Appropriate Tip

Had lunch with friend. Quesadilla $15.95, + Coffee $2.50 = $18.45 + 3.64 tax = $22.09. He left $25.00. Is that good tip?

by Anonymousreply 150February 12, 2021 9:04 PM

No. But its not nothing. I would have left 4 dollars.

by Anonymousreply 1February 9, 2021 5:00 PM

It's around 15 percent. It's not offensively low, and many will argue on this thread that they shouldn't have to pay more than 10 or 15 percent, but I never tip below 20 percent unless someone is truly rude, terrible or unattentive.

Particularly in a pandemic, which has nearly decimated the restaurant industry.

For me, at minimum, the tip should have been $3.70.

by Anonymousreply 2February 9, 2021 5:04 PM

20% = round up to $4.50

by Anonymousreply 3February 9, 2021 5:05 PM

Way too much R3.

by Anonymousreply 4February 9, 2021 5:07 PM

What do you think OP? How much did you tip?

by Anonymousreply 5February 9, 2021 5:08 PM

Just out of curiosity, do you calculate the tip from the final total including tax, or before tax? My dad told me the tip was before tax, but he was a tightwad, so.

by Anonymousreply 6February 9, 2021 5:09 PM

Before tax.

by Anonymousreply 7February 9, 2021 5:10 PM

I usually pay 20% on the pre tax total. Going by the 18.45 total, he should have left about 3.75 for tip. I'd round up to 4.

by Anonymousreply 8February 9, 2021 5:11 PM

Who drinks coffee with their quesadilla?

by Anonymousreply 9February 9, 2021 5:11 PM

Sometimes on a low bill one tips higher and 20%. Maybe its a local place and you know the staff. What's a dollar extra? DL has a lot of penny pinchers and few who way over tip, as well.

by Anonymousreply 10February 9, 2021 5:11 PM

No - the tip is based on the cost of the food, period (and drinks were there any.)

The server didn't ask if you wanted some tax, or what kind of tax, or bring you a plate of tax or clear the tax away when you were done.

by Anonymousreply 11February 9, 2021 5:12 PM

I'm a cheap cunt!

by Anonymousreply 12February 9, 2021 5:13 PM

Why is the tax on a restaurant meal 20%? Where the hell do you live?

by Anonymousreply 13February 9, 2021 5:13 PM

I am not going beyond 25%, so there.

by Anonymousreply 14February 9, 2021 5:13 PM

[quote]The server didn't ask if you wanted some tax, or what kind of tax, or bring you a plate of tax or clear the tax away when you were done.

Thank you for answering in the most unnecessarily bitchy way possible.

by Anonymousreply 15February 9, 2021 5:14 PM

Welcome to DL R15.

by Anonymousreply 16February 9, 2021 5:16 PM

Good catch, I don't think any city has sales tax above 10.25%. Maybe OP accidentally left a decent tip.

by Anonymousreply 17February 9, 2021 5:16 PM

Cheap cunts / Bad tippers will also always, ALWAYS be the ones starting threads like this:

"My Server was So Unattentive! I Can't Imagine Why! The Downward Fall of America Continues!"

by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2021 5:18 PM

Fuck you for responding to my complete and correct response in the most unnecessary way, asshole.

Are you a butthurt server looking for 20% of the tax?

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2021 5:18 PM

Who would pay $16 for a quesadilla? Was it a main lobster quesadilla?

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2021 5:19 PM

If it were table service, I would have left 4 for below average service, 5 for good service. For takeout, I would have left 15% and then rounded up to the nearest dollar.

by Anonymousreply 21February 9, 2021 5:20 PM

A quesadilla with coffee, OP?

by Anonymousreply 22February 9, 2021 5:20 PM

This tipping discussion is an Extremely Sensitive Topic.

by Anonymousreply 23February 9, 2021 5:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 24February 9, 2021 5:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 25February 9, 2021 5:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 26February 9, 2021 5:21 PM

Christ, R19, simmer down. What is with everyone being such a crybaby lately?

Datalounge is literally about pointless bitchery. I didn't know saying that someone being pointlessly bitchy would make them so upset they'd start cussing like a sailor with Turrets.

by Anonymousreply 29February 9, 2021 5:24 PM

R24 I didn’t know VAT!

