Jan Hooks as Tina in Pee wee’s Big Adventure

She was comedy gold as the know-it-all tour guide at The Alamo.

Fantastic scene. RIP, Jan

by Anonymousreply 1March 12, 2021 9:40 PM

I must have watched that movie 20x in the 80s

by Anonymousreply 2March 12, 2021 9:40 PM

That line is awesome: Yes, there are thousands and thousands of uses for corn, all of which I will tell you about right now.

by Anonymousreply 3March 12, 2021 9:42 PM

I will always love Tina Fey's comment on Jan Hooks' passing: "What a talent. Jan should have had a real film career. If Rob Fucking Schneider can have a film career, Jan Hooks deserved a film career."

by Anonymousreply 4March 12, 2021 9:42 PM

I haven’t watched that scene in several years. I just rewatched it an laughed like I did the first time I saw it. Love it!

by Anonymousreply 5March 12, 2021 9:43 PM

Let me guess. Large Marge sent you here.

by Anonymousreply 6March 12, 2021 9:48 PM

Were she and Phil Hartman (the film's co-writer) together at the time?

by Anonymousreply 7March 12, 2021 9:58 PM

Loved her!

by Anonymousreply 8March 12, 2021 10:01 PM

Large Marge was another fave! Mrs Steve on the tv series too!

by Anonymousreply 9March 12, 2021 10:27 PM

I think Tina was my role model. And Pee wee and his masturbation habit.

by Anonymousreply 10March 14, 2021 9:00 PM

She had her many moments on SNL. I always loved the Sweeney Sisters. And there was a great black and white short on SNL where she played an old woman visiting her memories in a bank vault. I always thought she was slightly miscast in Designing Women, something wasn’t clicking.

by Anonymousreply 11March 14, 2021 9:46 PM

Even though she was a bit miscast on Designing Women and the show was on its last legs when she joined, she still managed to create a character with life and vitality. She was committed at least. I admired that about her.

Fantastic scene and PeeWee’s expression in that still pic sums up about 65% of my life!

Here is another classic...”Look at him, sitting on that stool like he’s doing it a favor!”

My Texan family and I quote the Alamo tour scene to each other to this day.

by Anonymousreply 14March 14, 2021 11:11 PM

Weird. I thought I followed her on Twitter before I was kicked off for calling Lea Michele, & Betsy DeVos CUNTS...twice. I was wrong.

This randomly reminded me of the scene in "The Jerk" where the carnie takes Nathan's virginity.

Nathan: "Where's your garbage?"

Carnie: *Throws half-eaten corn dog onto the floor*

R13 Whoa...thanks for posting that! Brilliantly written and acted.

Compare that to the SNL of today.

by Anonymousreply 16March 15, 2021 12:36 AM

I was surprised to read in one of the SNL books that she had crippling stage fright. She always came across as such a confident performer.

by Anonymousreply 17March 15, 2021 12:43 AM

Jan Hooks was a brilliant comedic actress. It's a shame her personal problems made her withdraw, she deserved a much better career.

by Anonymousreply 18March 15, 2021 12:45 AM

Amazing the difference in the quality of writing for that SNL sketch. That is how you write comedy.

by Anonymousreply 19March 15, 2021 12:49 AM

I've been quoting this scene for thirty-five years!

by Anonymousreply 20March 15, 2021 5:46 AM

And she was awesome as Jenna's trashy Florida mom on 30 Rock. Gone too soon, but she left a lot of comedy gems behind.

by Anonymousreply 21March 15, 2021 5:49 AM

She was a bigger cunt than Delta, and Delta was huge!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 22March 15, 2021 6:27 AM

Peak Tim Burton.. It has been downhill ever since.

by Anonymousreply 23March 15, 2021 7:13 AM

That scene wasn't funny

just annoying like her character.

by Anonymousreply 24March 15, 2021 7:36 AM

ADOBE

by Anonymousreply 25March 27, 2021 9:07 PM

Well buenos dias!

by Anonymousreply 26March 27, 2021 9:47 PM

Jan Hooks was an insanely talented comedic actress and Designing Women was not worthy of her talents, but Big Three Network $$$ is hard to turn down.

by Anonymousreply 27March 27, 2021 11:50 PM

She was good on DW asshole

by Anonymousreply 28March 28, 2021 12:19 AM

Jan Hooks is a Beloved DL Icon. Love her. Brilliant comedienne.

by Anonymousreply 29March 28, 2021 12:23 AM

It was there for her to run with, but Jan Hooks didn’t want a big career. Many people have mentioned that she got a lot of offers over the years and turned them all down.

Very sad but insightful article about her life linked below.

She had personal problems and an alcohol problem. She spent roughly the last dozen or so years of her life as a semi-recluse at her house near Woodstock, NY, drinking and smoking non-stop. Throat cancer was what got her.

by Anonymousreply 31March 28, 2021 12:31 AM

My favorite was her Bette Davis sketch, there are just so many off the wall references. Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery, etc.

“NOBODY could make a waffle like Burt Lahr!”

Jan as the ancient, addled, post-stroke Bette Davis was hysterical.

by Anonymousreply 33March 28, 2021 1:35 AM

Ronald Colman sent me a dead OWL!

by Anonymousreply 34March 28, 2021 1:37 AM

That was a truly excellent article, r30, a real peek behind the curtains. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 35March 28, 2021 2:15 AM

Could somebody explain why PeeWee wanted to see the basement?

by Anonymousreply 36March 28, 2021 5:42 AM

[quote]My favorite was her Bette Davis sketch, there are just so many off the wall references. Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery, etc.

My favorite part was when she made the sound of the VCR going fast forward- "EEeeebdebdebebbebdebe...".

[quote] Could somebody explain why PeeWee wanted to see the basement?

His beloved bicycle was stolen, and a fake fortune teller told him she saw it in the basement of the Alamo.

by Anonymousreply 38March 28, 2021 6:13 AM

Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 39March 28, 2021 6:15 AM

Jan Hooks was truly funny in everything I ever saw her in. And she could rock a Southern accent like nobody's business.

by Anonymousreply 40March 28, 2021 6:32 AM

[quote] This randomly reminded me of the scene in "The Jerk" where the carnie takes Nathan's virginity.

What does that have to do with Jan Hooks, you stupid bitch?

by Anonymousreply 41March 28, 2021 6:46 AM

Thank you r47, you beat me to it
