Female tv anchors and their choice of professional attire

I've noticed a trend for the some years now of my local women anchors wearing really tight dresses, yes even the plumper ones, more appropriate for a cocktail party, often sleeveless and always paired with ridiculous stilettos. Whatever happened to the business suit? Skirt, blouse and jacket? Do they leave their 6 am live news broadcast and go straight to cocktails and dinner?

Op, don't post without obligatory pic.

Anything for ratings.

I agree, OP. On CNN, some of the women wear cocktail dresses. The men are always in suits, the most casual they'll appear will be sans tie. The only woman who consistently dresses conservatively is Christine Romans.

Watching Poppy Harlow on CNN right now and she's wearing a black cocktail dress with sheet sleeves...and it's 9:30 in the morning!

I don’t see that women should dress like imitation men to be professional OP but I’m not keen on the tight sleeveless dress look either. The not-at-all-missed Kayleigh what’s her face trump sidekick was a prime example, always looked as if she was off for drinks afterwards. Maybe she was of course... I expect Daddy Donnie liked it.

At least the "ready for HD" pleather trend has somewhat died out. You still see some female local news anchors wearing shiny fabrics but not too much.

by Anonymousreply 6February 17, 2021 2:46 PM

I thought it was only the Fox babes who liked to show cleavage but I'm seeing it on local news more frequently.

by Anonymousreply 7February 17, 2021 2:50 PM

Gotta agree. The sleeveless attire is just wrong. Years ago noticed this on my local news 12 but now it seems to have gone national

You know it's not the women who choose that clothing, right? Those outfits are chosen by the suits. They're all straight men and they all think if they *have* to have women newscasters, at least they'll be nearly naked.

I was kind of amazed by the party clothes the female anchors and weather women in LA wore when I visited there in 2000. Now they dress that way from coast to coast.

Nora O'Donnell on CBS wears power suits but at times, they boarder on camp and costumey. They're tailored to a micro-level and sometimes, she looks way too harsh and vampy to be delivering news. She's obviously really into it though. When Diane Sawyer helmed the ABC World News, she got it right. Nice outfits, tailored well, but they fit the moment and the job she was doing.

On any given night, O'Donnell will wear black pinstripe from head to toe with spiked heels, the jacket buttoned at the waist so smart and tightly that she looks like an hourglass, but not in a good way. Or she'll wear a suit all in lavender or some shit. Just way, way over the top. Nothing at all relatable about that woman.

Some of them are so tight I'm surprised they can sit down.

by Anonymousreply 13February 17, 2021 3:48 PM

On Fox News, underwear is optional lol

Same here on our local stations. The other day this rather chesty lady had those puppies on full display, and the FB page for that station was full of outraged comments, wich they quickly deleted because she is black. One lady who's style I always admired for her rather severe good taste has gotten on the sleeveless trend ,as well as sausage casing tightness. Its rather sad to see how women have taken steps back on being considered "sexy" instead of intelligent.

My friend is a news anchor in Phoenix. She actually doesn’t get paid that much (less than $100k) and has to use her own money to buy clothing that she wears on the air. She ends up shopping at Nordstrom Rack and Last Chance (where returns to Nordstrom go as well as things that don’t sell at The Rack). The local anchors gossip about each other a lot. Apparently one of the newer ‘personalities’ (she does field stories) is an escort on the side.

There are no mistakes on tv when it comes to appearance. Everything they wear is approved by producers, bought by stylist after first going through test markets. Women have it harder in this regard - hair , boobs , etc are up for debate. Men wear suits

Diane Sawyer credits Richard Nixon of all people for her style choices. When she left his employ to go into TV, he told her she looked best in simple clothes, and she stuck with that.

You'd expect less (or more) from America's Junior Miss, r19?

The young twats wear their monochromatic sheeny wrap dresses so tight you can see how their meals are progressing through their ladybowels.

by Anonymousreply 21February 17, 2021 5:13 PM

r17 yeah I always heard that clothing especially if we're talking network or cable news is bought by stylists and wardrobe approves before airing. I guess if you are in a smaller local market it varies.

Im in Florida so the look OP is talking about has been on trend for years. You actually cannot get on air if you're not attractive really, guys too. The men are mostly variations of Gio Benitez and Boris Sanchez. They wear fitted polo shirts out in the field to show off their muscles.

R21 calling them twats, but not the pricks in charge?

Jackie Johnson did the weather for the LA CBS affiliate and became known for her big rack and in appropriate clothing. This video shows her sitting down and then she she stands, she looks like she's ready for the clubs.

I think women are pressured to sexualize themselves on air. I think their attire, for the most part, is ridiculous. But men make the rules so "hot" and "sexy" it is. Older female newscasters are fired much much sooner than their male colleagues.

by Anonymousreply 25February 17, 2021 5:52 PM

The shameless jezebels!

by Anonymousreply 26February 17, 2021 6:03 PM

It's the Fox Newsification of female anchors. Fox is like Walmart - once they start doing something, the entire industry follows. sadly.
