The Wizard of Oz remake in the works
A Wizard of Oz remake is in the works!
The new movie - in the works with New Line Cinema - will be directed by Watchmen's Nicole Kassell. The film will be an adaptation from L. Frank Baum’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
The Wizard of Oz was already a movie in 1939 starring Judy Garland.
“I am incredibly honored to join Temple Hill and New Line in bringing this beloved classic to the screen,” Nicole said (via Variety). “While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale. The opportunity to examine the original themes—the quest for courage, love, wisdom and home— feels more timely and urgent than ever. These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road!”
The studio promises this film will be a “fresh take” on the 1939 version.

You know, they could do a good adaptation of the studio wouldn’t demand that they cast the usual names. Dorothy, I’m sure, will be black and we’ll be saying that “The Wiz” did it better. “Return to Oz” got it right. That really was the tone of the books. This will be a CGI mess.

I'm okay with that, as long as it's NOTHING like the 1939 version, which was in turn nothing like the book.
Make something like the 1980s "Return to Oz", which was as dark and creepy like the books, and I'd be interested. Make another musical, or something as CGI-heavy and ludicrous as "Oz the Great and Powerful" or whatever they called that mess, and I won't be interested.

Oz the Great and Powerful was horrendous.

The original book is a remarkable children's book. It has this spare lonely feeling to its prose.
The epigraph from it that Gregory Maguire chose for "Wicked" has always haunted me too--it's almost shocking to realize this was in a children's book:
""Well," said the Head, "I will give you my answer. You have no right to expect me to send you back to Kansas unless you do something for me in return. In this country everyone must pay for everything he gets. If you wish me to use my magic power to send you home again you must do something for me first. Help me and I will help you."
"What must I do?" asked the girl.
"Kill the Wicked Witch of the West," answered Oz."

They’d be better off adapting Wicked. I wanna see the drug induced orgy, though I’m sure it won’t compare to the scene that played in my head.

All the roles must be played by trans women of color. It's the only way to address the serious issue of a TWOC being killed every 37 seconds in America. I therefore humbly withdraw my name from the shortlist for Dorothy.

R16, there was a 1925 version which included Oliver Hardy as the woodsman. This version introduced many of the elements that are now assumed to be original to the 1939 film.
There were also several one reel OZ films produced by Baum himself.

[quote]I wonder what black actress will be playing Dorothy.
There were black people in Kansas, so it would be believable to have some black locals. In Oz, on the other hand, there are the Winkies, who are yellow and the Tottenhots who may be assumed to be black. There may other OoC that I’m not aware of.

Call it The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, stay faithful to the book, make it clear that it is an adaptation, and NOT a remake. Do not make it a musical.

Tip
Ozma was born to Samuel and Katherine Pastoria, the king and queen of Oz. However, soon after birth, her parents were killed by Eamonn on the charge of the Wizard.[2]
Sometime following, Ozma came into the care of Mombi and was renamed Tip. She was given "medicine" to change her into a boy, instead claimed to be due to "bad blood". For years following, locked in his room all the time and wishing to experience the outside world, Tip's friend Jack continually visited him, attempting to cut through the vines blocking the entrance to his home. After Mombi took in two stragglers, Dorothy Gale and Lucas, they discovered the existence of Tip. After Lucas was poisoned, they temporarily locked Mombi in her room and broke down Tip's door, freeing him. He escaped with Jack, the latter taking an emerald dagger owned by Mombi. Free, they camped for the night in the woods. However, when Tip woke up, he had turned in to a girl, much to the surprise of Jack.[3]
Due to this, with Mombi having been seemingly killed by Lucas, Tip and Jack travelled to the kingdom of Ev, searching for a herbalist to make Tip's medicine. While Jack went looking, Tip attempted to scrub her face, hoping it to be a dream, to no avail. They eventually found a herbalist, who after inspecting the little remaining, revealed to Tip that it was a black elixir, and that she was naturally born a girl, with the elixir itself suppressing that. Because of this, Tip ran off. Jack eventually found her several stories above him. When he found her, he snuck a kiss, causing her to push him, accidentally sending him to his death.[4

This has incredible mess written all over it.
The 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz is the most influential movie of all time. It is also the most watched. And the most popular. There are thousands and thousands of references in other movies, TV shows, and popular culture to the iconic characters and scenes in this movie. Why would anyone think that this needs a remake?
It will end up as a richly deserved disaster.

[quote] The 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz is the most influential movie of all time. It is also the most watched. And the most popular.
Judy was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.

" Why would anyone think that this needs a remake?"
The only possible tack to take with a remake, is to make an adaptation of the book and NOT a remake of the beloved 1939 film.
That or "Wicked", which really ought to be made as an animated movie. WEHT that project? I saw the storyboards set to "Defying Gravity" once, it looked good.
