A Rage To Live (1965)
I am watching this melodrama on youtube. Suzanne Pleshette is one HORNY bitch. It's not enough she has a handsome husband ( Bradford Dillman) to come home to, she has a string of affairs ( endless fucking) with other hot men- Mark Goddard, Ben Gazzara. I'm JEALOUS.
I know this movie has been mentioned here before, but I just watched it so I had to vent here.

It's a better book that it is a movie, although it is far too long.

Novelist John O'hara....does anyone read him anymore? More to the point, does any read novels?

I always thought Ben Gazzara was quite a hunk.

Appointment in Samarra, BUtterfield 8, Ten North Frederick, and Pal Joey are all still in print, as are his New York stories.

More novels are sold right now than ever before.
It all depends on whom you hang out with. I know almost no one who does not read novels, but there are many people in the USA who do not. But if you include all kinds of novels--science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, romance novels, erotic novels, etc.--I think most Americans do read some form of fiction.

BUtterfield 8 a popular John O'Hara novel like A Rage to Live deals with a slut who gets her cum-up-pance. Taylor won her first Oscar for the film version of BUtterfield 8 (1960)
Liz and Pleshette were both smoking. Did you see ex wife of Jack Klugman and Match Game fav Brett Somers who plays the guy's mom who catches them fooling around in the basement? O'Hara's books were popular back in the day.

And she got her comeuppance because of a guy she didn't even fuck!!!! Poor Grace.

The only thing that could have topped the camp in this movie would be the presence of someone like Constance Ford, Eileen Heckart, Grayson Hall or Elaine Stritch as one of the local wives, and maybe Dame Judith Anderson as the town matriarch. It's a hoot!

A couple years ago I read "Butterfield 8" , which was really good. The psychology of the characters was very interesting, and drew me in more than the plot. I should try "A Rage to Live".

R8- Peter Graves wanted to fuck her. He was HANDSOME back then.

Someone in the other thread about this movie said how ridiculous it was to believe that Suzanne Pleshette was supposed to be a teenager in this movie.

It used to still be in print from Modern Library, but it went out of print about twenty years ago. But you should be able to find copies at used bookstores.
Be aware: it's VERY long. We're talking Dickens novel length.

R13- Quantity without the Quality of a Dickens novel.

Suzanne made a fabulous teenager!

R12 Especially with that deep voice and she didn't seem younger than Mark Goddard.

R16- Don't tell me that Mark Goddard was supposed to be a teenager too. He looks about 34 years old in that movie.

I thought that was understood when i posed the warning.
Few books do have the quality of a Dickens novel (he is among the best of the best). But I have still read books (not by him) that are that long anyway.

Dillman was one of those actors who kept almost making it big, but didn't. He was a great guest star on the Wild Wild West though; in fact, he must have been friends with Robert Conrad, as they did a few things together.

This has a great title but I've never watched it because it's black and white and stars a bunch of nobodies.

R20, I thought Dillman was quite a looker as Mary's architect beau in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." But alas, the relationship only lasted one episode.
R4, Young Gazzara was sexy with that deep gravel voice, hairy chest, and intense glare that made you sense danger.

I'm sorry, did you not see that BRETT FUCKING SOMERS is in this epic?

I first noticed Bradford Dillman in the late 1970's or early 1980's on the 4:30 Movie on channel 7 during Planet Of The Apes week. He appeared as a Veterinarian in Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971). I thought he was SO good looking when I was a gayling.

Suzanne Pleshette play a woman with a Gay Man's hungry for Grade A dick
And she sure catches a lot of good dick in this movie

R16 Goddard b.1936 was in fact 1 year older than Pleshette. Grace was supposed to be a high school student and I assume he was supposed to be around 20 or old enough to get in legal trouble for fooling around with a minor.

The movie was made at a time when you were supposed to be ashamed of being a slut.
It's a badge of honor today.

R24, He was Robert Redford's best friend in "The Way We Were".
Dillman was married to Suzy Parker until her death in 2003, he died in 2018.

R17 Grace was a minor and Goddard was probably meant to be around 20. The 2 actors were both in their late 20s at the time.

After learning George Gershwin had died, John O'Hara wrote one of my favorite comments: "I don't have to believe it if I don't want to."