Turrets 🏰 Syndrome

by Anonymousreply 35February 9, 2021 5:30 PM

Some of you are so fucking cheap.

I never tip less than 20%. And during the pandemic, I always tip MORE.

These service working are going through a tough time.

by Anonymousreply 36February 9, 2021 5:35 PM

It’s fine but $4 would have been nice.

by Anonymousreply 37February 9, 2021 5:35 PM

That total, plus tax where I live, would have been just under $20. I would have left a total of $25. I left $10 on $35 this weekend. Eating in, not takeout.

by Anonymousreply 38February 9, 2021 5:40 PM

The tipping inflation is rampant.

by Anonymousreply 39February 9, 2021 5:43 PM

R28,

I’m not a tipping loon. 20% has become customary. If you don’t like it, eat at home.

I’m not extremely generous or nice and I don’t work in the service industry. If you routinely leave less than 20%, you’re just an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 40February 9, 2021 5:44 PM

I give $5 for takeout because every place in town brings it out to your car. Delivery guys get 15%, anyone who does shopping for me gets 20% or more. I haven't been to a sit-down restaurant in nearly a year.

by Anonymousreply 41February 9, 2021 5:45 PM

he's a cheap cunt!

by Anonymousreply 42February 9, 2021 5:49 PM

R34, read it again. You're so stupid.

by Anonymousreply 43February 9, 2021 5:52 PM

R36 Have some empathy.

These old prisspots need those coins for their cartons of Virginia Slims, as well as money to wave at street hustlers and escorts. They couldn't possibly tip a server more than 10 percent!

by Anonymousreply 44February 9, 2021 5:52 PM

[quote] Who would pay $16 for a quesadilla? Was it a main lobster quesadilla?

R20, it's Maine lobster (from the waters off the state of Maine, U.S.).

by Anonymousreply 45February 9, 2021 5:53 PM

20% is not customary. Customary is between 10% and 20%.

by Anonymousreply 46February 9, 2021 5:54 PM

I would have left $5.. because jesus christ, it's only 5 dollars.

by Anonymousreply 47February 9, 2021 5:54 PM

I would have tipped $4 or more. Sometimes, if my bill isn't very high, I will tip more than usual.

by Anonymousreply 48February 9, 2021 5:54 PM

My cunt is Tight

by Anonymousreply 49February 9, 2021 5:55 PM

R20 meant main course not Maine course.

by Anonymousreply 50February 9, 2021 5:55 PM

OP, did you just watch your friend eat without ordering anything or did you guys share one kaysaydeeya and one cup of coffee?

by Anonymousreply 51February 9, 2021 5:55 PM

$4.00

by Anonymousreply 52February 9, 2021 5:56 PM

R46 Customary is 15 to 20 percent if you are dining in the restaurant.

If you are picking up an order, 10 percent is customary.

You.

Are.

Cheap.

by Anonymousreply 58February 9, 2021 6:11 PM

A friend on mine is a server and a very good one. She was telling me that all her regular customers are tipping more in the pandemic.

a bill for 50 bucks and one of them will tip 100 bucks etc. very generous.

by Anonymousreply 59February 9, 2021 6:13 PM

[quote] a bill for 50 bucks and one of them will tip 100 bucks etc. very generous.

R58 : finally the voice of reason.

by Anonymousreply 61February 9, 2021 6:29 PM

You cheap fucks who can’t tip up a little during a pandemic when restaurants and servers are barely getting by are pathetic. If you can’t afford a few extra bucks stay home, you should be saving your money.

by Anonymousreply 62February 9, 2021 6:44 PM

this "conversation" never varies on DL and the old crones never EVER EVER reconsider their practice and opinions. There is no point to this.

