Which octogenarian (and Nonagenarian) will get a massive outpouring of love and tributes upon their death ?
I am including only those who are 80 or older because their death will not be a shock but still be grieved by millions. Who will be celebrated and get the most love, tributes and media coverage when they die ?
Please take my poll and comment who is missing. Those who are not in the poll but certainly deserve to, are - Sidney Poitier, Dustin Hoffman, Jimmy Carter, Neil Diamond, Pope John Paul, Bernie Sanders etc.
I will create a separate thread for 60 to 79 years old personalities.

Queen Elizabeth. She has been a part of our lives, and most of our parents and grandparents lives. I think many people in the UK will take it very hard.

Betty White’s tributes will be sickening.

Jane Fonda will get a lot of negativity from the crowd that never forgave her for what she said about Vietnam.

The queen. It's not just that she's a popular pop culture figure (and she always is),but she is the literal embodiment of the United Kingdom and has been for nearly seventy years. There will be nothing else in the news for at least a week after she dies--maybe two weeks. We will become incredibly sick of hearing about her by the time it's over.

We've got some sad news for you, OP. Hate to break it to you, but Pope John Paul died back in 1978. Then there was a Pope John Paul II, but he died back in 2005.

Then there's Norman Lloyd - 106 and still going strong. He could easily make it to the 110 mark

I think Queen Elizabeth's death will hit many of us in the UK very hard. The young girl who made those radio broadcasts during the war, and the teen who danced with the crowds on VE Day, gone forever. It struck me when millions of us were watching her broadcasts to the nation last year that my grandparents and great-grandparents also listened to this woman make broadcasts in times of peril. It was an eerie feeling, but also comforting in a way.

OP, I think your poll is flawed because you did not stipulate whether the mourning would be domestic or foreign. Obviously, when HM Queen Elizabeth II dies, the public outpouring of grief will be monumental. Primarily, in Great Britain of course, but also in varying degrees, throughout the world.
Betty White will undoubtedly receive a massive display of mourning, and deservedly so, but almost solely in the US.

R2 Who's ours? No one cares about stupid queen and her family except for Brits, hausfraus and bunch of DL-er, for some reason.

R20 The Queen is queen of 16 countries, total population 151 million, where I assume there will be official and public mourning come the day. However, the mourning is not supposed to endure; it is meant to be very much a case of, "The Queen is dead, long live the King."

[R20] You will be surprised. She has been in the public eye for since June 1953. [R21] post shows the extent of her rule.

When Jane Fonda dies they will come out of the woodwork to denounce her. She was an outright traitor and there are millions of veterans who despise her. It won't be pretty and she deserves it. She should have apologized for her actions due to her being a young spoiled brat...

Oh please, R32, are you channeling from 1974? They won't come out of the woodwork since most are six feet under or will be by the time Jane goes. And she's already apologized. Again and again. Let go of that old bone.

I voted the Queen because her passing will create a cottage industry of articles and photo essays documenting the years she was alive. She’s the most symbolic last vestige of an entire era. I actually dread these milestone deaths, because you have to hear about them for weeks nonstop. If you still have FB, everybody decides to announce the sad news in a never ending scroll to the end.

When The Queen dies it will be huge. Simply because not only is she queen of the UK but also so many other countries. This will lead those other countries into deciding whether to become republics and ditch Charles as their next king. Take countries like Jamaica and Australia for example. The Queen's death will lead to discussions all around the globe.

No link to support your comment R28. Why would they hate stability? However, they are free to fire her anytime they like: I understand that Barbados is becoming a republic this year.

R7 It's not only what she said it's what she DID. I'm a fan but she was very very stupid in her behavior. She was heavily influenced by her husband a limousine French commie and what she did was pure insanity. And she was a grown woman not an idiot teen. I still think she should get a Kennedy Center Honor. Considering we've had a multitude of top government officials who avoided the draft it's time to let it go. I mean for Veterans to support Trump after three times buying his way out of the draft when so many poor men were horribly maimed and killed? For a seditionist like him to be forgiven by so many conservatives? Come on.
But this was bizarre:
“If you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would some day become communist. . . . I, a socialist, think that we should strive toward a socialist society, all the way to communism.”
And then her trip to Hanoi where she accused American soldiers of being war criminals...
But Bush is ok? Trump releases convicted war criminals and he's ok?...

R34 I am 67. I live an area that is heavy active military and retired military. Jane was handed a note from a prisoner of war to take with her to the US and she gave the note to the Vietnamese military. They retaliated against the group. Admiral Jeremiah Denton who was a prisoner of war wrote a book about the experience. Hell was in Session is the title. It was big where I live.

To be honest, I don't think The Queen is bothered at all about Barbados becoming a republic. So many countries have done during her reign. Let's be frank. Anything that lessens the load at this time of life is a help.

For the UK, the Queen would be very closely followed by Sir David Attenborough. I don’t think there is a more loved person in the country. More so than the Queen I would believe although the mourning for him will be quieter.

Agreed, all of the ones listed both in the post and the poll will receive a lot of tributes, but tributes come and go within a couple of days for older stars who are already at least in their 80s.
I can't think of anyone except maybe the Pope or the Queen whose deaths would be a big topic for longer than that.

I'm surprised that Betty White is the top choice. Is she known at all outside North America ? I wonder if she even registers with young people who never watched The Golden Girls or the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Queen Elizabeth II seems the obvious choice.
