of relativism, there's still the possibility that today's culture is in fact more vulgar than the culture of50+ years ago. I think it's safe to say that the culture of the 1950s was NOT more vulgar than the culture of the Romans.

by Anonymousreply 86March 20, 2021 7:00 PM

Every conversation - it can be about sponges - ends up about race these days. Boring.

by Anonymousreply 87March 20, 2021 7:00 PM

R75 I agree and tend to avoid those, especially adults, who use ghetto speak. Major turnoff.

by Anonymousreply 88March 20, 2021 7:01 PM

Whatever happened to class?

by Anonymousreply 89March 20, 2021 7:02 PM

R84 Face it, the gene pool is becoming dumber with each generation.

by Anonymousreply 90March 20, 2021 7:03 PM

R84 Some of us here can see back to the 1950s. Lived through the 60s. And where part of the many changes in society.

You would have to deaf, dumb and blind to think that there is not less concern today about how the masses present themselves compared to the past.

The huge change took place in the late 1960s. 50 years or so ago. And that's the way it is.

Pointing that out has nothing to do with snobbism or being conservative.

R67 - you are right, of course. Fashion is action and reaction. The current doldrums are due to the pandemic, Silicon Valley casual wear, and, most important, the wait for new materials. As we speak, 3D printing and other processes are creating new fabrics that change entirely how designers adorn the human body. Moreover, there is a strong trend, coming from societal changes, to create genuinely androgynous looks. Given the difference in body types, experimentation continues.

Not to worry, a reaction to that will emerge soon enough.

In short, athleticism replaced elegance. And as with most things style related, the gays led that movement.

by Anonymousreply 135March 21, 2021 4:27 PM

R121 true. However there is something more horrific than fat women in leggings. That is fat women in leggings made from thin fabric so that the leggings are transparent in sunlight. Then you’re forced to see corpulent flesh illuminated like a Broadway marquee. More like a horror show.

OP - even the 'elegant' people you're thinking of were only elegant in selected photo shoots, pap pics, and interviews.

It was all PR and very little uncontrolled imagery or media came out to the general public. These 'elegant' people also cursed, said foul shit, acted a fool or horribly, were mean to people - you name it.

Clothing was better made and more elegant in style until the 1980s. This applies to mass and expensive fashion. Even lower-middle class women could look well put together. Also, women cared more about keeping weight down, not skinny but at least weight not considered fat or obese. So that’s 2 battles won over today’s women.

Clothing sizes were also standardized until the 1980s when vanity sizing crept into the industry. So when fat women made a big deal about Marilyn Monroe being a size 12-14 as her later year dresses confirmed, they’re just being stupidly duped. A size 12-14 in 1960 is like a size 8-10 today. But hey, let the fatties have their fantasies.

I believe, in my actual form, I am relentlessly elegant in everything I desire to do. Whether it's my work in music, or how I present myself in good clothes or conversation-- my desire is to be timelessly elegant. I may not be the brightest light bulb of a young adult boy, but my real desire is to be a true gentleman. If life ever got to being elegant in general again, I would only hope there would be a huge comeback for supper clubs and eloquent cruises in the Atlantic. I'm tired of 'freestyle' cruising, I want the formalities! I want to be the male version of Rose! I want to wear a top and tails -- and drink lots of brandy.

I agree with r106, modern day Angelina Jolie is a current model of elegance in Hollywood. She has unique eye catching style that is still classy and luxurious, yet she doesn't look like somebody's grandma. Still sexy.

Angelina Jolie in that get-up a model of elegance? Is she on her way to a toga party?

R8 You are correct. Fred Astaire was elegant.

[quote]even the 'elegant' people you're thinking of were only elegant in selected photo shoots, pap pics, and interviews.

Yes, of course people let their hair down. But pre-1965 (or so) society was much more reserved than today.

Nick Wooster.

Angelina Jolie is not elegant, she has trashy tattoos and wore a phial of blood around her neck.

I'm having great success training my young next door neighbour to be elegant and showing him the finer things in life.

True elegance seems to be mistaken for vanity. Elegance is about kind manners, treating people with love, maintaining friendships and having things look well taken care of and nice.

There so much meanness in the world. Why is it popular to insult people and be rude? Like the person with the best insult wins? No one wins when you have to fight and hurt and can't be friends.

R150 you answered your own question, love.

Most people nowadays are vulgar, selfish, and bullying, meaning that the few decent sorts left are overwhelmed and traumatised trying to deal kindly with hordes of barbarians, and eventually must give up on their morals and ideals in order to look after themselves.

To survive in a brutal world is to become a brute.

I had one friend who wore Italian cut suits and a diamond stud in his ear. I gave him a beautiful leather jacket of red and white squares from Paris that gave him that little extra fire of color and sexiness. But that was years ago.

R156 thinks things were so much more polite in the old days. Some of you know nothing about history. There have been good and bad people in every generation. There was never any point in history where everyone was a saint

This point of view is bizarre to see on a gay board since no one has benefitted more from social progress than gay people

No one told r138 than men are fatter now, too. He just wants to bully women for their appearance

You'd think men who are attracted to men would care more about men's appearances than women's....

There is one woman, a model, who seems very elegant to me. I think she's an older Italian model who has done some ads here. Short, white hair, slender and always chic looking. She has beautiful bone structure.

Angelina Jolie's behavior, including dragging out the divorce, rules out elegance for me. Behind closed doors she's likely anything but.