Remember 73% of DL are 100% squeamish about any human skin contact during sex and many have never dared more than clothed frottage, and that was decades ago, do the the HUGE RISK AND ANXIETY that there are STIs in the world not to mention FORESKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And their mothers tipped exactly 10% 70 years ago in the 1950s dinner by the church in flyoverstan, and if it was good enough for mother in 1951, why by golly, 10% it is.

by Anonymousreply 63February 9, 2021 7:13 PM

I laughed hard at R11’s unique way of making their point. I’m not tipping on the tax per se, but just using it as a way to inflate the basis on which I tip, and that is usually 20-25%. The other comments and excoriations are equally hilarious: Cheapistan, Main Lobster (I prefer Alternate Lobster myself), Virginia Slims, etc...

Having said that, however, I do understand finding it objectionable a bit to pay $25 for a friendly lunch. When this happens to me I have to remind myself that times have changed, we’re in a pandemic, and I’m damn lucky to be able to afford such a comfort.

Since the pandemic, I’ve managed to save more by not going out, even despite the increased spending on booze deliveries. I pass on a bit of those savings to the service workers I do run across. I travel a bit for work and on a typical day I spend at least $12 on tips: $3 for each driver to/from the airport, $3 for the hotel room housekeeping, and $2-3 depending on how many times I visit Starbucks that day. That’s BEFORE visiting any restaurants.

by Anonymousreply 64February 9, 2021 7:25 PM

[quote] I never tip less than 20%. And during the pandemic, I always tip MORE.

Which clearly provides you with opportunities for self-congratulation, so it must be worth it.

One more thing to remind me how old I am. In the 50s coffee (with free refills) was usually no more than a quarter in most restaurants. And in some it was ten cents.

by Anonymousreply 85February 10, 2021 12:40 AM

R85 why should coffee be more than a quarter with refills these days still? It is a massive drive for profits while screwing the coffee-growers, staff and patrons. $2.50 plus a tip? Nope.

by Anonymousreply 86February 10, 2021 12:44 AM

Last diner I went to, about 10 years ago, I didn't leave a tip. I left early. I paid for the food I had eaten but not for anything else I had ordered but not received as the server was out back smoking or something. The server was so-called beloved but she was having an off-day, as some beloved people have. Failure of service: NO TIP. The bitch found the time to come out and glare at me and my friend. I had no intention of ever going back, of course, which is a pity because I liked that diner and had been going there for 10 years. Said diner closed about five years ago. BTW for the new: if you don't tip, never go back.

by Anonymousreply 87February 10, 2021 12:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 93February 10, 2021 2:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 94February 10, 2021 2:08 AM

Tip means, "To insure promptness."

It is supposed to be paid up-front.

by Anonymousreply 95February 10, 2021 2:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 97February 10, 2021 2:24 AM

Since the beginning of the pandemic last year I’ve bumped my typical tipping routine to 30%. Since 95% of my restaurant meals have been to go, and a lot of assholes don’t tip on to go orders, I’ve tried to make up for the poorly mannered non-tipping contingent.

by Anonymousreply 100February 10, 2021 3:57 AM

We could do away with the tipping system and pay servers a living wage. Obviously, DL would lose about 25% of its posts.

I don't understand why we're okay with $2 and change wage for servers. That's fucking criminal.

Btw, a lot of the Chinese and vietnamese restaurants pay the servers minimal wage and owners keep the tips. I still tip normally because I can't be sure which ones are doing it and I don't want to stiff a server who actually gets the tips or at least a share of it. I know this because my mom worked for a number of smaller and cheaper joints for decades. The higher end places will sometimes split the pot amongst staff. My mom would occasionally get big tips, usually from the white folks and 100% of it would go to the owner. My mom is a cheap ass tipper, which appalls me, especially since she was a server herself. But her response is that the tip is extra profit for the owners.

by Anonymousreply 101February 10, 2021 4:29 AM

I cannot afford 25%. Bye servers. Bye OP. By DL cunts. Bye restaurants. Bye, bye.

by Anonymousreply 102February 10, 2021 8:02 AM

And hello Top Ramen, r102!

by Anonymousreply 103February 10, 2021 9:15 AM

No surprise that there are some cheap assholes on this board.

