I've just started to read Paul Anka's memoir called My Way. A prolific songwriter and singer he had his first big hit when he was only 15 - "Diana" went to #1 and earned him a gold record. Born in Ottawa, Canada, he wrote songs for many other artists and also appeared in a number of movies. What are your thoughts on multi-talented Paul Anka?
My mother loved some Paul Anka song.

He had a reputation as a total asshole.

Young Paul Anka. Nice head of hair. Of Lebanese descent.

His song “Closing Doors” from his album The Painter is a real gut punch of a song; very melancholy and not what you’d usually associate with Paul Anka.

I'd love to know what his royalties were for this melody he whipped out in just a few minutes.
[quote] It was performed more than 1.4 million times during the Johnny Carson's 30-year run as host. The song earned him the Classic Contribution Award from BMI.

Richard and Karen Carpenter hated him, they fired him as the opening act of their tour. Allegedly, Paul and Richard almost got into a fistfight.

That's [italic]my[/italic]song--it speaks to my endless pain and heartache, and yet tells me someone is watching out for me and cares for me.
It's no one else's song--it is certainly not William's.

In the mid-1980s,[38] Anka was secretly recorded while launching a tirade against his crew and band members, berating them for behavior that he considered unprofessional. When asked about it on the interview program Fresh Air, he referred to the person who did the recording as a "snake we later fired". The recording became widely known after being uploaded to the internet around 2004, and a number of quotes from it became famous, including "The guys get shirts!"; "Don't make a maniac out of me!"; and "Slice like a fucking hammer".[39] Some of the quotes were reproduced verbatim by Al Pacino's character in the 2007 film Ocean's Thirteen.[38]

I was once at a function and, while leaving, picked a place card up off the floor. It said, "Mr. Paula Anka, Table Four." I now have it on a shelf alongside other curios.

He dated Connie Francis and wrote the hit "Teddy" for her.

LOVE THIS DUET w/ Peter Cetera.
There's a few versions of this but this is the best one. Has nothing to do with The Notebook, its just a fan edit.

Paul Albert Anka, 79
Anka was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to Camelia (née Tannis) and Andrew Emile "Andy" Anka Sr., who owned a restaurant called the Locanda. His parents were both of Lebanese Christian descent. His father came to America from Bab Tuma in Damascus, Syria, and his mother was an immigrant from Lebanon. His mother died when he was 18.

He was only 16 when he wrote and recorded "Diana"? I never would have thought that; he sounds fully adult on the recording... guess his voice changed early.
Anyway, that gives a whole new "Ewww" meaning to the text.

Creepy dude. I always imagined he was behind Sam Cooke's death.

R21 Connie is great, but that song not so good. She did not even like it and removed it from the B side of Mama and replaced it with a Sedaka penned song, Valentino.

Very honest mini-doc about the making of a teen idol. And the professionalism that leads to longevity, whereas others fade into oblivion.

Hawt guy. I swear he served up major bulge on the Carson show in the ‘70s. Definite BDE, but he’s like 4’10.” Anger management issues to be sure. Trade, at most. Pity….

I can't imagine Neil Sedaka almost getting into a fistfight with anyone. He was just a big ol' girl's blouse.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 6, 2021 12:47 AM |
Didn't he write the them song to the Tonight Show... and made something like $400 every time they played it... 200 times a year for 30 years?

Richard Carpenter was apparently jealous that Sedaka was getting more audience applause in his warm up than the "Carpenters" did.

He has a sense of humor, at least, on the Gilmore Girls:
I always hated his having a baby song.

R47 I posted the wrong link! Posted below now. Jason Bateman appears just before the 4.00 minute mark looking like he’s very sleepy on the Ozark set. This vid includes messages from lots of DL “faves” - Aniston, Kimmel, Travolta, ONJ, Leeeeeza Gibbons not Liza sadly.
