So what? It's a 70-year-old movie.

I think you've wandered onto the wrong messageboard, r1

Possibly my favorite movie ever. It captures Texas perfectly. As an outsider who lives there part time, it was and is a great representation of a unique culture as well as a good story with a great gay cast. The anti-Tejano discrimination storyline is such a shock for a movie of that time. Love it.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 14, 2021 8:41 AM |
It's utterly fantastic.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 14, 2021 8:44 AM |
Aussie beefcake stud Rod Taylor is in it too briefly, isn't he?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 14, 2021 8:48 AM |
It's gaytasticness on celluloid, r6.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 14, 2021 8:50 AM |
All the Hollywood "cool kids" of 1956 are in it. Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean, not to mention Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo and Rod Taylor as well
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 14, 2021 9:52 AM |
Did Rock want to have sex with Rod during the making of the movie? Their names make it sound like a cheesy 90s gay porn flick.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 14, 2021 9:55 AM |
^^ Yes, they can call that 90s gay porn flick, "Rockin' The Rod" :)
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 14, 2021 10:15 AM |
Cheesy or not, I'd gladly pay to see any footage if Rod had ever fucked Rock or any other man for that matter. I know Taylor was straight but he was one of the sexiest actors of the 50s and 60s for me. Even as a young gayling in the 90s when I watched The Birds, his raw sexiness took my breath away.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 14, 2021 11:16 AM |
^^ Rod Taylor was only 32 when he made "The Birds", such a daddy at such a young age
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 14, 2021 11:40 AM |
R12, even thirty year olds looked mature back then. I prefer my men that way, not like the ones right now who behave and try to look like juvenile frat boys.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 14, 2021 11:59 AM |
Here's hot daddy Rod from the movie, "Time Machine". He was only 29 in that movie

I thought it was funny that in Giant, Elizabeth stars opposite a closeted gay guy nicknamed BICK. In Cat on a Hot Tin Roof her character is married to a closeted gay guy names BRICK.
Anyway, Giant truly was an epic and didn't turn out quite like I thought it would. Rock and Dennis Hopper were gorgeous, as was Liz of course. I had known Mercedes McCambridge was the voice of possessed Reagan in The Exorcist, but it was cool to see her act on-screen.
It was interesting how a film from the 50s had better wigs and makeup for the aging process than many films today.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 14, 2021 1:30 PM |
It is long but, as a true epic, covers a lot of time and storyline. I haven’t seen it in a long time but remember it as a beautifully filmed and engaging story. It wanders at times, but Giant is big.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 14, 2021 1:46 PM |
A long, plodding movie. Liz and Rock are acting away while James Dean is in a completely different universe.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 14, 2021 2:06 PM |
R17, you make a good point. I really like the movie but Dean seems to be in his own separate film.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 14, 2021 2:39 PM |
One of five films in which Sal Mineo is killed. I think he set the record for dying in movies.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 14, 2021 2:41 PM |
GIANT is a must see! It’s long, so be ready for intermission.
It’s an epic covering so many issues that are unfortunately still relevant today.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 14, 2021 2:47 PM |
Taylor loved his booze and it definitely showed on his face, even at such a young age. When I watched the gaytastic "Welcome to Woop Woop" I didn't even realize that was him in one of the lead roles until the end credits role, because that's how much whiskey had disfigured his once handsome face.

@r19, "One of five films in which Sal Mineo is killed. I think he set the record for dying in movies. "
Yeah, the outwardly Gay guy always gets it in the movies
... and in real life :(
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 14, 2021 3:08 PM |
I always think of Mercedes McCambridge spurring the hell out of that poor horse!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 14, 2021 5:07 PM |
@r23, "Whst am I, chopped liver? "
No, but I hear you kind of smelled like it

What is the Bick quote? “We use vinegar on our greens. Makes ‘em taste less bitter.”

