Clark Gable / James Craig
Craig was tall, robust and drop dead gorgeous. He did stints at various studios and on Broadway during the 1930s. By the early 40s he was a contract player at MGM and ended up starring in a few films that had been intended for Gable after Gable went off to war. Tobacco and alcohol took an eventual toll on his looks and life and he ended up a king of the B list. Lots of TV in the 50s and 60s.

I've read both Boccaccio and Chaucer, and I get what you're implying. But Chaucer, though he was intentionally influenced by the language, structure, and style of The Decameron, did not slavishly imitate; rather, he focused on his observations of the breadth of English society.