I tip 20% or $6.00, whichever is greater.

by Anonymousreply 104February 10, 2021 9:29 AM

R87, you gave up eating at a place you liked just to stiff a waitress who was having a bad day? Talk about miserable cunts.

by Anonymousreply 105February 10, 2021 9:33 AM

Good point r101. I always tip cash whenever I can, hoping it will make it into my server’s pocket. If you can’t tip at least 20%, leave cash. When you tip on a credit card the server often has to pay the 2 - 4% fee imposed by the credit card companies pay, and it is reported as income so they have to pay taxes on it. Keep in mind that they are earning less than $5 an hour in salary and will be exempt from $15/hour minimum wage.

by Anonymousreply 106February 10, 2021 2:31 PM

R106 the part where you said "your server's pocket" reminded me that writer Connie Schultz won a Pultizer, in part, for covering tips in a series of columns.

Assuming that all tips go directly to the server is a mistake. In many cases, management will skim tips or take them all together, especially in those kinds of places where you aren't cashing out with the server directly, but putting money into a jar.

[quote] If I have to tip 20% then I certainly can't afford to dine out. It will have to be special occasions only; rarely, even then. Eateries will go out of business.

Tipping 20 percent is already standard in most locations in the US, and I don't know of any "eateries" that have gone out of business because of it. Or are you suggesting that you are such a tremendous fat whore that losing your patronage alone could put a restaurant out of business?

by Anonymousreply 111February 10, 2021 8:06 PM

20% is not standard anywhere except with DLers who over tip. R110 that tip was excessive.

by Anonymousreply 112February 10, 2021 9:38 PM

You don't need to take my word for it, r112; you can google it. For example:

by Anonymousreply 114February 10, 2021 10:56 PM

Most gays determine the amount of the tip in proportion to how hawt the waiter is and how much he flirt with them.

A tale as old as time.

by Anonymousreply 115February 10, 2021 11:20 PM

Etiquette guide the Emily Post Institute may say between 15 and 20 percent is fine

by Anonymousreply 116February 10, 2021 11:35 PM

It's not rocket science. A 20% tip just means $2 for every $10 on your bill. If you're check is exactly $20 with taxes and what not included, bare minimum leave $4 for a tip. Servers purposefully get paid far below minimum wage with the "understanding" that they will at least bring them up to that after tips are factored in. Restaurants are *supposed* to adjust their wages to bring them up to at least minimum wage if they don't make that in a given shift, but they never do. Worse yet, they push for tip pooling which makes servers overall earnings at the end of a shift even less.

It's not the servers fault that a restaurant wants to charge $15 for a quesadilla that costs them like $1.50 to make, and $2.50 for a beverage that costs them pennies on the dollar. The server has to pay taxes on their sales.

by Anonymousreply 117February 10, 2021 11:42 PM

I usually just double the tax, and round up

by Anonymousreply 118February 10, 2021 11:54 PM

Doubling the tax is just giving someone a 14% tip. $20 x 1.07 is just a $1.40 tip, well below 20%.

by Anonymousreply 119February 11, 2021 12:38 AM

^ my bad, 1.14% would be $22.80 if you were doubling the tax.

by Anonymousreply 120February 11, 2021 12:41 AM

The tax in my area is almost 9%, so…

by Anonymousreply 121February 11, 2021 1:00 AM

r63 I think you've summed up a few of the people on these boards quite well. Never ceases to amaze me how some people retreat to bullshit values taught by their parents (who themselves were taught this bullshit nearly 100 years ago).

You'd think a person who was older and less social might be like "hey, here are all these other people who are out in the world, many of whom are younger and have different experiences. let me see what they have to say so I don't embarrass myself or my friends next time I go out eat"

by Anonymousreply 122February 11, 2021 3:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 123February 11, 2021 3:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 124February 11, 2021 3:47 AM

No, because I don't eat at McDonald's. Gross.

by Anonymousreply 128February 12, 2021 7:13 AM

[quote] since neither are

Oh dear R127

Universal Health Care and Government-based Pension.

I would also throw in:: free education and student loan forgiveness because i am not a fucking fascist.

by Anonymousreply 130February 12, 2021 9:18 AM

That's an appropriate tip since you don't include the tax when calculating the tip. If it was excellent service, you can give more, of course. If it's great service, I also write something on the restaurant's copy of the bill ("great service!" or something like that) so the server and manager are aware.

by Anonymousreply 131February 12, 2021 9:24 AM

I only wish the server to bring the food efficiently from the kitchen to the table. I don't want the theater, "I will be your server this evening, how are you, I am Rudy, may I suggest...." Tiresome. I don't want to chat with or fuck the staff or be their friend. What is this '"great service!" or something like that' R131; you sound sad and lonely?

