What is everyday gay life like in Finland? I get the feeling that they are not overtly homophobic because of their reserve, but being gay can still hurt you in business, housing, etc. I say "everyday gay life" because, yeah, there are gay pride parades but those are not an indication of what it is like to be gay at work, university, etc.

After spending time there, the whole blond thing becomes banal. You eventually crave the diversity of looks in the US. It seems like they are all beautiful for the first few days though.

Universities are generally very safe to be openly gay in. I can't say much about worklife or business in general, but there have been cases of issues with renting apartments as a gay couple.

A lot of Finnish politicians, actors, musicians and entertainment personalities are out in general.

So Finland is a pretty great place to be gay if you are the discreet, ' just want to live my gay life not bothering anyone ' type of gay. But even the flamboyant annoying types are safe in the south.

I didn't realise until I cracked them open that Finland outside of a few main urban areas is essentially a cluster of tiny islands and bits of land, and that many people go by boat between houses or villages rather than walk. Boating and fishing is a massive part of their community life and culture, and almost every native is a good capable sailor and fisherman.
