Hunt For the Wilderpeople. It’s a New Zealand movie from 2016 or so. It’s funny, it’s got Sam Neill in it, and the kid is a good little actor. It’s better than the trailer suggests.
It’s majestical. Check it out. I think it’s on Netflix, but it may have been Prime.

R56 Is that Death of the Maiden movie the one where Sigourney Weaver is held hostage and tortured with a piece of music based on a play? That doesn’t sound uplifting.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 12, 2021 2:05 PM |
"Sullivan's Travels" has it all. Slapstick, screwball comedy, romance, adventure, and a sweet, soulful, uplifting message. It is one of my favorite movies!

I watched this for the first time over the Christmas holidays and found it painfully unfunny. Does it improve if you watch it again? (I will say that Liev Schreiber looked great in drag.)
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 12, 2021 9:34 PM |
R65 I saw this for the first time last year also and had the same reaction. It looked like something that was intended to be a cult film but just couldn't pull it off.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 12, 2021 9:40 PM |
R65 I personally think that humor is often in the eye of the beholder, and I doubt that you would find it any more funny after a second viewing. I'm quite sure that I have a rather twisted sense of humor, and sometimes things strike me as funny that aren't conventionally humorous.
I do agree, though, that Liev Schreiber looked unexpectedly good.

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" makes me laugh every viewing.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is worth it for the descent in the elevator.
"A Hard Day's Night" for the fun and music. Same with "Hairspray."
"Babe" or "Benji: The Hunted" for the animals. Cute, sweet, conniving, vicious, hapless, but most of all cute!

Just watched "Love Me Tonight" again. Pure pleasure. and probably best film musical of all time. Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette McDonald, Myrna Loy - Rodgers and Hart score with 3 standards, witty, funny script, pre-code sexiness, innovative direction by Rouben Mamoulian (who directed original stage productions of "Oklahoma!" and "Porgy and Bess"), use of slow and fast motion and zoom shots, etc. adds up to 90 minutes of delight.

I find this guy lists some great movies every year that I would never have heard of if not for his TOP 50 list for the past 11 years. Most are just movies that were never on my radar. Many I checked out and was pleasantly surprised. The gay themed films he generally picks I have never heard of (he doesn't usually pick the films that made a big cultural splash (except for 2017). And he does pick some real head-scratchers sometimes: "Hard to be A God", "Kajillioaires", and Xavier Dolan's, "It's Only the End of the World". At any rate, here is his 2020 list and it is full of gay themed movies that I have not seen mentioned in most lists through the year. But most important is the myriad of just good, unknown movies (like "Moffie"), which I never would have probably heard of without seeing this:

The amazingly short amount of time between the making of the movie, Short Term 12 , and the Oscar nominations that keep rising for the cast in their movies that have followed. That movie was blessed by what....I don't know. But it wore its heart on its sleeve and had an impeccable screenplay. And, finally, it was very fucking GOOD! Which seems to be rewarding, over and over, the cast as time goes by. I mean, who on earth saw coming that nomination for LaKeith Stanfield?????? I'll tell you: Nobody! Not even Melania!

[italic]Places In the Heart.[/italic] A perfect film, perfect cast with nary a sour note. Also features Ed Harris at his hottest.
[italic]The Liberation of L.B. Jones.[/italic] Omg, what a FANTASTIC, grossly underrated film. Roscoe Lee Browne deserved an Oscar nomination for his pitch-perfect performance. Plus a delightfully fuckable Lee Majors.
[italic]Below.[/italic] Suoer-watchable suspense aboard a WW2 submarine. Featuring Bruce Greenwood, Holt McCallany, Scott Foley, and Matthew Davis at their hottest.
[italic]The Enchanted Cottage.[/italic] Beautiful little film with Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire.

If you want funny, check out Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), Rough Night (2017) and Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). Pure comedy, no intricate plot.
But I'd give all the awards to this year's The Forgotten Battle (2020). Definitely for cinematography and sound editing. Tom Felton manages to look elderly at 33 and Gijs Blom (from the gay movie Jongens) delivers an amazing portrayal of a "humanized" Nazi soldier. The guy can act!
