What's that horrible fruit/candy thing they have in America?
It's kind of flat like a pancake and sticky and rolled up. I don't know how else to describe it.
My cousin in L.A. used to send it to us in London (along with some nicer Americana things) - it was FOUL. I haven't seen it in years! They definitely don't sell it here in the American sections of the supermarket.

Fruit roll ups? Omg those things are nasty. I’m not sure if kids really like them or if parents force it on their children because they think it’s healthy.

Fruit leather. Dehydrated fruit puree/pulp. Many different companies and kinds in America.

They were called "fruit leather" when I was a kid, and sold as a healthy snack in spite of being about 75% sugar.
They were disgusting, and this from a former kid who'd do anything for a sugar buzz.

[quote]fruit rollup
I think it was something else.
WIKI:
'Fruit Roll-Ups is a brand of fruit snack that debuted in grocery stores across America in 1983"
because this was PRE-1983.
But very like that.

Fruit Roll-Ups are wonderful! My god, my mouth just watering now from the memory of them. I haven’t had one or even thought about them in so long.
Debuted circa 1983. And they still make them! I might order some online. I don’t know why you weirdos think they’re so awful.

Fruit Rollups and fruit leather look similar but are pretty different. The former is just a film of flavored sugar. Fruit leather is supposed to be dried fruit puree, which is in theory healthier because it will have the fruit's nutrients and fiber, but it's still high in sugars.

Yes, that's it!
I thought you were joking with that name at first.

I'm sure there have been various products sold as fruit leather that were not 100% fruit though.

Fruit Roll Ups. They were big during the 80's when mothers on an "organic" diet kick tried to trick their kids into thinking it was candy.

Okay FINE, I’ll mail-order the fruit leather instead.
OP, click the Wiki link at R8 — in the history, there’s a link to Joray fruit rolls, Roll-Ups’ predecessor. Maybe that’s it?

How about some Jelly Belly candy instead?
It’s good.

Fruit roll-ups are disgusting and though they did not debut until 1983, what you're describing, OP, is the same thing minus the brand name. In college in the mid-80s, a friend and I bought some edible underwear at the local porn shop, just to see what he hell it was. Turned out to be fruit rollups in the form of underwear and tasted just as disgusting.

Why do people think they were disgusting? What am I missing? SOMEONE out there had to have liked them, because they were very popular when I was a kid in the 80s.

Never had one, and never wanted to. I'm not even curious about them.

As my father used to say "You don't need to go to Alaska to know what Alaska's like".

You can make it yourself.

New school = Fruit snacks / Fruit flavored cocaine

Wouldn’t it be easier and probably healthier to just buy dried fruit, rather than these Frankenstein concoctions from a chemical laboratory?

Part of the '80s "healthy snacks" fad, along with sugar-filled granola bars and sugar water with "10% real juice!" that helped fuel America's obesity epidemic.

Fruit leather is from Syria but was sold in Jewish delis in NYC since the early1900s.

You couldn't roll them up like paper.

Fruit leather was fun because you get to rip it off the plastic backing. Also you could make it in different flavors like apple-raspberry or peach-strawberry.
It’s still too much sugar for me, but yeah it’s healthier than Fruit Rollups. (Which we loved as a kid. In the beginning, they were closer to fruit leather. Now they’re foul.)

Fruit Roll ups don't have any secret dangerous chemical in them; they're just corn syrup and food dye. Fruit leather is the same thing, the type of sugar gives it a different texture.

I loved them when I was a kid. We used to unwrap them, roll them around our fingers and suck on them.

I make dried apricots and raisins for a friend who's allergic to raisins made with sulfur dioxide. This is no different except you liquify the fruit in a blender with water, lemon juice and possibly a little sugar You insert a special silicone liner in your hydrator tray, pour a thin layer and let it dry. It's a thin sheet of dried apricots.

Keep your leather and roll-ups and give me these “fruit” slices. Talk about a sugar high!