R1 is waiting for the next Fast & Furious.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 14, 2021 5:12 PM |
I'd like to tailor HIS rod!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 14, 2021 5:21 PM |
My cat's name is Edna Furball in honor of the author of the book Giant was based upon.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 14, 2021 5:22 PM |
Carroll Baker wrote that preparing for filming, the makeup department kept trying to make her look like other stars... Sandra Dee, Dorothy Malone, etc. Finally she said, “I’m playing Elizabeth Taylor’s daughter. Could you try to make me look like HER?”
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 14, 2021 5:57 PM |
Actually, it's Dean's worst performance, the one that cruelly exposed his limitations as an actor. Not just because he has no fucking clue how to play a mature man, and embarasses himself by playing a gray-haired Jett like a whiny teenager, he just wasn't convincing as a Texas ranchhand of the early 20th century. Texas farmers aren't whiny and sensitive, even if that's their natural personality the behaviors are beaten out of them at an early age.
Not a great movie, IMHO, it's much too long and I could never make myself care about any of the principals. Yes, the actors play their roles with enough charisma that I've watched the whole thing through a couple of times, but I just don't like or identify with Leslie, Bick, or Jett.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 15, 2021 1:20 AM |
I think the movie’s basically boring, too, especially considering Hudson and Taylor are just serviceable actors.
It’s interesting to see Dean and Baker together, though.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 15, 2021 1:29 AM |
I have always wanted to visit Marfa bc of this movie
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 15, 2021 2:32 AM |
Though she played Liz's daughter in the film, Carroll Baker was actually a year older than Liz.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 15, 2021 2:45 AM |
I agree Dean is over the top and they drag out his drunken scene too long. But he is convincing as a sad, bitter man who thought money would fix his unhappiness and low self esteem - and turned to alcohol when he realized how empty the American Dream was. One of the best stories of the danger of the American Dream - and Dean makes you believe it. A little editing and a little toning down would have helped though.

[quote] considering Hudson and Taylor are just serviceable actors.
GASP!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 15, 2021 12:50 PM |
Why is it called Giant? Is it because Rock looks like one next to Dean?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 16, 2021 11:11 PM |
r8 where was Grace Kelly and Marilyn? They were huge stars by the mid-50s.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 16, 2021 11:37 PM |
R39 what film has EVERY star?
Also, Liz and Marilyn hated each other.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 16, 2021 11:51 PM |
Sadly this film and it was a mess. Scratch that, they didn't get Leo.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 16, 2021 11:57 PM |
I actually liked Valentines Day, and yes, it had stars. They did want Leo and originally had Halle Berry before she dropped out.
She then did the even worse New Years Eve, also filled with stars.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 17, 2021 12:05 AM |
R41, you either posted in the wrong thread, or are from a different universe than the rest of us.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 17, 2021 12:18 AM |
Ultimately, overrated. I’d rather watch Red Garters any day. George Sidney, George Saunders? Oh, George Stevens! Blah!!!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 17, 2021 4:12 AM |
If you don't love Giant, your heart is made of stone and your soul is made of dust.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 17, 2021 1:32 PM |
Jane Withers steals the movie as Vashti.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 17, 2021 2:35 PM |
R46 who names a baby girl "Vashti". That story itself deserves a movie.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 27, 2021 5:15 PM |
It was long, ridiculously long. Hudson’s only Oscar nomination too.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 27, 2021 5:27 PM |
What a terrible movie. The sets and makeup and screaming, stupid Ferber bullshit.
And, worst of all, between Rock the Lump and Liz-as-Always-in-Her-Prime before the burlesque of her "real" acting career - the slovenly years - there is the atrocity of James Dean, throwing up the scenery he's swallowed and begging fo a cock in his mouth just to shut him up.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 27, 2021 5:31 PM |
Contrary to someone upthread, I thought the aging makeup was horrendous, and marred the whole movie.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 27, 2021 5:32 PM |
R50 don't hold back, tell us what you really think.