Because you think the manager reads your dumb-ass comments? And what is "great service": was he hawt?

R124 Biden has a plan to increase hourly wages of servers to $15.00 an hour in a few years, eliminating tips.

by Anonymousreply 136February 12, 2021 10:17 AM

When I pay by credit card always write CASH for the tip. This way the server gets the money. Can't trust owners to give correct tip if it's on a credit card.

by Anonymousreply 137February 12, 2021 10:19 AM

Yes, r129, that should be “neither is.” You still need to tip in the ballpark of 20 percent when you dine out.

by Anonymousreply 138February 12, 2021 10:25 AM

R136 Doddery Biden is not going to last a few years, but perhaps Mamala will oblige.

[quote] When I pay by credit card always write CASH for the tip.

Seriously you queens think you are the Ladies Bountiful of Salvation in the way you view tips as some sort of fake Noblesse Oblige b/s: the servers just think you're stupid with your airs and graces and over-tipping, straight from Nebraska or worse.

I agree about the theater, r132, but I tend to blame it on the restaurant’s management. They’ve probably trained their servers that way and get pissy when the servers don’t comply. Also, just so you know, you sound far sadder and lonelier than r131.

[quote] You still need to tip in the ballpark of 20 percent when you dine out.

R138 No. I. Do. Not. Need. To. Over-tip. 20% is too much for intrusive, over-familiar wait-staff in whose life history/resume I am not at all interested.

by Anonymousreply 141February 12, 2021 10:33 AM

R140 wins for fats and also for poors.

by Anonymousreply 142February 12, 2021 10:36 AM

Can servers explain how they get their tips (nightly, weekly) when paid by credit card, and how do you know you're not being cheated?

by Anonymousreply 143February 12, 2021 11:08 AM

Any waiters / waitresses on here to answer R143?

by Anonymousreply 144February 12, 2021 11:11 AM

I’ve been overtipping since Covid. I feel like I’m lucky enough to make a big salary, so I like to pass that along. I would have tipped at minimum $20,. If I had more cash maybe $40. Dinner time servers usually get $100. I want the restaurant and the server to still be there when this is over, so I consider this an investment (self-serving).

So did J.D. Rockefeller but he never overpaid for anything. A fool and his money are soon parted.

[quote]Don't ask a lesbian. If there's one thing everyone in service knows, it's that lesbians don't tip.

No. Women don't tip. Well, women with husbands, bfs, who are straight etc because... tHaT's ThE mAn'S jOb, DeRp!

by Anonymousreply 147February 12, 2021 12:48 PM

I don’t eat out very often, and order delivery very infrequently. I’m a decent tipper in general because I’ve had service jobs and they can be very difficult. Anyone doing them has my sympathy.

But during the pandemic, I absolutely tip much higher, not because I am rich or “try hard” but because I am fortunate enough to have been working at home for the last year, not risking my life to deliver or serve things to the more fortunate. It’s not like most people doing these jobs are making much money to begin with, especially now. And it’s not like most are getting hazard pay.

When I can afford to be generous, I try to. And this includes with people who deliver things like groceries or medical marijuana.

by Anonymousreply 148February 12, 2021 1:54 PM

[quote] For takeout, I would have left 15% and then rounded up to the nearest dollar.

You tip for takeout? That’s generous of you but is definitely not customary nor should it be expected. As someone asked unthread, does that mean you tip at McDonald’s? At the gas station when ordering a coffee?

Where I live unless they are actually serving tables (where tips make up a portion of the income) restaurant workers get at least the legally mandated $14/hour wage.

by Anonymousreply 149February 12, 2021 2:15 PM

R146 - well I’m not Rockefeller, but I’m not stupid. These people/servers are hurting financially and at risk of losing everything. So, you hang to your money and don’t be a fool. I will continue to contribute to my local community by overtipping, donating and supporting where I can. Which, per my values, isn’t foolish.
